Hi Sarah, I really appreciate the feedback you provided for my article. I was having trouble with my references. So interviews with the person are not acceptable? As a novice in the world of Wikipedia, I am not that familiar with the referencing requirements. In writing my article, I checked the formatting and such with this one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ally_Carter and I thought I could use similar sources. Sorry for troubling you. Hi there. First, one tip I have to tell folks about is Wikipedia:OTHERSTUFF. There is always other stuff. It generally matters about your one article, more than anything else. I tagged Ally Carter for using too many primary sources. Technically, there are only two reliable sources there - News Watch and the Brisbane newspapers. Her own website and blogs about her are not reliable. So, please replace 1) any citations from her website or using content written by Frederick or her publishers 2) Anything from non-reliable sources like blogs or corporate websites. Interviews are ok as long as they are from credible reliable secondary sources. And yes, personal information from the subjects website, etc, is not a reliable source. ASTEP at AfC

I am stunned that you have declined Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Altitude SEE Test European Platform (ASTEP). I have nothing to do with this article or the organisation, but it is almost self-evident that it is notable. If this had come up at AfD, the very first thing we would do is click the "find sources" button, and the very first thing that comes up is an article in the peer reviewed IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science. Followed by numerous scholarly papers and even books about the subject. Surely just looking at the papers listed in the "Related publications" section of the article should be enough to establish notability.

The Foundation say that they want to encourage expert editors. With this kind of obstacle being put in their way it is no wonder that most of them turn round and walk away after the first attempt. Just to rub it in for this author, the logo has been put up for deletion. We would stand a better chance of keeping this editor if we were to help them by converting the logo licence to "fair use" (which as a logo for an organisation in an article about that organisation it easily qualifies of course) rather than kicking them with an unnecessary deletion.

If this is an example of what we are going to lose when bots are allowed to delete the 100,000 articles qualifying under CSD#G13 then it doesn't bear thinking about. If the system at AfC is to set the hurdle so high that editors give up and just add to the backlog then AfC has probably lost its way entirely. As a counterproductive project it should probably be wound up altogether. SpinningSpark 14:37, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I also had to remove half the article as it was copied from the author's publications. But, even in its reduced state, it seems notable enough to go into article space. World Digital Library

Thank you for inviting me to participate in the World Digital Library Wikipedia Partnership. It is always nice to hear from another northern California Wikipedian. After reading through available links describing the project, I question if the project would be a good fit for my interests and abilities. Perhaps you could answer a few questions to help me see how I might participate.

Assuming this wasn't a blanket invitation, why did you choose to invite me?

My historical interest focus is 19th and 20th century technology. I didn't see many articles within this area of interest on the to-do list; and for the few I found potentially interesting, I was unable to identify applicable sources within the World Digital Library (WDL). Could you steer me toward some WDL resources on the subject of 19th or 20th century technology?

Hi there. Are you involved in a WikiProject related to US History? That's probably how I stumbled across you. Generally people put their interests (i.e. "I'm into general US history" "I'm into historic places in Idaho") and perhaps you had a general interest or something so I invited you. I am specifically inviting people who I find express interest in subjects related to the WDL holdings. So perhaps I was mistaken, or perhaps someplace, on Wikipedia, you state you're interested in general history or...so far I've only covered African diaspora, Spainish history, general US history and certain states. But no, we don't have anything about 19th/20th century technology. Sorry if this was a mistake! Surely a good faith effort and perhaps it was an error in my part! World Digital Library information

Thank you for the invitation for working on the World Digital Library. I do want to work for it, as I do see information that I could expand (Latin America and the Iberian influence there in particular), and am strongly considering to sign up. There is a chance that I might not be able to work on it immediately, if much at all for the moment, however. Do I need to have my information in by a particular time? Hi! No, no specific time. It's an ongoing project. There's no pressure - at all. When you say information how to edit - I'm not sure if you mean strong guidance on editing in general? If so, the best place for that is the Teahouse. I'll do my best to support, but I will be supporting all of the project volunteers, including others that I help in other projects. So if you have specific answers on editing Wikipedia in general the Teahouse is the best place. But, anything WDL specific I'm happy to help with. World Digital Library

I understand why you invited me to join the World Digital Library, because we have met at Wikimania 2012 and before, and you can easily see my many contributions on history and other subjects. I can see many needed improvements to the Category:World Digital Library. I have not found articles in the WDL itself that I would use to contribute articles or improvements to articles in English Wikipedia. World Digital Library question

Hi Chris. Actually WDL images aren't all in the public domain, it's provided by partners around the world. Each image should have it's own image rights information. However, information related to the Codex are - as all Codex images, since they are so old. WDL is asking that I do not promote using our images, however, I'm not responsible for what people decide to with those images as long as they are used appropriately. ;) SarahStierch (talk) 20:11, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

Declined Mayor Patricia Matthews

Hello Sarah;

I had read and understood the Notability requirement for Wikipedia but felt that the Mayor of the fastest growing city in Canada was Notable. The article provides 36 references from Gold Medal Olympians to Statistics Canada and as such I felt it was well documented.

