Calling all WikiProject X members!

Hello fellow member! WikiProject X needs your help!

We studied the various needs that WikiProjects have, and have come up with some ideas for our first round of WikiProject tool development. These include:

  • An automatically updated WikiProject directory that surfaces WikiProject-related metrics and automatically generates a list of active participants and potential members;
  • A lightweight, optional alternative to WikiProject banners, featuring an option to quickly send a message to the named WikiProjects;
  • A tool that bootstraps WikiProjects; and
  • A worklist generation script for WikiProjects

We are now looking for volunteer coders to work on these projects. If you are interested in developing these tools, or if you would to volunteer for other tasks, check out our new volunteers portal. Thank you for your help!

Check of non-admin closure of AFD

Hi, I have just tried my hand at closing the AFD at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mohi (2nd nomination). I think it met the criteria for a non-admin closure. Would you be kind enough to have a quick look and see if I have done the right thing? Thank you very much, AtHomeIn神戸 (talk) 06:32, 14 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi Athomeinkobe: The close is proper per WP:SK#1 because the nominator withdrew and nobody else in the discussion advocated for deletion. The close is also in order as per procedures delineated at Wikipedia:Deletion process – Non-administrators closing discussions. I added a </small> markup to the close to fix a formatting error and added bold to the word "keep" in the Old afd multi template at Talk:Mohi. North America1000 06:38, 14 April 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for your prompt attention. I thought something looked odd when I was looking at the page. The missing </small> was obviously the problem. Thank you once again. AtHomeIn神戸 (talk) 07:01, 14 April 2015 (UTC)

Nomination of Regal Show World for deletion

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 3

Greetings! For this month's issue...

We have demos!

After a lengthy research and design process, we decided for WikiProject X to focus on two things:

  • A WikiProject workflow that focuses on action items: discussions you can participate in and tasks you can perform to improve the encyclopedia; and
  • An automatically updating WikiProject directory that gives you lists of users participating in the WikiProject and editing in that subject area.

We have a live demonstration of the new WikiProject workflow at WikiProject Women in Technology, a brand new WikiProject that was set up as an adjunct to a related edit-a-thon in Washington, DC. The goal is to surface action items for editors, and we intend on doing that through automatically updated working lists. We are looking into using SuggestBot to generate lists of outstanding tasks, and we are looking into additional options for automatic worklist generation. This takes the burden off of WikiProject editors to generate these worklists, though there is also a "requests" section for Wikipedians to make individual requests. (As of writing, these automated lists are not yet live, so you will see a blank space under "edit articles" on the demo WikiProject. Sorry about that!) I invite you to check out the WikiProject and leave feedback on WikiProject X's talk page.

Once the demo is sufficiently developed, we will be working on a limited deployment on our pilot WikiProjects. We have selected five for the first round of testing based on the highest potential for impact and will scale up from there.

While a re-designed WikiProject experience is much needed, that alone isn't enough. A WikiProject isn't any good if people have no way of discovering it. This is why we are also developing an automatically updated WikiProject directory. This directory will surface project-related metrics, including a count of active WikiProject participants and of active editors in that project's subject area. The purpose of these metrics is to highlight how active the WikiProject is at the given point of time, but also to highlight that project's potential for success. The directory is not yet live but there is a demonstration featuring a sampling of WikiProjects.

Each directory entry will link to a WikiProject description page which automatically list the active WikiProject participants and subject-area article editors. This allows Wikipedians to find each other based on the areas they are interested in, and this information can be used to revive a WikiProject, start a new one, or even for some other purpose. These description pages are not online yet, but they will use this template, if you want to get a feel of what they will look like.

We need volunteers!

WikiProject X is a huge undertaking, and we need volunteers to support our efforts, including testers and coders. Check out our volunteer portal and see what you can do to help us!

As an aside...

Wouldn't it be cool if lists of requested articles could not only be integrated directly with WikiProjects, but also shared between WikiProjects? Well, we got the crazy idea of having experimental software feature Flow deployed (on a totally experimental basis) on the new Article Request Workshop, which seeks to be a place where editors can "workshop" article ideas before they get created. It uses Flow because Flow allows, essentially, section-level categorization, and in the future will allow "sections" (known as "topics" within Flow) to be included across different pages. What this means is that you have a recommendation for a new article tagged by multiple WikiProjects, allowing for the recommendation to appear on lists for each WikiProject. This will facilitate inter-WikiProject collaboration and will help to reduce duplicated work. The Article Request Workshop is not entirely ready yet due to some bugs with Flow, but we hope to integrate it into our pilot WikiProjects at some point.

Question about WP:SNOW for an AfD

Hi, could you please have a look at this AfD? WikiProject X tab navigation

Hi, I think the new tab-based navigation is kind of excessive for the scale of the project. Something closer to the orignal design (links on the main page) should be sufficient and less intrusive. Would you mind if I revert the addition and try to figure out a more lightweight alternative? wctaiwan (talk) 01:53, 17 April 2015 (UTC)

