RfA Statistics

Hi Matt - Do you know if there are statistics that show any correlation between RfA nomination success/failure and edit counts? I'm essentially looking for an edit count median point (and maybe a distribution plot), below which RfAs tend to fail, and above which RfAs tend to succeed. Or is there a consensus based floor on edit counts? Whenever you get a chance, if you do. Thanks. — Becksguy (talk) 06:49, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi, he just uploaded another joke-image with File:Babalu2.jpg. Could you delete it? --aktsu (t / c) 10:28, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Requests for comment/A Nobody

I added an outside view (of sorts) here. In it I laid out some points where I disagreed with the RfC as written (and noted that you, Lar and I wrote it). I also attempted to head off some criticism. If you like I can move it into the main section of the dispute, but I don't think it will be necessary. Protonk (talk) 18:47, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

Review

MBisanz, would you be so kind as to review this: Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#Unintentional_oversight_of_admins.3F, just as a sanity check?

I'm a little curious as to what the problem was in the first place. — BQZip01 — talk 01:52, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

That seems to be related to the sports logo issue, which isn't something I want to step into, unless I am the person who deleted the images, but my first sample showed it to be Zscout. MBisanz talk 02:38, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
Oh, sorry. I was meaning for you to just check procedure. Am I doing this right? I'm not asking you to weigh in on the subject (though I believe you thought most of these were Commons-worthy). — BQZip01 — talk 03:55, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Sockpuppetry

Hi. You were helpful in removing a serial sockpuppeteer User:Londo06 last year. Now he's back as User:Lando09. I was wondering if you knew what to do about this: Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Londo06/Archive. I'm at a loss.--Jeff79 (talk) 21:46, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Help me with my phrasing, then

I fully realise an RFC cannot, in itself, lead to a ban. Technically, my view is that he should withdraw from Wikipedia voluntarily for his own safety, given the imminent threat to him posed by these external forces that would do him bodily harm for his participation in Wikipedia. A ban would only follow should he return. I think there's a fairly sizable group that shares my opinion, and I hope strong support for my view will do something to help him realize that I'm not some lone bitter guy that leaves messages on his talk page.

There's always a chance that AN will actually respond to the RFC and do something that helps repair this situation. My personal expectation is that he will not: he has stated that he will not read or consider any RFC about him in the past, and the notice of sudden illness on his talk page makes it seem even more likely that he will not respond to this one.

My personal expectation is that this RFC will fail in the sense that AN will take no notice of it whatsoever. At that time, it probably will be time to move to WP:AN. I'll try to muzzle myself a bit for now, and if you have more RFC-friendly phrasing, feel free to suggest it.—Kww(talk) 00:52, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

  • That first paragraph really walks the razor's edge. I know that you don't mean it, but it could be read as "keep away from wikipedia, or you'll be hurt". I don't think that it is necessary to go down that road nor do I think that the response would be proportionate. I see this as one of two ways. Either he was serious about his harassment and did what he thought was necessary to protect himself but couldn't stay away from wikipedia or he got himself into a corner over last summer and things just escalated to where he felt he had no other options. The first assumes that the harassment specifically mentioned was real, the second assumes it was not. either way we have some reason to believe that he has been harassed (on/off wiki, though maybe not physically), though maybe not at the moment of vanishing. Regardless, this is a tender moment. You and I disagree on this, but I feel we (the narrow we of this discussion and the broad we of the community) can just hand him that mulligan. I think we can say "look, you messed up there but we don't need to dwell on it". That doesn't mean the new name is a blank slate, technically all past talk pages and contributions (WTE of his confirmed socks) link to the new account. Apart from the business of which name to use, all the information is there for review. I know this isn't necessarily helping you refine your comment on the RfC, but I figured I should add that warning. Protonk (talk) 01:14, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
  • I certainly meant the people he has referred to as the reason for his vanishment. I was willing to tolerate the community decision to allow him back based on him not reentering areas where he had had conflicts, even though I disagreed with it. Since we are simply back exactly where we were before the vanishing, I just don't see the situation as being substantially different than the violation of any other kind of editing restriction on formerly blocked users.—Kww(talk) 01:22, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Harlow image

Hi, did you get hold of a copy of the book you were looking for to confirm the Harlow image is in it? SlimVirgin talk|contribs 01:22, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

According to my interlibrary loan request, it is still: Request Sent. MBisanz talk 02:38, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
To help you find it, the full citation is Harlow, H.F. (1974). "Induction and alleviation of depressive states in monkeys," pp. 197-208 in White, N.F. (ed.) Ethology and psychiatry. University of Toronto Press. The image appears as figure 5, p. 201.
Could you clarify the status of your deletion request? The image source wasn't the basis of it, so even with that confirmed it's unclear where things stand. SlimVirgin talk|contribs 21:21, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Admin backlog

I've undone this edit of yours as being an admin is not required to work on that category.--Rockfang (talk) 00:50, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