If you would be good enough to provide more detail and some suggestions to enhance the article, I would appreciate it. As you can see from the timeline this was not a trivial application.

Hi there. It's great that she's Mayor. Sadly, we need to meet the Wikipedia:POLITICIAN guidelines before we can have an article about her. It doesn't matter what city she is from or who she is, or who she knows. And having a "mere mention" - i.e. one mention that she did something with an Olympian doesn't matter. Hi Sarah;

I did read the references you supplied and in fact, I had read them prior to creating the page. Mayor Matthews is referred to constantly in major papers and Alberta TV. This week alone she was in the Calgary Harold (with photos) twice. The Gold Medal Olympian reference was just one of 30+ already in the article. If I just listed all of the articles and references, I would need many pages but the article would be unreadable. Should I create a section called EXTERNAL LINKS and then provide a list of some additional references or is there some other preferred methodology?

Really really appreciate your acceptance of this article. Many thanks. Your co-editors could do a better job, when rejecting articles, though. Constructive help instead of hurtful and deflating comments, especially if done multiple times, are not encouraging. All useful submissions should be valued, if you are an encyclopedia. Especially in novel areas. I understand the requirement for facts, but in a submission like my one it is very obvious that the miriad blog pictures and news cuttings, a University published memorial tribute book with ISBN , and an honarary Phd award from a recognised quality University cannot be fabricated, even today.

My questions:

Do I have to go through this long depressing process to submit a further article(s)? I couldn't help noticing that many Wiki articles have just a few lines, no references, perhaps one link and the header "references required".

This subject article has been rather drastically edited since the latest (3rd) rejection, on the lines suggested, before you relieved us of our anxiety. The "orphan", "links", "intricate detail", have been amended considerably. How do I go about getting re-consideration, re: this clause removal?

WikiProject U.S. Roads

I was wondering if the World Digital Library will be able to be used on articles subordinate to Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Roads? My number one focus on Wikipedia is editing articles on roads in the US (mainly Interstate highways, U.S. highways, and Georgia state routes). If the WDL can be used, I would appreciate it if you would please show me how. Also, since I have never used the WDL before, I have no idea how to start doing it. Thank you so much for your help. Hi there. You can search at WDL.org in the general search box. However, I don't believe WDL, at this time, has a lot to do with US roads. For four months I've been working on these to-do lists, and you might find something US roads related. Check out the North America page here. For the most part, I was editing one of my sandbox pages, to be able to convert U.S. Route 78 in South Carolina from a redirect to an actual article. World Digital Library and photos from the website

Is it possible to use the images as well as the information off of the website. I did sign up today, and saw the Castillo del Morro page being beneficial for use of citing as well as the photo. WDL?

Sarah--Thanks for mentioning the WDL on my usertalk page. I signed up for the project, but don't know what (if any) useful resources that might get me. For example, today, I was editing the Robert Carter III page at my local library's closed stacks. I wanted to include a picture, but I don't know if the only known picture of him is on the WDL. It's on the cover of the Levy book I read and cited, as well as posted on the Virginia Historical Society website, http://www.vahistorical.org/dynasties/robertcarter.htm. Plus, I'd like to add sources, and the Dictionary of Virginia Biography mentions a periodical called the American Quarterly, to which the reference librarian thinks our Arlington doesn't subscribe. Any suggestions? I'd love to come to the event in Bethesda tomorrow evening, and am sorry I missed yesterday's, but I need to return to Chicago....Jweaver28 (talk) 22:35, 29 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi there. I'm not sure what to do about the journals the Virginia library doesn't subscribe to. I'm only focused on the WDL project - working on improving articles using WDL webpages and other pages when I find them (i.e. using the Virginia site to improve an article). You'd have to talk to a library or look online I guess to try to find access to the American Quarterly. Sorry I can't provide much input. I'm also not sure if WDL is the only place with any images of Carter. You can see a discussion about the images on WDL here. That's also a great place to ask questions, as staff members from WDL do watch it. I don't live in the DC area anymore, so I won't be attending the event in Maryland. (Or..couldn't...I guess!) Hi and thanks for the quick reply. It doesn't appear that the photo (the only one known of Carter according to his biographer) is yet in the WDL. It seems that Brown University's library, and Florida's library/archives participate in the WDL, but maybe not the Library of Virginia and the Virginia Historical Society, even though I thought I once saw a GLAM link at least at the former or concerning William & Mary's Swem library. Are there per-institution or per-state contacts, or do I just do my Ms. Magoo thing at those places and hope?Jweaver28 (talk) 10:38, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