  • Hi Wctaiwan: I like the tabs, and find them unobtrusive as they exist atop the project's pages. A problem with the project's pages is that many of them were orphaned, in which there were no links to them. If there are no links, then people won't know about various pages' existence, won't see them, and won't be able to understand the project's workings. North America1000 01:57, 17 April 2015 (UTC)
They weren't actually orphaned. Harej consolidated things under the Volunteers subpage a few days ago; prior to that they were linked from the main page (which is probably better; I'd probably change it back to something similar). That the tabs are on top of every project page is why I find them obtrusive (along with their size, the fact that they take up the full width, and the contrast). Sure, they're common on Wikipedia, but it's really not good design. Pages on one website really shouldn't be introducing their own persistent navigation elements (or, when you come down to it, their own page layouts, but it's probably an OK price to pay for making the main page of a WikiProject look interesting to visitors). Outside of the talk page link (which is duplicating the Vector/Monobook tabs, anyway), the links really aren't so crucial that they need to be visible on every page of the WikiProject. I'd strongly favour taking them out. wctaiwan (talk) 02:08, 17 April 2015 (UTC)
I have removed the black coloration in {{WikiProject X tabbed header}} to lessen its presence and have initiated a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject X § Tabbed header in hopes to obtain member input regarding the matter. In this manner, hopefully a consensus can be reached regarding its use. North America1000 02:20, 17 April 2015 (UTC)
N.b. Tabbed header replaced with {{WikiProject X sidebar}}. North America1000 19:02, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

Bangladesh

Hi. A few years back I sorted out most of the categories for settlements on wikipedia. To avoid confusion between town and city and village and town we decided on putting all in one category. For Bangladesh this should be avoided and instead replaced with whatever applies in Category:Populated places in Bangladesh by division.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:58, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

Dr. Blofeld: Thanks for the information and notification. North America1000 04:45, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
Dr. Blofeld: Update: Of note is that populated places that are verified as villages could be categorized as such. For example, see List of villages in Bangladesh, whereby some of the listed villages are verified by reliable sources as such (villages). North America1000 17:19, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

Would you be willing to swing by M._William_Phelps, the already shrill arguments of Nom now fly so so bizarrely in the face of policy that it may be time to close the discussion, or perhaps to draw in another experienced editor? [23] I'm not sure how to proceed with an editor who flatly misstates policy, when no other editors have come to the page and it has been up for weeks already.E.M.Gregory (talk) 12:27, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

Bettifm

Hey.

I just noted your theory that User:Bettifm was secretly blocked for sock puppetry.

That doesn't seem to be the case, based on the block log here: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log/block&page=User%3ABettifm

They were blocked for removing the AFD notice, but the block was extended to indefinite based on the accusation of sock puppetry.

Since the original block was incorrect, it would stand to reason that the extension of the block was similarly incorrect. I was wondering if you could perhaps amend your claim that they were secretly blocked for sock puppetry from the AFD closure notice. Thanks.

Fingers crossed the admin that extended it from 1 week to indefinite sees their mistake and undoes the error. I'd hate to see a good editor like Bettifm banned based on something as silly as being bold by removing an AFD that should never have been there in the first place. I think we should assume good faith a bit more. Mister Sneeze A Lot (talk) 13:54, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

Furthermore, per their own admission, User:Tamaora is a "sister editor" of Bettifm, and was not hiding that they were a meatpuppet of each other, per their own user page: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Tamaora&oldid=655168116 . I am certain that this does not violate WP:SOCK and the indefinite ban of both was made in error. The 1 week block was maybe fair enough though. Mister Sneeze A Lot (talk) 13:58, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

Hello Mister Sneeze A Lot: The indefinite block was performed by Bbb23, who is both an admin and a checkuser, and this did not occur secretly (link). As such, I suggest you ask inquire with them about the block. Gadfium performed the block before this, which was for one week, for removing an AfD template from an article (link, scroll down to second entry with the section header "Blocked"), so I suggest you contact this user about this block. The user removed the AfD template prematurely from the article at 09:18, 18 April 2015 (UTC) (diff) while the discussion was still occurring. The nominator did not withdraw until 14:01, 18 April 2015 (UTC) (diff). You state the block is incorrect, but this does not appear to be the case. I won't be changing the close at the AfD discussion to state they were "secretly" blocked, because this would be incorrect to state. North America1000 18:08, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
Firstly, the block was for removing the AFD, as you agree to here, as I stated in the AFD, and as you "corrected" (incorrectly) in the closing of that AFD. Since you admit to being wrong above, I'd like you to just delete that line in the AFD, as it will be looked at in the future and some people might get the wrong idea. They were blocked indefinitely on the basis of an alleged sock puppet Tamaora, who, as stated above, is an admitted "sister editor" and hence is not in violation on Wikipedia's sock puppetry policy. I discussed this with the blocking editors and was told that I was secretly a sock puppet too. Thankfully, CheckUser confirmed that we are in different countries to each other, and are very unrelated. I am not asking you to investigate, just to correct your error in the AFD closing, for future reference. Thanks. Mister Sneeze A Lot (talk) 00:37, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
No, I have not admitted to being "wrong", because the chronology of events supports my response above in entirety. I have modified the close at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/When We Go To War to read "The result was speedy keep. Of note is that User:Bettifm was blocked (by another admin) for removing the AfD template from the article, and was later indefinitely blocked for sock puppetry (by another admin)." (link). The entire reason for this is because of your unblock request in the discussion. The block for the AfD template removal was for one week, the block for socking is indefinite. North America1000 00:45, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
I have nothing more to say about the indefinite block of the two accounts, although I found Mr. Sneeze A Lot's explanation as to why he was protesting the block to be interesting. Just a slight correction/addition about Bettifm's block history. He was blocked for one week by Gadfium for persistent addition of unsourced information. He was later blocked for one week by Gadfium for removing AfD tags. Then came my block.--Bbb23 (talk) 01:19, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
Yes, of course I noticed the first block, but there was no need to mention it in the AfD discussion, so I didn't. Thanks for your input Bbb23. North America1000 01:24, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
Big sighs. Proof doesn't mean as much over here as it does in the real world. Mister Sneeze A Lot (talk) 01:55, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