The MediaWiki software is only enabled for admins to rename images, how is that not an admin backlog? MBisanz talk 00:52, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
Any editor can go to that category and look for an image that needs to be renamed. I used to do this with album covers. I'd find one, reupload it under a better name, switch any related articles to the new image, and tag the old image as being orphaned. The old file would be deleted, and as a result would be removed from the category.--Rockfang (talk) 00:57, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
Right, but as of today they turned a feature on in the software that lets admins rename images the same way pages are renamed so we do not lose the file history. MBisanz talk 01:21, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
Ok. I can understand where having a file history would be important for GFDL files and such, but it doesn't seem that important for non-free files. It may be preferrred that the images be moved/rename via the software method, but it isn't required.--Rockfang (talk) 01:53, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
I'd say it's much preferred though, to preserve history (log and contribs) and to preserve space, just as copy&paste page moves are strongly discouraged since actual page moves have been implemented. Amalthea 21:00, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

I nominated this image for deletion because it lacked evidence of permission. The uploader suggested on his/her talkpage that an OTRS was pending. Was a "pending" template added to the picture? Hekerui (talk) 07:09, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

Something doesn't look right with this CHU

Hey I think something wacked out with a CHU you recently executed. I can't find any record of it in the CHU archives but User talk:Torstein currently redirects to User talk:Torstein (usurped) which has a request dated only yesterday to usurp and the page history shows you renamed the account. But take a look at User:Tfrogner, which I suspect was the account that was being renamed. The user doesn't exist but the user and talk pages have extensive history. And if you go to this page Special:Undelete/File:Stoltenberg arrives at Stortinget.jpg you'll find that supposedly Torstein created the page in 2005 but the file history attributes Tfrogner - same date and time of course. I came across this because the Tfrogner pages showed up on Wikipedia:Database reports/Ownerless pages in the user space. --Doug.(talk contribs) 21:00, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Well the record is at Wikipedia:Changing_username/SUL/Completed/9#Tfrogner_.E2.86.92_Torstein, I'll have to look at it more in a bit to see what went wrong. MBisanz talk 21:22, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Do these images by a long banned user look like self work to you? This single photo may indeed be self work (I'm not sure though it looks like it was cropped) but the rest look like they were sourced from a computer web site and are artificial. Thank you.  єmarsee Speak up! 23:05, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

why delete?

I'm interested in the rationale for deleting File:InTheNews20090222.png. It's based on a screenshot of Wikipedia, and I believe they're allowed. What is, or was, the problem? I received a message a few days ago that said the "source" field wasn't filled out, and that the file would be deleted if it was a fair-use image. But it's not (I don't think). So the source field is empty, and that's a reason to delete? That's a pretty empty rationale, in context, when the field above it says "from the main page of Wikipedia" and the field below it says the author is me. Why wouldn't I fill out "source" then?—perhaps because it's redundant—a conjunction of "wikipedia" and "me"? I don't understand these games. Outriggr (talk) 00:30, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

Well whomever informed you of the deletion criteria was mistaken. Every image regardless of if it is free or non-free must have a source or it will be deleted (see Wikipedia:CSD#F4). MBisanz talk 00:33, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
Could you respond to the substance of what I said? The source of the image is eminently clear, so why did you delete it? How about you restore it, and I'll fill in some more of the same information that's already there. Outriggr (talk) 00:45, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
Restored and the substantive answer is that I don't make the rules, I just follow them :) MBisanz talk 00:46, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
As a comment, he did respond to the substance of what you said. The image is transformed enough from a simple screenshot that I could easily be unsure of the source. And as MBisanz pointed out, every image needs source information, or else it gets deleted. That may seem like games to you, but the reasoning is that attribution history is vital for free downstream use. Something that is plain to you may be opaque to a downstream user (attribution was unclear to me, and I was privy to this conversation). Just a comment. Protonk (talk) 00:55, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

Seeking advice and information

When there are minority groups which are being suppressed by the society, like for example national minorities, religious minorities etc.. what mechanism does WIKI provide to allow their view to be presented accurately? It is currently possible for a few Wiki addicts to completely block (and is currently a state of fact) such sensitive topics, where the in-flow of information, by people adding meaningful content, is much less than the count of disrupting attempts, even on articles which have several thousands of views per day. Atmapuri (talk) 18:56, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

See WP:NPOV MBisanz talk 05:13, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

This only covers reasonable cases. You only need a group of people with common prejudice against a minority to create a persistent POV. And if you have multiple people paid for by an organization, whose job is to present a particular POV to protect their financial interests? Such edits will not be done upfront, but spanned through time. Information will be passed between such editors behind the scenes and by forming majority in case of need, can always achieve the goal of hiding (deleting) information. Simply looking at the edits for 1 month back will not show anything special, except that some group of editors mostly only deletes content. Thanks! Atmapuri (talk) 05:38, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

