Account Creation Interface

You have been approved to use the Internal Account Creation Interface! Some important notes before you get started:

  1. Abuse of the interface is not tolerated, and access can be revoked by an interface admin at a moment's notice
  2. You should ask an administrator for the "accountcreator" usergroup, which overrides the 6 account creations/day limit. However, this usergroup too can be removed by any Wiki admin at a moment's notice if abused.

Now that you have read the generic warnings, go ahead and log into the interface and begin creating accounts, the interface is self explanatory, although there is one note: The "Request maintenence" button dosen't submit a bug report, it returns you to the "home" page with the account requests. A humble request

I'd like to ask you to help me out with implementing the Hawaiian language in the other Wikimedia projects, since I can't think of many other users who know or study Hawaiian and are active Wikipedians. Translation

Hi. I was wondering what E Ola Ke Alii Ke Akua translate to in Hawaiian. I inferred that it might be God Save the King since Akua=God and Alii=King. I don't know what the other phrases means of course and my knowledge of the language doesn't go pass guessing and inferring.

Also I notice this part of the song has 7 lines in Hawaiian and 8 line in English. Could there be translation errors or is?

Kauikeaouli

Spelling

I notice there is always different ways to write Hawaiian names. Like Liliuokalani could be Lili'uokalani, Liliu-o-kalani, Liliuo'kalani, Lili-u-o-ka-lani, and etc. How would Keawe Awe'ula-o-Kalani be written? The only other way is Keaweaweulaokalani, that I could find. And what is the proper way to okina the name Kaoanaeha and is Kealiiahonui correct or Keliiahonui? Can Hawaiian names be all jumbled up like Kualii could be Kualiilanipipililanioakaiakunuiakealuanuuokuiialiiikahalau? Also the a between names like Kiha-a-Piilani and Keawe-a-Heulu. I noticed it is practiced among alii aimokus and other aliis with their personal name than their father's or mother's. Was it how the ancients referr to these chiefs or is it more modern? Also does it matter on the importance of once's father to allow this as Kakuhihewa was never known as Kakuhihewa-a-Kaihikapu and his father, Kaihikapu-a-Manuia, was inconspicuos in comparison to him. Joining WikiProject Hawaii

E aloha mai ia ʻoe, e Kai. E mahalo nui for the nice message you left on my talk page. E kala mai, please forgive my Hawaiian. I am still struggling to grasp the basics of the language.

I would like to join WikiProject Hawaiʻi but my time is rather limited at the moment. I don’t mind, however, doing what I have been doing, which is correcting minor errors in English grammar on pages that I run across. Conversely, I would feel extremely uncomfortable making edits that would materially change the actual content on a page – and would only consider doing such a thing only after having discussed it with the project group, or whomever supervises the page in question, first.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, I’d be happy to join you guys if you don’t mind that my participation would be somewhat limited in scope.

And by the way, I really want to extend my compliments to all of you out there who have contributed to the Hawaii portion of Wikipedia. I can’t begin to tell you how very impressed I am with the volume and quality of material. It’s truly impressive! Ka-Ma-Iki (talk) 02:41, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

Ancient Names

Do you know the ancient name of each of the eight islands of Hawaii? Like Kauai's is Kamawaelualani. And do you know all the chief his name are affixed as a sobriquet to the island over which they ruled? Kauai = Kauai-a-Manokalanipo (Kauai of Manokalanipo), Oahu = Oahu-a-Lua and Oahu-a-Kakuhihewa, Hawaii = Hawaii-a-Keawe, Maui= Maui-a-Kama and `O Maui o na hono a`o Pi`ilani (O Maui of the many bay of Pi`ilani). Hawaii Ponoi

Do you know what was the other form of Hawaii Pono'i used by the Republic of Hawaii? The current one is the state and kingdoms anthem but the Republic changed the word king to people or something democratic in meaning. What does Wikolia Ka mehamalu Keawe nui Ka‘ahumanu a Ke kū anaō‘a mean?