When you restored File:Herwald Ramsbotham, 1st Viscount Soulbury.jpg, were you doing so just on the basis of OTRS ticket 2013012410005334 or are you in possession of other information validating the authenticity of the license? The image was deleted on the basis of a PUI discussion because the claim of permission was not believed. Is restoring the image a Foundation action or a regular admin one? Both images seem to be scanned from either a newspaper or magazine, so there needs to be some explanation of where the images came from and how this individual became the copyright holder. For example, merely being in possession of an old newspaper clipping does not make you the copyright holder. --B (talk) 10:07, 1 June 2013 (UTC)

Also, when you add {{OTRS received}}, please specify the ticket number, e.g. {{Template:OTRS received|2013052910011285}}. If no reply to our request for followup has been received a month from now and we're looking at the image to either delete it or send another email to the copyright holder, then we need to know the ticket to do that. --B (talk) 10:57, 1 June 2013 (UTC)
I thought I had "re-deleted" the image. Perhaps that was one of the other 300 OTRS permission tickets I processed yesterday. So having one slip up ain't too bad ;) I do try to assume good faith, and I was allowing the permission person to claim further information about the item (I don't remember what I replied to them with). 300 is impressive! I saw a lot of them had disappeared. Regarding assume good faith, that's true, but the one thing to keep in mind is that good faith != good understanding. A lot of people incorrectly believe "I'm in possession of it" = "I own the copyright". There are other people who think that "publicly available" = "public domain". Heck, there was even a lawyer that I processed a ticket from who insisted that the mandatory copyright registration requirement is still in place. (It is not, but in order to collect statutory damages, you have to register your copyright. If you don't, you can only collect actual damages.) If the person claiming to be the copyright holder is some person other than the photographer, then we need to have a good explanation of how that person became the copyright holder. I don't think it's necessary for them to prove it (that's where assume good faith comes in) but they at least should demonstrate understanding. --B (talk) 00:06, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi Sarah, the notability of this 'bad bank'-like institution is beyond doubt since it's one of only two institutions of this kind in Germany (the other one being FMS WM, the band bank of HRE). It will wind down major positions which originate from UK business, thus it's relevant to the UK as well. The citation of EU commission sources is highly official, reliable and independant. Yet, I have added some more references to articles from major newspapers. The problem with EAA in the news is that it's always mentioned in connection with WestLB since EAA is a direct result of the break-up of WestLB demanded by the EU commission. Sarah: Thanks so much for reviewing my article. I hope you don't mind if I make a couple of short points. First, Wiki has a "subcategory" (for lack of a better term) for "Reggae." There are many accomplished reggae artists included in this subcategory, many of which reference Jim Fox directly within their articles. Having a "Reggae" subcategory without including Jim Fox is like having a "Soul" subcategory and not including Barry Gordy. He is responsible for almost half of all reggae albums recorded. I realize that he may not meet "notability" standards based on a lack of wide coverage in media, but let's face it, there are very few media outlets who cover reggae music, and the ones that do are not considered "reliable" by some editors.

I reference a very detailed 3-part series strictly about Fox and his studio which I wrote and published to World-A-Reggae, one of only two internationally known reggae news and reviews sites on the web. The 3-part series includes detailed interviews with several living reggae legends who have detailed pages on Wiki. Each speaks directly to and about Fox's significance and influence as a record producer. One of the artists interviewed about Fox, Junior Marvin, was the lead guitarist for Bob Marley and the Wailers! I'm at a loss, really. Are there any reggae sources you would accept as reliable? Makes me wonder how all of the reggae artists got pages here.