I have done some reading and it seems that behavior like that is called tag teaming and that in such a situation an attention of an administrator would be suggested. The article in question is [vegetarianism]. Most of the additions in the last year have been deleted by two users only: Bob98133 and Sikh-History. After they were no longer as successful in their tagging about 2 months ago, they got help from Sinneed, a Wiki addict (by her own account). The article is virtually blocked for any additions or meaningful edits for an extended period of time with article quality constantly on descend, with every second sentence showing signs of edit wars. Their long term goal is to reduce and remove any claims that vegetarianism is any better than any other diet. The standard tactics include: adding who tags, moving content parts to its own sections, making the content look out of place and then suggesting deletion, claiming POV, personal attacks, stubbing of contents, requesting over referencing (there is no freely readable line of text in the whole article). etc.. At least Bob98133 and Sikh-History are connected behind the scenes, because when Bob gets in to trouble he calls in Sikh-History. All three are very refined in their approach and would easily fool a casual observer. I believe that the content of vegetarianism is highly sensitive and a needle in the eye of many people with commercial interests and that this could well be an organized effort. I could be wrong and people just have personal reasons for such a behavior, but if somebody can spent 8 hours per day on Wiki.. In either case, I wish the article could be saved, before it is completely destroyed, which could take about 1 year at the current rate. Because there are frequently people who find the content of the article shocking, I would suggest that vegetarians can present their case (referenced) in the main body with Criticism section separately below. There are many views that vegetarians hold as true, which are not recognized by the FDA, or the country, or all scientists and many facts are being removed on these grounds. Atmapuri (talk) 13:39, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi Atmapuri, I'm just wandering by randomly and thought I'd answer. I can understand your concern, but neither MBisanz nor any other one editor gets to make these decisions. These kinds of questions have been argued by thousands of people, and you can read what conclusions we eventually came to at WP:NPOV. Some of the links from that page will be helpful, as well. You also may want to discuss this at our conflict-of-interest noticeboard, WP:COIN - Dank (push to talk) 21:30, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Code of conduct

Hi Matt, best of luck with your first semester of law, I know it's not easy. I don't support promoting this page to policy, but I want to hear your thinking on this. Do you believe Wikipedians in general should be paying more attention to that page on wikimedia.org? What is it we should be doing, and what's the most relevant en.wp policy page for that discussion? (Watching) - Dank (push to talk) 21:35, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Well I think that page summarizes a fair number of concepts that we struggle with at WP. Promoting ideas like honesty, confidentiality, respect, protecting property, and representing the best interests of the community to others (BLP, PROT, etc). Quite frankly it is annoying that there is no policy out there that says "You may not lie about your intentions or credentials" or that Wikipedia:Community doesn't point to a policy saying that you must act in the best interests of the encyclopedia when editing (as opposed to your own interests, those of your company, friends, etc). MBisanz talk 00:52, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
The feds won't put me in jail for lying, but they might put me in jail for lying on my taxes ... what is it that you'd like Wikipedians to be more honest about? WP:OUTING seems to me to cover confidentiality, but I'm open to expanding it. What you're saying about the encyclopedia's interests vs. self-interest sounds like WP:COI to me, but that's a guideline; would you like to promote some of the material there to policy status? Concerning lying about credentials, it's been 2.5 years since WP:ESSJAY, so maybe it's time to revisit that. Is this a "hot" issue? Is someone lying about their credentials in a way that's causing harm? - Dank (push to talk) 02:38, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Recheck of OTRS ticket

Can you please have another look at OTRS:2708999? It doesn't appear to specify a usable license, just a copy/paste of the default email, with the image name inserted where the license should be. Question

Hey Matt, would you be able to tell me a little bit about what an ARBCOM clerk is required to do and how to become involved, either on my talk page or via e-mail. Thanks for any help. Grsz11 04:10, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Arbcom clerks maintain the arbitration related cases for the committee. They open cases, enforce the rules as to length and type of comments, move things around (like section headings, etc), and then close cases. They become involved by applying to the clerks-l@lists.wikimedia.org list. MBisanz talk 20:20, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Concerning edit summary

Dear MBisanz, regarding this, is there additional action taken on the part of WMF or OTRS/ArbCom? Has Risker been notified? What is the procedure in this case? Only denial? Basket of Puppies 04:27, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Oversighter removed it, WMF and OTRS don't care about such things, Arbcom also generally isn't interested, Risker is aware of such general threats. MBisanz talk 04:28, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
I see. At least Risker knows of it so she can contact the authorities if she deems it necessary. Basket of Puppies 04:31, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your concern, Basket of Puppies. That's actually one of the milder epithets I've been subject to, no worries. I just don't like to see stuff like that left lying around or being considered acceptable, as it makes the wiki not a very nice experience for editors when they see each other being subjected to such negativity. :-) Risker (talk) 04:50, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

ANI Deletion

Hello! I'm trying to learn more about how the admin system works (in the hopes of pursuing an RfA of my own in a few months), and just wondered if you could explain in a little more detail why you deleted the section at ANI? I ask because I would haven't deleted it as I felt that it was something that needed to be further investigated by admins...but...with the user IP hopping, I'm not sure that there was anything that could have been done about it. So, I'm just trying to find out a little bit more about why. Thanks! Frmatt (talk) 04:29, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

An oversighter deleted the log entry as libelous and that thread would have only further perpetrated the libel. MBisanz talk 04:30, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Mass image deletions?

