Inadvertent featured picture removal?

Pencil portrait, restored

About six weeks ago you were merging material on the John Quincy Adams biography and removed a section, noting in the comment that the removal was mostly redundant material.[1] One of the things that vanished with that edit was the only featured picture at the biography: a digitally restored version of the final portrait taken during Adams' lifetime. Unfortunately Wikipedia's software tends to obscure featured picture status (you would have to click twice on the image, then scroll downward before the FP marker is visible).

This was sketched inside the Congressional rotunda after he collapsed with a stroke during a vote. The image is high resolution and it was pretty much never published until Wikipedia's restoration because the original is badly faded, yellowed, and stained. Kind of special to present something like this.

Would you have any objection to reinstating it? Durova412 18:51, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

I would have no objections at all! Thank you for explaining the situation, I did not mean to remove a featured picture. I restored the picture to the article, but feel free to place it in another location in the article. Orser67 (talk) 19:10, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
Thank you very much. Best regards. Durova412 21:38, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

Help with Congressional Institute article

Hello, Orser67! I found your name looking around at various political-related articles, and it seems like you have an interest in American politics, so I hope it's ok for me to reach out to ask if you'd be interested to help with a COI edit request in this topic area? The article for the Congressional Institute very much needs some work; the existing content of the article is overly detailed, promotional for the organization, has inline external links, and content that is not properly sourced. On behalf of the organization, I'm seeking to update the page with a new draft that trims the whole article down and provides thorough sourcing. There's an edit request on the Talk page here that provides more details. Unfortunately, so far I've been unable to find someone to review the draft. As I have a COI (I'm working for the Institute as part of my work with Beutler Ink) I won't edit the article directly and instead would love for an uninvolved editor to review the draft and make the changes if they're appropriate. Do you think you'd be able to take a look? Thanks in advance! 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 19:44, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

Hey, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Unfortunately I'm busy with my current wiki-commitments and real-life commitments, but good luck with improving the article. Orser67 (talk) 01:41, 26 June 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply Orser67, I appreciate it. Another editor has been able to review, so this request is now resolved. Thanks, 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 02:33, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

Editor of the Week

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week in recognition of your polite political editing. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Buster7 submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

Orser67 became a full-time contributor late in 2013. Since then he has worked on, among other things, various United States election and campaign articles and articles about U.S. presidents such as the presidencies of Wilson, Coolidge, McKinley, Adams as well as Obama and Trump. Editing political articles can be treacherous and prone to pitfalls and conflict. But Orser67 is congenial and diplomatic in conversation. He takes time to compliment which helps create dialogue rather than drama. His demeanor deserves acknowledgement.

You can copy the following text to your user page to display a user box proclaiming your selection as Editor of the Week:

Thanks again for your efforts! Lepricavark (talk) 20:26, 25 June 2017 (UTC)

re map

That map is old! You should look at the redone maps at Territorial evolution of the United States, which go back now to 1776, as well as the "snapshot" (as opposed to "change") views at [2]. Glad you like them! If you need any modifications or if you need me to point out a specific file, let me know. :) --Golbez (talk) 17:49, 27 July 2017 (UTC)

Much appreciated. I think I will use this one. Orser67 (talk) 18:16, 27 July 2017 (UTC)
You may want this one, which is the "snapshot" of that time period: File:United_States_Central_map_1784-05-12_to_1787-07-13.png If you like, I can make one with all the text removed. --Golbez (talk) 18:44, 27 July 2017 (UTC)
Whoops, that's actually the one I meant to link. I think this map will work great as is. Thanks again and I hope you continue to make great maps. Orser67 (talk) 19:00, 27 July 2017 (UTC)

The article Josh Maxwell has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:POLITICIAN, mayors are generally not notable and neither are unsuccessful candidates for state house of reps.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Presidency of George Washington

As Wehwalt has recommended a section on Martha Washington, I've quickly cobbled a section together at User:Eddie891/sandbox/GW#First Lady. Before (if at all) I add it, I thought I might check in with you. Do you think it should be added? Suggestions? Anything to add? Where should it go? General thoughts? Eddie891 Talk Work 02:14, 16 February 2018 (UTC)

In working on other presidency articles I haven't been sure how much to include about the president's personal life and family, but in general I haven't devoted too much time to them with the thought that the bio article usually covers them. However, given that Martha Washington was the first First Lady, I think it makes sense to include a paragraph or two about her. I think what you have now is pretty much what I'd cover. I would add in a note that the term "First Lady" wasn't used until later. As for placement, how about right below the Vice president section? Orser67 (talk) 02:33, 16 February 2018 (UTC)

I did. I stated on the FAC page that "I think mention of the Treaty of New York and Holston should be added as well. Aside from that, I have no major objections." LittleJerry (talk) 22:43, 24 February 2018 (UTC)
My mistake, I didn't notice the last comment you made. I added a sentence mentioning the treaties. Orser67 (talk) 07:58, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

No idea. I guess I have two potentially helpful thoughts. You can view a list of Supreme Court cases here. All of the anti-trust cases should be titled "United States vs. x" or "x vs. United States." You could also try the Wikipedia:Reference desk/Humanities. I'd be interested to view the list if you ever get it done. Orser67 (talk) 02:07, 9 March 2018 (UTC)

Invitation to the Portals WikiProject...

You are invited to join the effort to revitalize and improve the Portal system.

