hey hello, i'm what i think is called a newbie, so i may need some help standing on my feet before i get more actively involved. i suppose my first task should be to find the discussion pages, as i don't want to get into editing yet, i'd rather be on the backstage and contribute to the discussions first. is that ok?

That is the best way to go about it. For any page in WP, there is a discussion page associated with it which can be found using the "talk" tab. There is a link on the navigation template to all recent philosophy discussions. This is basically any discussion on the talk page of any article within the WP:PHILO project (within the past few hours). The central discussion area is for questions and issues needing the wider attention of the philosophy project. You can create your own "watchlist" of articles that you care about particularly by clicking on the little star at the top of the page. Editing an article will also put it, and its talk page on you watchlist.

At some point I hope you are not so bashful, and go ahead and edit away. If you want practice without changing anything in the articles, you can always edit your userspace any way you want by creating a "sandbox" (mine is a bit cluttered) which is just the name of subpages of your userpage (i.e. User:Majnun o'squirrel/Sandbox/test1). You can cut and paste text from other areas, and test how it works there.

PS. When you sign a post, use four tildes ~~~~ and it will sign your custom signature with the date. Greg Bard (talk) 19:40, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Nice one mate, thanks that's all very very warm and useful! i'll try to make myself useful in the future, i'm at a philosophy department so probably we could have good resources. thanks for all the links, i'll try to devote some time within the week to chip into some discussions. though sunday there's a wikipedia social in london which i'm planning to go, hopefully i'll make some good friends there too :)

You can always get a hold of people on their own talk pages, just like this one. (you can always contact me here). Some people have designated in their preferences that they can be contacted via email. In those cases there should be a link on the sidebar to "email user" when you visit their user page or user talk page.Greg Bard (talk) 22:02, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
