Velocity[edit]

Hi, in response to your comments on my talk page: 1. I have no idea why I removed the book cover with the ultimatum; I made the edit a month ago and it must've made sense to me at the time. I think that the cover seems to fit the article, so I really don't know what I was thinking. 2. I put the copyedit note up because it... well... needs copyediting. The syntax and grammar is bad, so I used a general copyediting tag. It's not so bad as to be unreadable, but it just isn't... good. Maybe I'm just picky because I'm an editor for my school's paper, but I would have to fix a lot before I'd run this. It would also need improvement before reaching featured article status. If I get time, I'll try to run through and copyedit it to show you what I mean.
Another note: The followed_by and preceded_by tags are supposed to apply to books in a series, rather than multiple works by an author. I noticed your edit to put the chronological works in, and wanted to let you know. There seems to be a misconception about this with most of the Dean Koontz works, but... that's how the {{Infobox_Book}} is supposed to work. So, for example, the Brother Odd books would use the preceded_by and followed_by tags, whereas Velocity would not. I'm not trying to single you out, because a lot of wiki-editors are confused about it - see the discussion here. -Elizabennet | talk 05:22, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

Subtitles are a common phenomenon in films and television broadcasts where the target audience speaks a language different from the one used in the film/broadcast. Subtitles are far less common in home videos. An image taken from a home video shows the technicalities of subtitling but not its real usage. Of course any film will do; I've deliberately chosen a rather obscure one so as not to cause any major copyright issues. <KF> 12:24, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You make a valid point, however, being a copyrighted work, as long a there is a free alternative, it's still not fair use, no matter how obscure the film is. For example, there are subtitled videos in the public domain. In addition, in English Wikipedia, it would be prudent, however not required, to select either a video where the character speaks English or the subtitles are in English. Also, selecting an image with a free licence and uploading it to the Wikimedia Commons allows it to be used on other Wikimedia projects.
It is for these reasons that I have replaced your current image in Subtitle (captioning) with a free one, but feel free to replace it with an image from the public domain or other free licence. Thank you and all the best. Taric25 16:59, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

While i've never read it, i do know that WP:Google test is a rdr to a relevant article. My acquaintance with it comes from seeing folks cite them on AfD, and eventually figuring out how to take the 1000-hit limit into account.

  1. searched for pages that had both Matt followed immediately by Beaumont, and E similarly followed by A followed by Novel
  2. lk'd to page 10 (hits 91 - 100) of results, which always has "90" near the end of its URL,
  3. modifed the 90 (in this case, IIRC, to 190, since the first page had indicated over 200 hits by so little that i felt sure there'd be less than 190 unique -- but i think 990 always works, except for making me feel a bit silly)
  4. noted that a bar near the upper right corner of the resulting page said
    Results 91 - 100 of about 128 for "Matt Beaumont" "E: A Novel"
  5. discarded everything before "100", since it carries no information not implied by the rest.
My interpretation is that
the "about" number on the 1-10 page is an estimate, whose basis i can only guess at;
the "about" number on the last page (991-1000, but earlier if the total is less) is the actual number my server received;
the number before "of about" is the number among that final "about" number that were not virtually identical.
In this case, i infer that Google has only crawled something like 100 pages that might be independent of each other and refer to him. (I note that there may be pages that refer to books among his 5, without mentioning E..., tho my experience didn't make me feel it was important to rule that out.)
My experiences of WP's distributed server telling me that the new page i just saved doesn't exist invite me to believe that w/ Google (presumably a much larger network than WP), no single server knows about all of the recently crawled sites that have become new potential hits -- nor all of the (probably smaller) proportion of old hits that have ceased to contain the data that made them hits before. That would help explain the word "about", and the frequent variation in GTest results when the test is repeated. I suppose servers near those that handle a search request are given priority to upgrade their knowledge of relevant hits, in the expectation that they are more likely to fulfill a request for the next page of hits, or be able to pass their info to a nearby server that is doing so.

Hi, I uploaded that image almost four (four!) years ago, at a time when there were no tags in Wikipedia: Claiming "fair use" was all that was needed at the time. I said so on the image description page:
{{Unverified}} indeed: Taken by an unknown photographer somewhere in Vienna, Austria, and lifted [by me] from an unknown web site advertising the establishment pictured, a wine tavern on the outskirts of the city.

If you take the image, it won't perhaps still be free as you mention, but at least we won't be ripping off the hard work of someone else who took the time to take the picture. If you read the text prior to the table, which it seems you edited but did not comprehend, it makes perfect sense. Friday classes run from 8:00 to 12:31, with four 62 minute classes. They start at a pretty hour of 8:00, with 3 minute breaks in between classes, and an 8 minute break between 2nd and 3rd. Of the thousands of schools in the world that have 'arbitrary' start times, I'm sure you can find a resource that explicitly outlines it for you. Hi, so why did you ask me to provide a fair use rationale in the first place if you have known all along that this image cannot be used? ("Please remove this template if a rationale is provided. Note that boilerplate fair use templates do not by themselves constitute a sufficient explanation as to why an image is permitted.") Honestly, I'm quite frustrated with that kind of procedure, which I've encountered now several times, as I have better things to do than compose pointless rationales. If, for whatever reason, copyright or otherwise, you do not want any Di Stefano image in his article (I see you have removed and deleted the other one as well, no idea why, you might have written a rationale yourself instead), why not say so right from the start?
I am not a lawyer, and certainly no U.S. or Italian lawyer, and my naivety in this field led me to believe that all that was needed was a sentence like "He also sang Italian folk songs" in the article to be able to use the image after all. All the best, <KF> 20:30, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

I'd be interested to learn what the regular contributors to the Giuseppe Di Stefano article (but also others, if they happen to pass by) think about the image(s) in this article. Am I wrong in assuming that it is the ultimate goal to have no Di Stefano image?

