Mallet family[edit]

Dear Nvoth, I'm intrigued by your post on the Mallet Family. My English family claims direct descent from Jacques Mallet du Pan, and I have a copy of his portrait on my wall here in New England. I just wondered why you were intrigued by this family in particular! Best wishes, Eratosignis (talk) 18:52, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Eratosignis! One of my hobbies is making genealogical charts. My favorite projects are teacher-student relationships (a kind of 'knowledge genealogy', if you will). I was tracing a scientist's "ancestors", when I became stuck at Marc Auguste Pictet. Who taught Marc Auguste? After a bit of research, I found that Pictet's principal instructor was Jacques André Mallet. After creating the astronomer's article, I realized that one had already been created on the French language wiki. There, I found a link to the Mallet family article, too, and was inspired thusly. You have such an interesting and unique family, similar to the Rothschilds in a lot of ways, and I was astonished to find that its history had not yet been captured in an article. Have you contributed to your ancestor's page at all? Cheers! Conte d'Almamuerta 04:35, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
When I was in my 40s, having ignored my family history for a long while, I suddenly got interested, and so read a bit and constructed a genealogy using a genealogy program, which I've tried to keep up ever since. But as a geneticist, I don't think genealogy is terribly important for determining actual genetic characteristics. However, the history I do find fascinating.
I wouldn't want to edit my own family's pages since that way lies bias! I've dabbled in a few things on history and evolution, though. My name eratosignis comes from the name of a butterfly in the Amazon which we discovered was a separate species, and not just a geographic form as formerly thought. Best wishes, Jim Eratosignis (talk) 13:41, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