I recognized the Keawenui, Kaahumanu, Kekuanaoa, and the Kamehamalu, but what is Wikolia. Victoria was also called Ka lehelani, Kiheahealani; what do those mean. Can Alexander be Hawaiianized to Alekanedero or Alekanetero? Which one is more accurate? Also do you think Matiao Kekuanaoa is actually Hawaiianized form of Matthew Kekuanaoa. Names

Keopuolani = the gathering of the clouds of the heavens Kauikeaouli = hanging in the blue sky Kamamalu = the shade of the lonely one Hoapili = close adhering companion Kaahumanu = the feather mantle Liliha = the fat of hogs Auhea = literally where, Kapiolani = the captive of heaven Kalakua = the way of the gods Kahekili = thunder Paalua = twice blind,

I sure they are right except for Liliha, Kapiolani, which I though was rainbow arch; and Kalakua. If liliha means the fat of hogs what does Kuini Liliha mean.

Is Asa Kaeo a Hawaiian name? Notice the S which isn't in the Hawaiian alphabet. But I think she lived prior to the foreigners. Sorry, I think she was granddaughter of Kalaniopuu.

I notice that sometimes the macron on top of a vowel actually affect the meaning of the word, in the Hawaiian language. I know Kukaniloko means (To Anchor the Cry From Within), then does Kūkaniloko, the name of an Oahu Queen, relates the war-god Kū?

I might be able to help you. Tell you what, can you come up with the hook at least? You can even add several different ones to the DYK nom. Oh, and I also wanted to comment on what you said about mixing sources. That's perfectly acceptable as long as you aren't making an argument (and it doesn't look like you are, you're just listing historical facts and events). FYI...Thrum's biography (see further reading section) on Kamakau is amazing. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble reading two important pages. Six things the current article needs to have added: 1) Expand the Lahainaluna school section. There's a lot of information about this time in his life and Dibble's influence, and it is very interesting how he crossed paths and worked closely with some of the more important people in Hawaiian history; 2) Add more information about his colorful character, much of which has been written about, i.e. he was highly intelligent, possessed a great memory, loved to debate, etc; 3) the supposed controversy regarding his early Protestantism and later Catholicism (and whether this influenced his academic research, see Obeyesekere for a critical view); 4) More details regarding his political career; 5) Kamakau's work on Native Hawaiian projects, such as the Olona (Touchardia latifolia) plant project; 6) The works section could be expanded with much more information about his research (such as describing the trilogy in more detail). There's also the extensive (exhaustive!) list provided by Thrum. It would also be helpful to include a current bibliography with modern ISBN's. Wonderful! The obvious hook would seem to be the accumulation of marine debris from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The point of drawing attention to Kamilo is to draw attention to this revolting garbage patch and its sheer size. This garbage patch is simply bombarding the Hawaiian islands. That is the point.

Mandarin

Hi. I saw in your user page that you want to learn Mandarin. I am a Canadian living in China. (I am the person who started the Kamilo Beach page). IF you are a beginner then I suggest Chinesepod and the following. If you are not a beginner then don't read on.

I don't suggest phrase books. I suggest writing three or four sentences out in Chinese (pinyin) then writing the English below it word for word to get a handle on the syntax. I don't suggest learning zillions of nouns. I suggest learning the following words and how to use them:

Portal:Hawaii/Did you know

BTW, if you enjoy DYK work, I've got about five in the hopper. Just say the word, and I'll get the ball rolling and turn them over to you. Or if you like, I can drop you a line when each article is created. On a separate note, as you may or may not know, User:Jonny-mt was maintaining Portal:Hawaii until the economic crisis forced him to take some time off (at least that's what I think he said). As you can imagine, I need some help maintaining the portal, and I've asked User:The Obento Musubi to lend a hand, but he's been off and on. So, now, I'm turning to you! :-) You don't actually have to do this task, but I figured I would ask to see if you are even interested. Here's the deal: Portal talk:Hawaii/Did you know lists 18 DYK's that have appeared on the Main Page. I want to move them to Portal:Hawaii/Did you know and replace the current DYK's that appear there, which are user-created DYK's that never went through the DYK process. But, I want the Portal DYK's to rotate on each reload, like Portal:California (you can look at their code to see how it is done). Just saw that you did some more work on the Portal in addition to the DYK rotation. Good work. Update: I wanted to let you know that I would like to bring both Niihau and Amaranthus brownii to GA soon. I'm not sure how much time you have to take a look at both of those articles, but we could submit a peer review for Niihau. I did that for Amaranthus brownii, and it was very helpful, but I still haven't finished addressing all of the issues. BTW, I made some comments on Talk:Plate lunch. Creating a wiki page for the word "hanai"

Is there a page that covers the cultural topic of "hanai"?