When I looked at the article some time ago there were three, one of them on stage with Maria Callas (if I remember correctly). Now they are all gone (see also Image talk:Di Stefano.JPG). As I see it, there are only three ways of procuring a free image:

(1) travel to wherever he lives and take his picture (how is he, by the way?)—wouldn't really show him at the height of his career, would it?
(2) wait until an ageing opera buff and amateur photographer turns Wikipedian and presents us with a photo they took of Di Stefano after a performance back in, say, 1958
(3) ask Di Stefano to release an image of himself into the public domain.

Hi, and thanks for tagging Image:Giant Manta.JPG and stating that "this image was uploaded under a fair use rationale, but may fail Wikipedia's first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a free image might reasonably be found or created that adequately provides the same information". However, the image was not uploaded under a fair use rationale; it was uploaded (by me, as it happens) as a public domain image ineligible for copyright.

You have added to that tag one that gives false information, threatens the image with deletion within a week and at the same time must not be removed ("Do not remove this tag."). You have not notified the uploader (me again) ("After adding this tag, please notify the uploader").

Sorry for not notifying you. I usually do, but I recently loaded a script into my js file to simplify image tagging, and it apparently does not always notify the uploader.
The image was incorrectly tagged as public domain. I'm still not sure why you felt it was public domain. It is quite obviously an original work of art and therefore protected by copyright.
Rather than tag it as a copyvio, which would have resulted in speedy deletion, I wanted to give the uploader a chance to provide a fair use rationale if I was missing something. I assumed the js script had notified you, and I apologize again for that oversight.
Unfortunately, I can't draw either. Hopefully somebody will visit an aquarium and get us a picture to illustrate this article. But we can't use somebody else's art without permission.

Visit an aquarium? The whole point of the image is to illustrate the story/legend, not to show what a giant manta really looks like. It took me some time to find what I thought was the right tag—Template:PD suggested "ineligible" for "trivial work", and that's what I used.
I've seen so many book covers tagged for deletion recently that I (wisely, I thought) refrained from uploading one for The Black Pearl. I've also taken the trouble to ask for permission to use images in Wikipedia, and got the permission, only to see the image deleted nevertheless because the author did not want it to be used commercially. (So I'm not going to ask Rebekah (South Washington County Schools) for permission—not even sure if it is her drawing.) Thanks, I now understand your reasoning. I think "trivial work" refers to something like a chronological list of US presidents or career leaders in goals scored in Seria A. There's no creativity or "authorship" there. Somebody's drawing is almost never going to qualify as trivial. You should be able to use a book cover to illustrate a story article, as long as you include a fair use tag and fair use rationale. Album covers are generally used to illustrate the album article. Just don't use the book cover to illustrate an article on the author, because that's not considered fair use.

But don't give up. There are people who browse through the photos on Flikr looking for suitable photos for WP. Apparently, Flikr has an option for uploaders there to select the GFDL license or public domain. And if the uploader selects a more restrictive license, you can ask them to switch to a less restrictive one. I haven't done it myself, but there must be a page on it somewhere around here, as it seems to be a great source of usable images to illustrate WP articles.

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of films by gory death scene (3rd nomination)[edit]

It seems from your note on my talk page that you think my close of this AfD was improper, incorrect, or unjustified. Or at least that you disagree with it. So let me address that first. There is a range of opinion on how to close AfDs. I was already an admin when AfD was still VfD (votes for deletion) so perhaps I tend to treat it a bit more like a vote than some do. But it is my strong impression that the introductory statements about how this is (not a vote) are a bit overstated. Their intent is to encourage people to discuss, not just give opinions/votes with no reasoning, and this is IMO a Good Thing. But when the discussion is being closed, numbers do count, IMO. More precisely I normally evaluate "weight of numbers" and "weight of arguments. If there is no reasonable policy based argument on one side or another I tend to discount that side altogether. People who express no rationale, or give a reason with no basis in wikipedia policy I also tend to discount. I also discount obvious sockpuppets, and sometimes anon editors. If the reasons on one side are overwhelmingly strong, then that side might prevail even against the numbers. But usually, after discounting views that seem invalid, I do count up those on each side, and am guided by the totals (adjusted for any views i am discounting). Normally i won't delete unless the non-discounted views are at least 2:1 for delete, and I won't close as "keep" unless there are more non-discounted people who opine keep than delete. But those are rules of thumb, not hard and fast laws. That is why I wrote of an "numerical consensus" but also of "policy-based reasons". If you think thst any of that makes for an improper AfD closer, report the matter on WP:ANI or WP:DRV or at WP:RFC. I'll listen to what is said.