Hi, MBisanz. I noticed you fulfilled the deletion request I put on File:RIT Alumni - Tom Curley.jpg. The uploader, User:Koo86, has done some great work improving the Rochester Institute of Technology article, but he/she has recently begun uploading images and none of them have source or license information. He/she is also completely non-communicative (aside from removing the Tom Curley image after it was tagged for deletion). How do you suggest I proceed? And if that suggestion involves mass-nominating Koo86's images for deletion, do you know of a quick and/or easy way to do so? Thanks. Powers T 14:11, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Try EmailUsering him and Twinkle has a quick nomination feature, no other mass-action tools I know of. MBisanz talk 22:52, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Hello, I was just curious about why you granted the autoreviewer right to User:JimCubb. This user has never created a page, so, according to Wikipedia:Autoreviewer, there's absolutely no reason for him to be an autoreviewer. Agolib (talk) 20:14, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

Uh, okay. I just saw a few of the users you've granted the right to who hadn't created the recommended number of articles, but this particular user hadn't even created a single article. Warning to Brews_ohare

Thank you for this warning. I will so desist. I wish to note, however, that under no interpretation of the Topic Ban that I can understand does my adding to the discussion of the ban itself as invited by the posting of the ban proper constitute a violation of that ban. Hi Matt. Abtract is asking for an unblock. As he's promised to not again do anything so disruptive as revert an arbitrator on the committee noticeboard talk page, I'm inclined to accept the request—but only with the following conditions:

  • You support the block being lifted;
  • It is made clear, and Abtract accepts, that if he does repeat his earlier actions, another 72-hour block will be placed on his account (and in that case no request for an early unblock will be accepted).

Your thoughts would be welcome on Abtract's talk page. Regards, AGK 12:23, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

Request for a decision - Socionics arbitration between rmcnew and tcaudillig

Can you guys please hurry up and make a decision? This is just getting more and more rediculous the more it drags on and tcaullidig keeps talking loads of crap about me concerning things that happened outside of wikipedia and is now even claiming to have in his posession some supposed database of a website I owned and never gave him permission to have. I think he is just bullshitting about it or in the event he does have it may have obtained it illegally through some slight of hand methods and is now trying to blackmail me with it.

And also, I would be perfectly alright with receiveing a 3 month ban from wikipedia per my own request, as editing here gets sort of addictive and I think I should have a break from this place. Feel free to give tcaullldig a ban too for other reasons. He seems to have given wikipedia a couple already. Ad hominem attacks, insulting other editors, being uncooperative with other editors, and claiming to have illegially stolen an internet database, personal, and other information from specific editors with blackmail threats being legitimate reaons for that ban. This information against tcaulldig is all recorded and accessable from a talk page in the arbitration area. Thanks. --Rmcnew (talk) 16:16, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

User:Betacommand Arbcom Enforcement Request

I don't see that you take mentoring User:Betacommand to act in a civil manner with any sort of seriousness. He's been allowed to personally attack and stalk me. Apparently he gets dozens more chances than anyone else. I'm not assuming good faith, Bot operators have a personal beef against me, and the requirements for an indef block are clearly spelled out. None were met, but you came out swinging, without offering evidence, with nothing but the suggestion from Betacommand, who has been stalking and attacking me, that something be done. Then you decide what has to be done is I have to be indef blocked.

So, give Betacommand a dozen more chances and see how far that gets the community. Make a dozen more anybot fiascos because bot operators don't want to listen to community input. Nothing I can do about it, is there, when you choose to abuse the community's trust and your responsibility against an apparent newbie editor. I hope you enjoyed it.

A tag has been placed on File:Lightening bryce.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I10 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a file that is not an image, sound file or video clip [i.e. a Word document or PDF file] that has no encyclopedic use.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. I thought maybe it could be OTRS'ed and moved to Commons...but it cannot. I can then give his comments in the DR. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 20:09, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

I suggest you resurrect the article you deleted about this man earlier this year. There has now been a documentary made about him which has a Wikipedia page. It would be strange to argue that a biopic documentary is notable while the subject is not.

I personally came to Wikipedia after watching the trailer in order to find out more about this man.Pisomojado (talk) 21:58, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on File:Henson-Willliam 03.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia.

You're invited!

In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, review the recent Wikipedia Takes Manhattan, plan for the next stages of projects like Wikipedia at the Library and Wikipedia Loves Landmarks, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, for example particular problems posed by Wikipedia articles about racist and anti-semitic people and movements (see the September meeting's minutes).

In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and generally enjoy ourselves and kick back.

You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.

Quick question about images on Wikipedia and at Commons

Hi, MBisanz. Thanks for all your work correcting images that needed renaming. I've been cleaning up some of the loose-ends from the renames hence all recent speedy deletes. I have a quick question that perhaps you can answer. Many of the images in the Henson-William series (such as File:Henson-William_03.jpg) have duplicates at the Wikipedia Commons. What is the typical policy regarding such duplications? Are both to be kept or should the Wikipedia version be deleted in preference to the Commons version? Jason Quinn (talk) 17:51, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

First, make sure the image should be on Commons, sometimes the licenses are incompatible and the transfer shouldn't have been made. If it is ok on Commons, make sure all of the en.wiki usages of the images point at the Commons. Then you can tag it with {{Db-f8}} and it will be deleted from en.wiki. MBisanz talk 18:50, 3 November 2009 (UTC)
Thank you. There are two more images "File:Henson-Willliam_02.jpg" and "File:Henson-Willliam_04.jpg" that have the same triple "l" mispelling of "William". Could you also move those to correct the spelling as you did before? Lastly, am I correct in assuming that given an "Image:filename.jpg" wikilink that the Wikipedia looks for a local file first and then if not found looks in the commons? unapproved bots: limited number of edits per (time period)?

