November 2021[edit]

Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing because of the following problems: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business, organisation, group, or web site, which is against the username policy.

You may request a change of name and unblock if you intend to make useful contributions other than promoting your business or organization. To do this, first search Special:CentralAuth for available usernames that comply with the username policy. Once you have found an acceptable username, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with your new username and replace the text "Your reason here" with your reasons to be unblocked. In your reasons, you must:

  • Disclose any compensation you may receive for your contributions in accordance with the Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure requirement.
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
Appeals: If, after reviewing the guide to appealing blocks, you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal it by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your reason here" with the reasons you believe the block was an error, and publish the page. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 10:09, 10 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! I saw your post on my talk-page. Please don't edit while logged out – this page is open to you, you can comment or ask questions here. To be unblocked you'll need to choose a new username that represents you as an individual (no requirement for it to be a real name); and then make a request addressing the three bullet-points in the dirty yellow template above. Each of the three has roughly the same weight, but – for the sake of clarity – if your only interest here is to edit the National Research Foundation (South Africa) page then any request you make is likely to be declined. We don't allow promotion of any kind, and that includes corporate/institutional promotion. Sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear. Request reason:

1 - I am a paid employee of the National Research Foundation (NRF), working in the organisation's Corporate Communications department. Part of my job is to ensure that the NRF is represented in various media (online and otherwise) accurately. While I am not directly paid to specifically edit the NRF's wikipedia page it is part of my job to ensure that it is accurate. I am not affiliated with any other organisation other than those associated with the NRF, ie its National Research Facilities, some of which have wikipedia pages themselves. Compensation in this respect is my salary which is for my overall work at the NRF and not limited solely to wikipedia editing which forms only a very small part of my duties as an NRF employee. 2 - I understand the reason for the block and believe it was more through a lack of understanding on my part of wikipedia's rules than anything else. 3 - As I stated before, my intention with editing the page is to update information that is clearly out of date, examples of which include the mention of the Hermanus Magnetic Observatory and the National Zoological Gardens, both of which are no longer associated with the NRF. In addition the previous editor placed a heavy focus on the NRF's Centres of Excellence (CoE) programme. While this is an important programme it is only only one of many managed by the NRF and giving it emphasis misrepresents the function and operations of the NRF. As a number of the NRF's research facilities, for example iThemba LABS and the South African Astronomical Observatory among others also maintain wikipedia pages, I intend to assist them in ensuring that the information posted on those pages is also kept up to date. I have compiled new wikipedia page text which I wish to upload to replace the existing text. I have endeavored to make it as unpromotional as possible, encyclopedic in content and style and short and to the point. It will include links to the wikipedia pages of those entities associated with the NRF as well as a few web links to entities indirectly associated with the NRF where possible. Any images used are produced by and for the NRF and I am happy to assign a Creative Commons license to them as well as any text uploaded. We usually use CC BY-NC-ND 2.0 for any work we produce as we are an agency of the South African Government funded by the taxpayer but I am happy to accept whatever license wikipedia specifies My lack of understanding of wikipedia editing protocols were, as I understand, the reason for the block. As stated above I have changed my user name and wish to keep this account in order to continue to update the NRF page as well as those pages associated with the NRF

Hi, Postscript. I'm willing to discuss this. We don't want you to directly edit the article about the NRF or other articles associated with it, or to make direct edits about the NRF/its employees/etc on other articles. What we'd like you to do is make edit requests at the article talk pages, which you can read about at Wikipedia:Edit requests.
You'll also need to disclose your conflict of interest on your User Page, which is at User:Postscript159 (if you click on that redlink, you can create that page, or if you'd like me to create it for you, I'm happy to do that). There are directions for posting the disclosure statement at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest.
Does that sound okay to you? —valereee (talk) 11:53, 2 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Valereee. Your suggestion is fine with me. However, as I am currently under a permanent block, I can't create a User Page for myself so I request that you please create one for me (or at the very least amend the block so that I can). I will undertake the rest of your suggestions. Thanks for your response.

@Justlettersandnumbers, do you have any objection to my unblocking this user, who has agreed not to edit directly around their areas of conflict of interest? valereee (talk) 16:52, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for asking, Valereee. Please do whatever you think best here – I have no objection whatsoever to an unblock under the conditions outlined above. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 18:25, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, JLaN! Postscript, I have unblocked. You can edit your user page to add the COI, or let me know if you need help, and once you've done that you're free to make edit requests at the articles in question. valereee (talk) 18:37, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