The Portals WikiProject was rebooted on April 17th, and is going strong. Sixty-six editors have joined so far, with more joining daily. We're having a blast, and excitement is high...

Our goal is to update, upgrade, and maintain portals.

In addition to working directly on portals, we are developing tools to make portals more dynamic (self-updating), and to make building and maintaining portals easier. We've finished two tools so far, with more to come. They are Template:Transclude lead excerpt and Template:Transclude random excerpt.

Discussions are underway about how to further upgrade portals, and what the portals of the future will be.

There are plenty of tasks (including WikiGnome tasks too).

With more to come.

We may even surprise ourselves and exceed all expectations. Who knows what we will be able to accomplish in what may become the biggest Wikicollaboration in years.

See ya at the WikiProject!

Sincerely,    — The Transhumanist   06:55, 4 May 2018 (UTC)

I would love to bring all of the main president bios articles up to GA (especially since readers view them a lot more than the presidency articles), but unfortunately I need to cut back on my Wikipedia time after this month due to real-life commitments. Orser67 (talk) 16:56, 16 May 2018 (UTC)
I understand how it is; real life comes calling very often. Kierzek (talk) 17:44, 16 May 2018 (UTC)

Thank you very much

The RfC discussion to eliminate portals was closed May 12, with the statement "There exists a strong consensus against deleting or even deprecating portals at this time." This was made possible because you and others came to the rescue. Thank you for speaking up.

By the way, the current issue of the Signpost features an article with interviews about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

I'd also like to let you know that the Portals WikiProject is working hard to make sure your support of portals was not in vain. Toward that end, we have been working diligently to innovate portals, while building, updating, upgrading, and maintaining them. The project has grown to 80 members so far, and has become a beehive of activity.

Our two main goals at this time are to automate portals (in terms of refreshing, rotating, and selecting content), and to develop a one-page model in order to make obsolete and eliminate most of the 150,000 subpages from the portal namespace by migrating their functions to the portal base pages, using technologies such as selective transclusion. Please feel free to join in on any of the many threads of development at the WikiProject's talk page, or just stop by to see how we are doing. If you have any questions about portals or portal development, that is the best place to ask them.

If you would like to keep abreast of developments on portals, keep in mind that the project's members receive updates on their talk pages. The updates are also posted here, for your convenience.

Again, we can't thank you enough for your support of portals, and we hope to make you proud of your decision. Sincerely,    — The Transhumanist   23:32, 26 May 2018 (UTC)

P.S.: if you reply to this message, please {{ping}} me. Thank you. -TT

Possible Wikipedia-integrated publication

Dear Orser67 and Drdpw,

I came across the Wikipedia article that you helped to write on the Presidency of George Washington.

Would you be interested in putting it (or any other article) though external, academic peer review for publication in the WikiJournal of Humanities? It's an academic journal in the same format as the medical journal www.WikiJMed.org.

It couples the rigour of academic peer review with the extreme reach of the encyclopedia. It is therefore an excellent way to achieve public engagement, outreach and impact public understanding of science. Peer-reviewed articles are dual-published both as standard academic PDFs, as well as directly into Wikipedia. This improves the scientific accuracy of the encyclopedia, and rewards academics with citable, indexed publications. It also provides much greater reach than is normally achieved through traditional scholarly publishing.

Anyway, let me know whether you'd be interested in putting an article through academic peer review (either solo, or with a team of coauthors). Alternatively, if you would prefer to write on a different topic, we may be able to accommodate you.

Further information at v:WikiJournal_of_Humanities/Publishing. T.Shafee(Evo&Evo)talk 12:02, 10 June 2018 (UTC)

Thank you for the invitation, but I'm currently trying to limit my time spent on Wikipedia due to real-life obligations, and I just don't think I can make a major time commitment at this point in my life. I will definitely be keeping an eye on the journal, though. Orser67 (talk) 05:22, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

With this edit you made many changes to the article, including this incomplete sentence in the "Administration" section, covering Lincoln's cabinet: "Seward became the [47]". I don't have access to that ref (Paludan), so I'm not sure what you intending to add there. Please take a look and fix it when you have a moment. I don't think it's urgent however. It's been like that for five months and no one else seems to have noticed it. FYI - theWOLFchild 00:54, 11 July 2018 (UTC)

Progress bars for WP:US Presidents?

Hi, Orser67! I've noticed the task list you added to WP US Presidents, and was wondering if you wanted me to add progress bars as well, or if you think that would look too cluttered? Also, I'm wondering if it's worth marking incumbent President/Vice-President in a different colour, as I'm not sure how practical it would be to try to get FA (or even GA) for a sitting President/Vice President. — Sasuke Sarutobi (push to talk) 17:33, 14 September 2018 (UTC)

Hi Sasuke Sarutobi, those both sound like excellent ideas to me. I went ahead and implemented your idea for a different color for incumbents, because I agree that it would be quite difficult to get either incumbent to GA. Orser67 (talk) 18:10, 14 September 2018 (UTC)
Awesome. I've added the {{progression}} bars - I'm not sure about them centring, though, as it looks a bit messy to me. I might take a look at either being able to set the progression template to float left like the tables, or possibly even use a form of {{progression rainbow}} to reflect the GA-status articles on the same bar. — Sasuke Sarutobi (push to talk) 18:22, 14 September 2018 (UTC)
Looks great! Orser67 (talk) 18:36, 14 September 2018 (UTC)