Are unapproved bots (ie generic users) limited to making M edits per N period of time? I'm still developing my bot, posting to userspace, and it tries to make three edits rather quickly. The middle one is being "dropped", presumably on the mediawiki side, though the API returns "Success". tedder (talk) 05:17, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

In theory you should be able to make at least three edits a minute (there is a WP:BEANS throttle, but not that low), I doubt it is on the API side, you might check with User:MZMcBride in the #wikipedia-BAG IRC channel since he is rather skilled in walking people through coding. MBisanz talk 05:43, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. Maybe I'll print the results and try delaying the middle one by 30 seconds; the process fetches, processes, then writes out the data all at the end, so it could be hitting a filter. Otherwise I'll head over to irc. tedder (talk) 06:11, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

Deleted Image HZurich.jpg

I see that you had my image HZurich.jpg deleted from my article on Heather Zurich today. I'm wondering why it occurred and how to get the image back into the article. I followed all procedures (that I'm aware of) and yet it was deleted. I obtained permission for use of the image back in September. I tagged it properly. When the "undocumented permission" tag hit it last week, I followed the directions and had the permission email forwarded to the proper email as stated in the warning/tag. I even added a comment in the talk page for the image. I never heard anything back and today ... poof! ... the image was deleted. What more am I to do? Jrnhoops (talk) 23:13, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

Old AFD

Hi, earlier this year you closed this AFD as keep. But two users who voted keep (User:DuilioM and User:MacLot) were blocked as socks of a now long-time banned POV-pushing user. I know it's unusual to review AFDs months after its close, but considering the article has only had minor cosmetic changes since then and that the banned user has previously created problematic articles (such as Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pro-Italian Maltese), how would you have closed the AFD if the socks were discounted? Orphaned non-free image (File:TheDiffsLogo.jpg)

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:TheDiffsLogo.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Aspects (talk) 18:03, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

arbcom elections 2009

G'day M - I just read the signpost article about the upcoming elections, and had to giggle that it reported that the election process is not yet chosen! - Then I swung by the page where this is being discussed / voted on etc. and noticed that you were the last person to vote (at time of writing) - I thought I'd swing by here because in my book you might be a good candidate to poke someone suitable to close that discussion, and offer a suggestion for the way forward - someone really has to, because it's a little embarrassing that we're going to be taking nominations without any idea how we're going to vote for the candidates (which will sadly be lacking the depth of talent of this private muse, this year ;-) - hopefully you'll know what to do next.... :-) Privatemusings (talk) 01:33, 10 November 2009 (UTC)ps. you standing?

Arbitration case

How do I go about getting approval for presenting evidence larger than 100/1000? I'm estimating I will have roughly 3.5 times that in both diffs and words once I finish editing. I can't really cut it down much more than I have so far as effectively I'm making four cases; one for each editor and one as a group. I am making it readable and splitting it into well defined sections so there won't be a huge wall of text making for tl;dr. I still have to complete the 4th section and do final editing before it will be ready to post anyway. --Tothwolf (talk) 07:30, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

I'm sorry but the committee is quite firm on that limit. You would probably need to make a request for a motion on the /Workshop page to be excepted from the usual rules. MBisanz talk 07:32, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
It simply isn't going to be possible to meet to 100/1000 bit. If this were one individual it would be possible but there are 3 plus them as a group and this has been going on for quite some time with a lot of things documented. I remember reading on one of the documentation pages that the 100/1000 wasn't "firm" and was somewhat flexible. I'm really over my limit with this mess already and feel like I've been having to fend for myself for months so any assistance you can offer here would be greatly appreciated. --Tothwolf (talk) 07:43, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
The flexibility is that you can link to pages in your userspace that document more evidence that is over the limit. Hope that helps. MBisanz talk 02:47, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
I also asked on the Workshop talk page. I'm not sure how I would split up what I have into something on the evidence page and something in userspace. I'm still editing it right now though so I'm not quite ready to post it anyway. --Tothwolf (talk) 03:13, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

Need bot amendment, bot owner busy, what to do?

Hi. I thought to ask you in this somewhat more private forum for advice. :) Due to recent changes at WP:CP, we are in need of a change to User:Zorglbot. We asked User:Schutz, who runs it, for assistance on October 31st. (User talk:Schutz#Zorglbot: Expansion on the daily CP listings ) On November 2nd, Schutz said he would look into it soon. He's only edited once since then (a week later), but has evidently not had an opportunity. I left him a request for follow up on the 11th, and on the 12th I asked him if it would work better for him if I asked for assistance from somebody else. He has been somewhat active on French Wikipedia: [9]. (I will frequently leave him notes there when needing updates to Zorglbot or when Zorglbot runs into problems, and did notify him of this on the 31st.)