As far as I can tell, there is no extant wiki page for hanai, either under Category:Hawaiian_words_and_phrases (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Hawaiian_words_and_phrases) or elsewhere under topics related to Hawaiian culture. Moreover, I regret to say that the level of my Hawaiian language fluency is not sufficient enough to allow me to determine on my own whether there is a page on 'hanai' within the Hawaiian Language wiki portal: Ka papa kinohi ([1])

Reasons to create a page for hanai.

While reading the wiki page on Keopuolani ([2]), under the "Children" subheading the last sentence stood out: "She would break Hawaiian tradition of hanai and keep her daughter Nahienaena by her side." Because I am part Hawaiian and personally familiar with certain aspects of Hawaiian history and culture, I readily understood the full meaning behind the phrase "... tradition of hanai ..." as a specific form of adoption practiced by ancient Hawaiians.

There still may be a few families who have preserved this specific form of hanai, it has all but disappeared as a general practice. The word hanai, however, survives to this day and remains in wide use in the lexicon of the local vernacular. I am certain that you are well-aware, Kalathalan, that the deliberate use of the word hanai between locals is meant to express a unique notion of adoption, one that is different, with important distinctions, from the way adoption is practiced and perceived elsewhere, such as the form most common to the contiguous U.S. mainland states for example.

Further, it should be noted that the entire connotation of what is meant by the word hanai is not merely one of pure academic or anthropological interest but one that has important implications in the lives of some, today. One of these is in regard to the lawful conveyance of the title to land. Conflict can arise because the full implications of whathanai implies contains inconsistencies with the statutory regulations used to facilitate the proper transfer of real property between families members and non-blood hanai relatives.

Creating my first page.

Those reasons listed above seem sufficient enough to create a page (should none currently exist) but were I to decide to take on this task, I think it wise to mention that it would represent my first wiki page creation, and therefore, aside from the proscribed format and technical guidelines, I would like to ask what else is there that I should be aware of? For instance, is there someone currently working on Hawaiian cultural topics? It would be pointless to duplicate the same effort.

Still around?

Hello, not sure if you are still around on Wikipedia. I have been trying to work on the Hawaii-related articles but do not speak the language, just use dictionaries. One question I had for a long time was the name of the Huliheʻe Palace. It is usually translated as "turn, flee" which matches a dictionary meaning, but why would someone name a house that? If you have a chance, some more questions. I did a little bit on Pohukaina which sources say come from pohu ka ʻāina, but from Pukui I would think ka ʻāina pohu would mean "the calm land". What significance would the word order be?

The other issue is that we had a flurry of work on the 1840s era. The Kamehameha III motto is usually translated in the same words as used then, but it sounds dated to today's ears. In particular, "righteousness" nowdays is often not a complement - sounds a bit too puritanical. Modern translations I have heard give "pono" more a sense of "balance" or "moderation", although not Pukui. I seem to recall a "green" paraphrase somewhere as something like "the key to sustainability is balance". Or maybe something like "doing the right thing keeps the nation alive" rather than the literal mid 19th-century one. But of course would need sources and not original reseach. Any ideas? Mahalo. Mind helping me with some English to Hawaiian translations?

Hi there,

My name is Alohilani, and despite my Hawaiian name, being from Hawaii, and having family in Hawaii, I have very little knowledge of the Hawaiian language. And so while doing some good old Googling on advice for translating to Hawaiian, I came upon a page in which you were responding to a Wiktionary question in which someone needed help translating some phrases to Hawaiian... and so now I am writing to see if you would be interested in helping me translate some of my own phrases.

This is for a tattoo I've been planning for the past year. I've spent a good long time making sure that I've figured out exactly what I want on my body (considering its permanent and all), and I've finally figured it out! Except one small part: I would like to translate the phrases into Hawaiian, to honor my Hawaiian heritage that I love so much.

The phrases are: (1) I shall always love my sisters. (2) I will always remember my home. (3) I shall forever stand by my friends. (4) I will forever search for the truth.

Now obviously it doesn't have to be in that exact wording, because I understand the huge differences in grammar between languages. Lol, but if you do take this upon yourself, I would be extremely grateful! I'm still going to try on my own of course, but it never hurts to try what resources I find first :D

Hawaii edit-a-thon!

Hello. I'm interested in attempting to put together an edit-a-thon for Hawaiian cultural topics something during the Makahiki festival perhaps around the month of November. The hope is that our lackluster coverage of Hawaiian mythology could be improved with help from the Bishop Museum, Hawaii Pacific University, and the Honolulu public library.
