taking info from other sites[edit]

Unfortunately, I've had to remove the info you added from this site [1] usually info added from other sites is under some sort of copyright, not in the public domain. You'd have to rewrite it or summarise and link to it with a reference. Sticky Parkin 11:46, 13 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sticky Parkin. Sorry, I'm pretty new to writing wiki articles. I have been given permission to use this text by the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust. My son has Retinoblastoma and I am a member of CHECT. The data which was previously on this article was perhaps a little lacking and unhelpful to readers. I asked permission to use this data in order to improve the article and make it a better resource for parents of Rb sufferers like myself.J Morley-Smith (talk) 13:20, 13 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You did well:) The info you added was great, however I think we'd need some proof that the trust/site is happy to do this. They need to know that they're not only allowing wikipedia to use this info, but it is then freed i.e. any other site or institution can use it as long as they say they got it from wikipedia, they don't even need to say it was originally from CECT. I'm off out for a mo now but I'll look up what proof they need to provide and if there's a way you can do it- otherwise you could just alter it a bit to be slightlyy more in your own words so it's no longer copyrighted. Sticky Parkin 15:04, 13 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Great...if you can let me know what I need to get from the trust, I'm sure they will provide it. They actually asked me to add some of the pictures from there site to the article earlier today so I have just been busy doing that. Thanks for your feedback.J Morley-Smith (talk) 15:13, 13 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi I asked someone who's more of an expert in the wiki's copyright rules and this is what she said. It's quite a long-winded thing I'm afraid, unless you can get the site to put a note on the site that they release the text under the GFDL. Until then it all has to be removed :(:(:( But it should only be a couple of weeks. The alternative is to rewrite it in your own words a bit and just link to the site as a reference.

This is what the lady told me, if you have any more probs I suggest you ask her as unlike me she know's what she's talking about:)

"Hi. :) There's two things she can do. One of them is easy, and one of them is a pain in the neck. The easy way is for her to ask them to put a note on the website releasing their material under GFDL. (They have to be specific that the release is GFDL or public domain; it can't be released for Wikipedia only.) If they do that, she can put a link to that release on the article's talk pages or on the image page. The contact name is unfortunately not enough proof. If the organization doesn't want to place a notice releasing material on their website, she can send a release letter from them to the Wikimedia Foundation according to the process described at WP:Permission. The e-mail must go to the Permission address there. This isn't something that can be processed by just any editor or administrator. The Communications Committee of the Wikimedia Foundation has a special task force for logging and addressing these things.

This process takes a little more time and sometimes requires follow-up, as I have had letters to the Wikimedia Foundation go unanswered. (I've always gotten a response by my second round.) It usually takes a week or two to clear the matter in this case. The permission letter also needs to be specific that the release is GFDL or public domain. WP:Permission has a link to a boiler plate release form that can be used for this purpose. Once she's sent the letters, the {{OTRS pending}} template can be pasted on the talk page of the articles. However, until the permissions letter is processed, any articles including material copied from these external sites should be blanked with the {{copyvio}} template. Please explain to her that this is only temporary until we go through the necessary verification procedure, and it is both to protect the copyright holder and Wikipedia.

Also, please, let me know if I can be of any assistance with any of this. :) User:Moonriddengirl"

This is really useful, thanks. I have contacted CHECT to see how they wish to proceed. Thanks again for your input. J Morley-Smith (talk) 10:21, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've had to remove this info until we're sure of the copyright. It's not personal- what you're adding is really useful, but we need to be sure of the permssion before we can use it. I'm sure you see why we do this- if wiki gets things like this wrong, it can mean things like someone's written and published a book or site themselves or something and suddenly found it on wiki. Please don't add it back or you might actually end up blocked from editing :( But there's millions of other articles here you could edit in the meantime, or you could even rewrite some of this in your own words. Hi Sticky Parkin. I finally got round to rewriting the Rb page. I've updated the wiki article, and would apreciate your comments if you have time. Thanks again for all your input on this article. J Morley-Smith (talk) 17:10, 27 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

British/English Spelling versus US Spelling?[edit]

{{helpme}}What is the Wikipedia view on spelling. When should the British spelling be used over the US equivalent (i.e. colour/color)?

This article has recently had all British spellings altered for the US versions. Although this really does not change the text or its meaning, the fact that someone felt the need to make this edit begs the question as to at what point should the line be drawn. This article was drawn up from an English source, hence the British spelling, but what is the Wikipedia policy on this? J Morley-Smith (talk) 07:58, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya. The relevant policy is at WP:SPELLING. Cheers! //roux   08:01, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:Whiteeyereflex.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. -- ТимофейЛееСуда. 02:05, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