Is it dreadfully inappropriate for me to ask somebody else to help out with this? It doesn't seem to be a complex task (the transclusion of Template:Cppage to the daily CP listings Zorglbot creates), and we've been doing it manually, but it's been half a month, and if a bot can simply help out, well, that would be better. :) OTOH, I don't know if it complicates things too much to get another bot operator to add this to a page that Zorglbot creates. :/ I don't want to step on Schutz's toes. I appreciate what Zorglbot does for CP. I also don't want to badger him about stuff like this. Sigh. Your advice would be appreciated. --Moonriddengirl (talk)

From what you describe, it seems very trivial to find someone to code a bot to add that template to the pages created. Ideally Schutz would alter his bot to also perform that function, but from my experience working with other bot ops, it is easy to program such a task. You might ask User:Tizio, who operates the bot that does a similar function for image CSD if he could add your task to his bot's current activities. MBisanz talk 19:33, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
Oh, good idea! DumbBot already does some stuff at CP, so I've worked with Tizio before. Thanks very much. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:53, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the timely name change. I have a few questions. 1. How do powerusers edit Wikipedia? Assistance at Bc's talkpage

There is an editor attempting to interact with Betacommand at his talkpage, regarding some actions (tagging, it seems) by Bc on an article page. It seems that the other editors command of English is not what it might be, may not have read or understood the template at the top of Bc's talkpage, and is generally unfamiliar with Bc. I am familiar enough with Bc to know that hoping he will carefully, comprehensively and politely explain himself may not be sufficient. As one of Bc's mentors, I wonder if it would be in your remit to assist in the editors queries before Bc does. I note that you are busy in real life, so I am copying this to Hersfold also. Question

Hello MBisanz, I have a question. File:Joe Sanchez.jpg has been deleted within Wikipedia policy which is perfectly fine, however I have been told today that the copyright (not the subject in the image) holder sent the permission of usage to OTRS (which I believe may be backed up in work) about 8 days ago and has sent it once more today (24th). What happens after OTRS receives the permit? Will the image be undeleted and posted once more in the article of the subject by OTRS? Or what is the process here? I'm a little absent minded and normally absorbed in my writting in Wikipedia, therefore I was wondering if you could please answer me in my "talk page". Betacommand

Hi! As Betacommand's mentor, could you have a look at the conversation at User talk:Betacommand/20091101#Gorizont_.28newspaper.29_confirmation_links_were_removed as there seem to be some issues. It seems to me like User:Михаил Дмитриев is a newbie who made some mistakes in good faith while creating a new article (language problems and placing references in the wrong format) and Betacommand is handling this in a sub-optimal way. The newbie is making valid points, but Betacommand is being too dismissive of this in my mind, and may have made some poor choices, such as flooding the article in question with maintenance templates in a way that gives the impression of being retaliatory.

I don't think Betacommand's behaviour in this matter is uncivil, but it is a bit... passive-aggressive, maybe? I know that Betacommand has had problems with communication in the past and hope that you can help him to avoid such problems in the future. Such as Betacommand's situation is now, he needs to avoid communicating in a way that causes people to have an unnecessarily negative view of him. Draftydoor (talk) 21:01, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

Okay ... now we can finally come back to this issue. You added the policy tag to WP:Code of conduct a while back and I reverted, on the theory that discussion was needed. We've had a lot of discussion now on the general principle that some policy pages are not like other policy pages, and per the discussion at WP:VPP#Wikipedia administrative policy, I've just added the legal policy cat to Wikipedia:Privacy policy. I'm not taking any position now on WP:Code of conduct, other than the position that I don't plan to be involved with the evolution of the legal or procedural policy cats. It seems reasonable that if some important pages at meta get pointers, then others should, too, but I don't know which ones. (Watching) - Dank (push to talk) 15:12, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi, i've been informed by User:Beebarose that you have deleted copies she made of some articles in her own User space, and therefore I thought we might need to clarify their reason for you.. we're from the Arabic Wikipedia, and there are some translators working on a Pilot Project for Google to test it's new Google Translator's Toolkit, and this is by translating some of the English Wikipedia's articles into the Arabic one, and we've been making copies of our trnaslation input so we can have a constant version for the toolkit to process, and to compare with the output that will be held in the same Users' spaces at the Arabic Wikipedia to "wikify" them before publishing them, we have contacted several admins on both the Arabic & English wikipedia of this Project, and have made sure that it does not conflict with the CC nor the GFDL Licenses, and we will be deleting these input copies as soon as we're done working with them, my role here is to supervise the Translators' Userspaces in the english wikipedia, and if there's anything you'd like to know, please Contact me, but for the time being, what I ask for is not to Delete any articles from this User's space, or any other user that might put a sentence at the beginning of their article saying that this is a translation input. Thank you! Koraiem (talk) 00:36, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

You merged suspected assasin's article with the West Baltimore station article. Since then, the station article has stayed about the same but the merged part has been 100% deleted. This is in defiance of your AFD decision.
If the West Baltimore article expanded and changed, then I can see 100% removal as part of the general improvement process. However, it has not. Since the West Baltimore people are unhappy, I suggested that they go through deletion review. The alternative is to re-list the AFD. It is possible that the desired order is merge > keep > delete so that merging and then 100% reverting the merge is the last best choice. So how about suggesting DRV or re-list the AFD? Someone said that this is too bureaucratic. However, since when is the AFD process bureaucratic; it's fairly straightforward. Suomi Finland 2009 (talk) 00:51, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

