Thanks

This issue has already been discussed and it looks like I've just pissed off the wrong person. Appreciate the heads up though. Tommy2010 21:18, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Help for new editors

Hi, Orphan Wiki, I've just seen the advice which apparently you added to the Welcome message - I found it hard to find, as that needs a recent new editor. I'm concerned that WP raises the height of obstacles facing new editors, and this could strangle WP eventually. I fully the core policies, so I'm trying to work out to get the best of both worlds. My approach, at User:Philcha/Essays/Advice for new Wikipedia editors, is:

  • Look through the eyes of a new editor as he/she makes the first steps in editing articles.
  • Use an informal style to keep the newbie relaxed. I'm about to implement this at User:Philcha/Essays/Advice for new Wikipedia editors about some discussion, and I'm glad to see that you've already gone for an informal style - "You ..." rather than "The editor ...", etc.
  • A "lite" presentation of policies, hope that 20% of the details will cover over 90% cases, and tell nebwies to be cautious about these for 6 to 12 months.
  • Techniques and tools - hopefully well chosen, and introduced at the best time. For example there are tools that make building citations easy, and also present checklist of the items required for each types of source (Web, books, etc.).

If User:Philcha/Essays/Advice for new Wikipedia editors becomes good, I'd publish it in mainspace as a essay. Then if it becomes really good I'd hope it be part of the Welcome pack.

I'd be grateful for your comments, at User talk:Philcha/Essays/Advice for new Wikipedia editors - both generally and about where newbies can get advice about the policies - I'm reluctant to recommend WP:Talk:policy pages as these will be frequented by "cops" & "building inspectors". --Philcha (talk) 06:38, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

I'll check out your essay when I've got a little time to study it. Don't worry, I won't take long. :) Orphan Wiki 15:06, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
Just letting you know I still haven't forgotten! But I want time to read it properly and think about it, time which I don't have much of at the moment, but no worries, I will get round to it as soon as I can. :) Orphan Wiki 21:56, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
I've had a look and left some suggestions :). Orphan Wiki 09:57, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

Don't know if you are using it but if not, I suggest you have a look at it. Kittybrewster 18:18, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Tried to use it before, but as I am using IE, I can't. I use Huggle instead. Orphan Wiki 18:19, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Please delete the page Lynn Schenk

Why are you ignoring a request to have a page deleted? Is there a more effective way to make this happen? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.218.195.163 (talk) 21:33, 15 May 2010 (UTC) 98.218.195.163 (talk) 22:50, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Firstly, I don't have the authority to delete pages here. Secondly, it does not meet the criteria for speedy deletion. Various editors have contributed to the article over a number of years, and there's no reason to flag it for deletion. However, if you continue to feel strongly that some things in the article should not be there, begin a discussion on the article's talk page. Orphan Wiki 14:49, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

If you do not have the authority to delete a page, then please provide the authority (and link) where one may do so. Regardless of how many people have contributed, I would imagine that the person that is a subject of a biography should have the last say on whether or not he/she wants to have this information made available. If what Wikipedia is trying to do is create an exhaustive list/reference of politicians, then they should have a page just with the proven facts and avoid any other information that's subject to interpretation or that can be substantiated. It's very irresponsible of Wikipedia to allow people to write opinions on what's purpoted to be a encyclopedic work. Even after such opinions are deleted these continue to show up on the page's histort- there for all to see.

Once again, if you don't have the authority, do provide the way to contact whoever has that authority. 98.218.195.163 (talk) 15:19, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

I'm not sure what your problem is with this article. If you think the content is somehow wrong or misleading, take the matter to the article's talk page, like I suggested before. Even better, post a new thread over at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject California, where people "in the know" about the article's subject can help you, and quickly. This is out of my hands. Reviewer permission

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:43, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Have been extremely busy at the moment, and still haven't had time to use it, but in a matter of a week, I'll have much more time on my hands for a short while. (I think...) Orphan Wiki 08:12, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