Please don't misunderstand my message. I am looking for answers. A solution. Can you give me some guidance? Would you consider accepting my 3-part series as a reliable source? It was published to 3 different reggae news zines, all of which are held in high regard in the reggae community.

Hi Mike. You're welcome to resubmit the article and another Wikipedian will come by and review it. You can also get additional help here: WP:TEAHOUSE, a space I co-designed to help editors find easy, fast and friendly help. A few things:
  1. Being listed in other Wikipedia articles doesn't establish notability for subjects.
  2. That's the same article being listed in three different publications. First, the blogs are not reliable secondary sources. Very few blogs are (i.e. the New York Times blog, but even that is challenged frequently) so don't keep that one.
  3. Chose the one you think is the most notable and reliable in the reggae community. It doesn't matter if your article was published in 3 zines, as long as it's published in one reliable secondary source.
  4. You could always ask for help from editors who have written about reggae artists. I would suggest asking for help on the talk page for Wikipedia:WikiProject Reggae. They can give you input and probably educated second opinions on the article.

Hi there. I noticed that the Hu Zhengyan article did not used World Digital Library's website as a source, thus I don't need to track it for data purposes. Unless I was incorrect and missed the citation entirely? Please let me know. And no, sadly I don't have access to anything else. If you need something, I might be able to put you in touch with someone. WDL doesn't have an archive of it's own. We're an entirely digital project that has an office of about 10 people in the offices of the Library of Congress. Partners - even the Library of Congress - sends WDL staff digitized images, writings and metadata and WDL staff then does all the magic for it and puts it on their website (surprisingly very time consuming). So WDL itself does not. If you know of a certain partner that you think might have something, then I can maybe put you in touch with them through email. THanks for all of your involvement! Citation number 8, last time I checked - it uses Theo's {{cite wdl}} template, but the bot that updates the refs is currently down, so that's probably why you missed it. Hi there. I did remove one of the external links for the Zebra, as we don't put links for websites in the article content (see WP:EXTERNAL). I'd also remove the promotional quote from Ross Gautreau. It reads like you're trying to subtly promote the website by having someone quoted as saying how great the website is. If you don't remove it, I might, or someone else will. ANd of course, anything uncited can be removed without question. I'd resubmit it if I was you, I think it will have a better chance of being accepted now. Also, one tip: don't forget to sign your posts to talk pages. Hi there. It's probably a good idea to have someone else review this one (feel free to resubmit). I look at it as it still shows that most of the citations (majority) are written by or written with the subject as an editor. And my lack of knowledge about the subject past the basics of my first review mean I don't feel as adequate to review it this second time. I wish I could, but, I'd like a second opinion. So feel free to resubmit, but remember - if there aren't enough reliable secondary sources that DON'T involve the subject writing it (i.e. articles written about him) then it is still troublesome. That's great that you found so many reliable secondary sources. The article still has no inline citations displaying the notability in the actual article. So I'd expand the article with reliable secondary sources and remove anything uncited. Until reliable secondary sources are added into the article, we can't really do much else. Feel free to remove the templates when you want as long as the article is improved. The talk page is a good place to discuss things, but, in the end we need to have sources citing the article itself. Hi Roger. In theory, an entire article should be cited with reliable sources. If you aren't associated with the organization, then it'd be pretty tough for you to get that information without a conflict of interest, and having COI when writing Wikipedia is against policy (you can get blocked for editing on behalf of someone or something). So, without reliable secondary sources citing content in that article, it will be removed. I hope that helps! It makes the article as reliable as it can be - and Wikipedia isn't a phone book or an advertising website, so it's important we have reliable content, even if Wikipedia:Other stuff exists. Hi! I have taken an interest in improving Bikini and so over the past several days have worked on rationalizing the image selection and layout. Today I stopped by the article for another quick look, and saw that you had made a disambiguation-edit. I am not familiar with Wikipedia administrators and how they function, so I looked at your minute-by-minute contributions today to try to place the bikini-edit, and was overwhelmed by the amt. of editing you're doing. I don't know how you became aware that a photo caption in the article on the bikini need disambiguating, but I was happy so I clicked a button in the article's edit history next to your record that supposedly would let me "thank" you (for the edit), although I have no idea how/if that works or what message of thanks you'd receive, if any...so I thought I'd just leave you a message here.