Dear Mr. Matthew Bisanz,

I would like to request to you to reinstall the English Wikipedia – Site for the International Delphic Council (IDC). I have worked on the contents with new relevance. The organizations website is more relevance www.delphic.org where you can reach the Initiator. The idea of the initiator (International Delphic Council founded in 1994) is to revive the Delphic games but there have been some disloyal to rebel against, especially the Russians organizing International Delphi Committee (organized in 2003), they have use the counter subject “Committee” instead Council which is worldwide known. • Could you be kind enough to explain in simple language what is that the copyright holder or I have to do? Sould I delete the Source in the image and license, which are not working and which does not belong to the copyright holder, and then post the ticket number and have the copyright holder resend the permit? Help? Tony the Marine (talk) 22:53, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

The only thing she needs to do is send an email from her company's email system to OTRS stating what she already stated, and the image will be approved. Does that make sense?

It does make perfect sense, except that she doesn't work for any company. The source, which no longer uses the image and the copyright holder are not related. That is why I asked her to give us her permission. Tony the Marine (talk) 01:34, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

It appears we need some further information about the actual source of the image. File:Miguel-Poventud2.JPG is very low quality and tiny; it gives its source as a web page but that webpage seems to be using a number of low resolution images that probably don't actually belong to the person who created the site. What we really need to know is where this image first came from. This will help us to properly determine who is the current copyright holder. If you can get some more details on the image, I'd be happy to help you work out the copyright status. Shell babelfish 09:25, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

In the old days I would have sent Email

Subject: Reason prevailing

Hello -

Sorry you have been dragged into all of this. Regarding reason, I regret that as long as EEML! is being shrieked like WITCH! I shall be responding. In good faith I spent an inordinate amount of time responding to the evidence presented against me by individuals. I'm in my mid-50's with family health and other issues, I do not need to be defending my integrity against puerile Wiki onslaughts that take full advantage of ArbCom being content agnostic.

Then I find that anything and everything I have responded to apparently means nothing, as there is no indication ArbCom has listened to anything I have presented in my defense, instead they have crawled inside my head in the grossest assumption of bad faith with virtually no findings against me, yet proposing one-year topic or total bans.

You tell me what avenue I have for defending myself. When this started, I prepared an act of contrition to forward to ArbCom for their consideration when I felt the time was right. I have since deleted it, regretting I did not take a more forceful stand against my accusers.

ArbCom is fueling the problem with their guilty as charged assumption, as they have not looked for an understanding of the situation but only for bad-faith explanations for anything that can be potentially mapped from an Email to an on-Wiki article or editor. According to their logic, had Russavia been harassed in real life for some reason, coincidentally, EEML members would have been found to be the most "likely" perpetrators. In a real court, innocence is presumed and proof must be considered incontrovertible; on Wikipedia, guilty is actively sought and "likely" is good enough.

Done venting. No response required. No action being lobbied for. You are free to share this or not as you see fit. My respect for ArbCom goes down daily as the thoughtful answers provided to some of my election questions now appear to be lip service, or, worse, apply in all cases except my special case.

/Peters

Fair notice: I will consider responses from my detractors here harassment. I am only posting this on-Wiki so I can't be subject to more accusations of lobbying, etc. should it become known I made contact. Don't blame me for the atmosphere, I'm only responding.  PЄTЄRS VЄСRUМВАtalk  19:13, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

These photos are unique, not available anywhere else, and document a significant historic event.

User Bowei Huang/A1DF67

On December 15, User:Bowei Huang requested that his username be changed to User:A1DF67 because he wanted a more obscure name.[15] Since you were the admin who actioned that request I thought I'd address this to you.

Bowei Huang has been on a crusade to automate everything which, while commendable, has caused several problems because his method of doing so has caused numerous errors requiring multiple reversions in multiple articles. He first came to my notice when he attempted to automate the approximate population of Australia which resulted in, at the time, an easily confirmable error.[16] After I reverted that mess, he made other changes on different occasions, all of which were subsequently reverted.[17][18] After seeing several warnings on his talk page I was a little suspicious after his name change request. Despite his request for an obscure username, User:A1DF67 hasn't made a single edit.[19] Instead, he has continued editing under User:Bowei Huang.[20] making mistakes and not correcting them and conducting testing in articles, rather than a sandbox.[21][22][23]

Getting to the main reason for my post, what we now have is a user who has requested and been given a name change. The new name hasn't been used but now holds all of his past edit history and more importantly, numerous warnings, while the old username has been cleaned of warnings and has effectively been given a fresh start. There is no indication by either username that it is an alternative account of the other. I don't think I need to connect the dots. --AussieLegend (talk) 15:11, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

When Jan 1, 2010 rolled around this portal display went awry. I checked it on both my computers and it looks the same: some portlets display on the left with blank space on the right, some display across the whole screen, and then some display on the right with blank space on the left. I changed my screen settings and it doesn't help. I have not changed any of the portal's code, so one would think something with the new monthly content is breaking it, but I have no idea what. It displayed fine prior to that. Can you help? Thanks. RlevseTalk 14:46, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Image copyright

Hi Matthew,
since I've now twice (1 2) used your user page as an example, I just wanted to let you know that a number of images you have on your user page probably claim an incorrect copyright status (along with thousands of others). No need to do anything at this point, I'm not yet sure what we're going to need to do about that (if anything), just letting you know. Actually, I'd prefer if you kept them all up so that I could continue to use them as an example. :) Initial discussion is at User talk:Moonriddengirl#Commissioned work, if you're interested, but will probably move to WP:MCQ sooner or later.