Now to projectification. This is a large and nasty case, much bigger than the usual case where a deleted article is moved to userspace for rewriting or sourcing. There are several issues here:

  1. an objective or at least clearer definition of "Gory"
  2. Sourcing that the individual films fit that new definition
  3. Addressing the contention that gathering such films together is OR (Synthesis)
  4. Addressing the question about the encyclopedic nature of such a list, even if sourced
  5. Reasonable procedures to avoid this being n unmaintained nd unmaintainable list
  6. review of the rewritten article before it is moved back to article space

I strongly suspect that this is too big a job for a single editor, and i note that .--Kizor also seems interested.

I don't think that I should undelete and projectify this without some sort of framework in place, or at least some sort of plan, on how to handle those issues, and preferably a commitment to that plan from multiple editor. It is IMO up to those who want this projectified to create that framework before I fill it with the undeleted article. In particular, i would like some commitment to not moving this back to mainspace without some sort of review, and to som,e sort of rough timeline.

You may think that this is unreasonable. Perhaps it is, although i don't think so. Note that I have no veto power, any of the 1,200 or so other admins can undelete, although many would want to check with the deleting admin. Such requests can also be fast-tracked at DRV. So if you disagree, you can go elsewhere. Or you can discuss the matter with me -- i am willing to listen and perhaps adjust my requirements. What I don't think i would do is to simply undelete and projectify with no arrangements at all except a request. That is why I very carefully said in my closer's notes "drop me a note and we can discuss it" not "drop me a note and I'll do it". Thanks for starting this discussion. Thanks for your response. You are correct that the guidelines for deletion, and for closing deletion discussions, are more than a trifle vague. In some ways I wish this wasn't so, and i have campaigned for changes a time or two -- some have been made over the years. The problem is that each of the hard and fast specific proposals i have seen have, at least in my opnion, some serious flaws that might actually make things worse. If you have some suggestions for a better way, I'll at least be glad to listen, and might even charge a windmill or two if you convince me. That is really aside from the point here. But I surely do not think that all current wikipedia policy is Holy Writ. (Indeed i'm soemthing of a dissident in particular areas.)
Thanks for making it clear that your objections are to current policy, not to my implemntation of it in this case. So many people can't draw the distinction, and sometimes judgement calls are a bit over into the grey zone. I try not to do that, but no one is perfect. I should add that if you did think my close was wrong, i wouldn't be upset if you appealed. I make mistakes as often as the next guy, and correcting such admin errros is exactly what DRV, ANI and other such fora are supposed to be for.

Inaction cannot really be a precedent -- that there are other similar lists that no one has nominated for deletion doesn't mean that they wouldn't be deleted if nomianted. Now if one such list is nomianed and then kept, then that should be a precedent for keeping other simialr lists, and IME it is often taken as such. but non-action proves nothing. (if the existiance of other such lists is a reason for retention, then none of them can ever be deleted except in a single mass AfD or by edict from above.)
Now as to projectification. I am not implacably oppsoed to it. In fact i am not in principle opposed to it at all. But I don't want to undelete only to find that a page which there was consensus to delte (however misguided the consensus may have been) sits forever in project space, or is moved back into mainspace with only a few minor changes for a rerun of the last debate. I have had a few bad experiences in the past with userfying deleted articles (as wella s several good ones) and I have learned the hard way that once I undelete, I have no further control over the matter. That is why i want someith like a plan on how to improve/change the page so it does have a hope of surviving a future AfD before undeleting. I am quite willign to be flexable about the details, and willing to work with you an any other intested editors on the plan, but I would like something that is at least a moral commitment (I realize it would not really be enforcable). Strict interpretation of Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria[edit]

In the image deletion process, the closing admin makes a call on the significance of the image in the article based on the discussion AND his past experience with similar situations. Although each IFD discussion has to be evaluated on its own merit, it also has to be looked at from the point of view of will my decision survive a deletion review challenge.

No one decides whether a source is given or not. A source for an image has to be given. This applies to free and non-free content.

The Toni Sailer article is not better off without an image. Most any article is better with an image, but the image has to meet Wikipedia policies in order to be used. your two images[edit]

Hi KF, sorry to have tagged another image without answering your question.... I was in the middle of a mass-inspecting and tagging of a bunch of old images. As for the demonstrations one you could definitely make an argument for it, I just think the picture really isn't adding anything beyond what can be described in text. Just reading about a demonstration, that's about what I would have expected. The picture isn't super impressive along the lines of WOW, there's a TON of people protesting, so I'm not exactly sure what it's adding to the article. The second one I wasn't sure what function it was serving basically. Does that building still exist? Why do we need the picture in the article? I tagged it as needing a rationale, which was more of a request for information than anything. (Obviously I tagged it because I thought it was at least a questionable use, but I don't know enough about the article at this point to make a judgment.)