Thus, however it came to your attention that Athletics had to be disambiguated to Athletics(sport) in a photo caption in the bikini article, I just wanted to thank you for making the correction!! Azx2 18:58, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

Articles for creation/Wouter Van Belle

Among the sources used are 2 major nieuwspapers, a magazine and public television channel, which all have en.wiki entries:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canvas_(Belgium)‎
And they all pretty much cite the subject as having contributed to the succes of bands, which nearly all have wikipedia entries.

So I remain confused, especially when looking at other wikipages with close to none referencing, in the same domain, notably http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axelle_Red

Hi there. First, that Axelle Red article (and you link to another Wikipedia article by simply typing [[Wikipedia article title]]) is a pretty poor musical act example. I actually tagged it as lacking reliable secondary sources (WP:RS). Remember, WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS but that doesn't matter, all that matters is the one article we are looking at - and that is your article submission. You can find some good inspiration on how to write a good musician biography here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Musicians. I am traveling so you can generally get a faster response on the talk page there, where the specialize in music biographies, or at the Teahouse: WP:TEAHOUSE. Anyway, to be included in Wikipedia, a subject has to be significantly covered in a reliable secondary source. Significantly means an entire article written about the subject or they are featured heavily in the article. You can learn more about that here: Wikipedia:Notability (music). I'm pretty sure I linked to it in the pink box on the rejection section of the submission you made.
Here are the concerns about your citations:
  • [1] the subject is merely mentioned twice. This article isn't about the subject, he's just mentioned twice in it. That is not significant.
  • [2] is a mere mention again (not significant)
  • [3] his name isn't even mentioned here
  • [4] the subject is mentioned once as a talent scout. There are lots of non-notable talent scouts. One name drop in Billboard is not significant.
  • [5] this is not a reliable source
  • [6] similar to the Billboard mention. You could use this to say he manages bands but it doesn't establish his notability.
  • [7] this is a primary source and thus not notable
  • [8][9] these are the two that cover him significantly as being a judge on television shows.
I'm not saying he shouldn't be on Wikipedia. But, please remove the unreliable sources (the primary sources I mentioned), either cite or remove anything uncited with a reliable secondary source, and remove any promotional language (claims of commercial success, we don't care - he's clearly made an impact if he gets a Wikipedia article, an we have to keep Wikipedia super boring). Even words like "This would mark a long standing relationship between blahblah..." is romanticizing and promotional in nature. Just keep it to the facts and nothing more. Feel free to resubmit then. How to improve my article

As for references, are the national radio/6 Music Blog on the artist, and I-tunes chart positioning's not enough? Or are they acceptable but should the individuals social media links be replaced for more sources like the ones I got from the Guardian?

If there are any tips on how I can improve this article, so it could one day be considered for creation, please let me know.

EDIT: was also confused as to why the first BBC link on the artist is unacceptable? It's information according to the pages disclaimer comes from Third party sources , only approved/checked by the BBC.

Hi there. First, I am traveling, so for future reference and fast response, I advise visiting the WP:TEAHOUSE or WikiProject Music for further help. The latter specializes in musical biographies, you can visit them here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Musicians. Please note, you can make a short and simple link to another Wikipedia article about simply writing the title of the article (i.e. Nancy Elizabeth) and putting two brackets around it like this: [[Nancy Elizabeth]], that makes Nancy Elizabeth. On that note, remember WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. We only care about the article you are working on, not the other crap (and we have 4 million articles) on Wikipedia. The reason Nancy Elizabeth's article is on Wikipedia is because she has entire reviews devoted to her in major reliable sources. Her article has a lot of problems though - the editors have used blogs, which are not reliable. OK, here is why there are problems with your submission:
  1. We have notability guidelines for musicians. I linked to it in your article decline. I suggest you read up on it here: Wikipedia:Notability (music). This means that not every person or band gets an article on Wikipedia.

  8. [13] this is the best source you have. It's an article entirely about him (significant coverage) in a reliable secondary source. This helps establish notability.
  9. [14] this is a mere mention in a long list of other music on a reliable source website. We would need some more of these to make him notable.

I wold just like to thank you for your incredibly swift response, even whilst traveling. That means a lot!

While you are busy, i will learn more about and make use of the links you gave me which also offer advice on the music sections.

My final query would be this. For the artist in question, regarding the charts His Record charted at #28 on the I-tunes Singer-songwriter Albums chart, passing ed sheeran et al. This was also in the Guardian , issued last week. Is this rank/position not notable enough?

I will continue using wiki, and maybe one day have gathered enough information from more appropriate sources! I will re-submit this in a month if I can find more substantial evidences.