Arbitration requests

With respect to this sentiment, the current heading makes it clear that the request is not specifically about the Chabad article. That could be addressed with some other heading, such as "Chabad-linked editors", etc. Bongomatic 09:49, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Blocking BoP

I think this was a bad block, MBisanz. I am aware of the user in RL, and was not aware of any bad behavior on the part of the previous account that would have warranted your actions. The user withdrew from the previous account, there was a significant span of time between the last account's final edit and the new one's.
Furthermore, the new account demonstrates a greater level of maturity. We are both aware of current admins who had previous accounts, and I can think of one rather famous one who's previous account had a list of blocks as long as my arm. Could you please explain your thinking and proof, please? I cannot wait long for an answer, as this is a very serious matter. - Arcayne (cast a spell) 04:21, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Well BoP had asked for it to go away quietly which is why I unblocked, so I'm not sure it is a good idea to go laying out everything on the wiki, which I've already sent to arbcom at their request. MBisanz talk 05:36, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Semi-protection request

Could you consider semi-protection for the article Pascal Bodjona? It's been vandalized by IPs several times—at first they were adding an unsourced allegation that he cheated at university, but more recently they've just been blanking most of the text. Most of the article was blanked back in August, and I didn't even notice until the other day—but right after I noticed and reverted, an IP showed up to blank the text again. If you don't want to semi-protect it, at least watchlist it. Everyking (talk) 00:00, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

I'm not 100% sure what you had against this other than the absence of an explicit claim of authorship. Neither am I sure what, if anything, I should be concluding from the fact that File:18songs2.jpg isn't tagged. True, that one does have the explicit claim of authorship but I don't like deleting things just because boxes aren't ticked. Angus McLellan (Talk) 01:56, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

May I also take this opportunity to grumble about File:100d 0384.jpg. Is CSD F11 really appropriate for "no freedom of panorama for 2d objects in India"? Isn't that what we have WP:PUF for? I've never looked at this category before so perhaps this is normal. But it does seem weird to me. Angus McLellan (Talk) 02:02, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
Stumped by File:Golfing queen.jpg as well. Maybe you should write a manual for stupid people like me? Angus McLellan (Talk) 02:35, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
Nah, I don't mind explaining things. I'm fairly certain the first file wasn't used in any pages so I was willing to be a bit strict in saying the box isn't ticked. For the second one I felt it wasn't just no freedom of panorama, but that it was meant as a copy of the billboard, and again it wasn't used in any pages, so I was willing to be stricter with my interpretation. For the third one, I grant it is perplexing, but when you look at the other uploads of the person Special:Contributions/Jessica_louise246, I believe there is a substantial question as to if they actually took the images and since it wasn't being used in any pages, again, I couldn't see a reason for retaining a marginal image. MBisanz talk 03:53, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
Those all make perfectly good sense to me now so many thanks for the explanations, Angus McLellan (Talk) 11:36, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Hello MBisanz! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. Merging accounts question

Hi, sorry to trouble you with trivial noise, but is it possible to merge an old account with your current one?

Note: The reason I ask is due to the trivial matter of lusting after a particularly nice service ribbon which I have enough edits for, but would need to merge my old (11-edits account) to have enough wiki-age.

Again, sorry for trivial question, but I am curious? Thanks. Proofreader77 (interact) 01:05, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

No, sorry, accounts can't be merged, but you could always just refer to the old account on your userpage and get the ribbon that way. I know Mike Halterman has something like 17,000 edits on his old account and just adds the total to his new one. MBisanz talk 01:42, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
Many thanks. I'm really lusting after that one-star purple ribbon. LoL

As long as there's not a LAW against counting the old account for a ribbon. Proofreader77 (interact) 01:49, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Note: People who remove invalid service awards

LoL I see someone just commented out that talk page display of a service award on your page. Apparently there IS a law against it. :-) Proofreader77 (interact) 02:26, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Comment

Is the OTRS permission for this image legitimate or not: [26]

I was just wondering. If it is, maybe it could be moved to Commons. But I don't know if the uploader is an Admin on wiki. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 01:10, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

It doesn't appear legit. The OTRS ticket is from 2007 and the image was uploaded in 2009, also the ticket is a rejected ticket for stating an unclear permissions. MBisanz talk 01:45, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
  • Could you place that image in a DR so I can make a comment? It will look bad if I do it since I don't have OTRS access unlike you. I look at who placed the OTRS ticket and it was not an Admin but the uploader here. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 02:39, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
