Alt text[edit]

When you update logos as at WLMT, please don't remove the alt text if present. It's there to provide a description of the logo to blind and visually impaired people. Do feel free to update it as needed. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 23:05, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You did well, Junebug3000, later, I wanted to rebrand channels as well. BMarGlines (talk) 18:48, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Large number of CW logo changes[edit]

Hello, I've reverted the significant number of changes you've made recently to CW affiliate station logos, in which it appears you've replaced the actual logos with what looks to be hand-drawn vector art image of your own. This is problematic for a number of reasons. First, they don't appear to be the actual logos. However, even if they were, it appears you mass uploaded them under a CC-0 PD license. Now, if these are in fact your own original works, you're welcome to do that, but that would mean they're inappropriate for inclusion in the article (we should not be replacing the official logo with fanart). If they are not your original works, that's extremely problematic as you would not have the authority to release them under CC-0 PD without approval from the rightsholders, and this represents some pretty significant violations of our licensing policies. There is no indication that Sinclair Media has released any of the CW logos under such a license. And if you are working for, or represent Sinclair media, without having disclosed that COI, that's extremely concerning as well. So can you 1) please agree to stop uploading these replacement logos, and 2) clarify whether you are editing on behalf of Sinclair Media? (Please see WP:COI for more information on conflicts of interest). Thank you. SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 20:50, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Swatjester: You might want to look at @BMarGlines:; they have been uploading CW logos in the same manner. Both these users would want to have a talk with @Sammi Brie:. Mvcg66b3r (talk) 20:56, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Seems a little suspicious. SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 21:06, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
These are not my work. I get them from logopedia wiki. I didn't know most of these logos were fake. Although I did notice the logo change for KVCW that was posted by BMarGlines was fake at first until it was changed recently. My apologies. I get confused what license or author I choose for a new logo. So yes, I do not represent Sinclair or any other Station group. I create this account a few week because I thought doing these edits would be fun and productive for me. I was pretty much new at doing this and I took inspiration from BMarGlines and went along with it. Again apologies. Junebug3000 (talk) 01:20, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK yeah, there's really two main lessons to keep in mind here for the future. First, only the rightsholder (which is usually the creator) can license a work under CC-0. If you found these images on another Wiki, that means you're probably not the rightsholder/author, and thus cannot modify the license or release the work under other licenses. Unless they were already released under CC-0 in the first place, and you can provide a source to verify that licensing release, these logos cannot be uploaded to Commons under CC-0. Second, the licensing and inclusion criteria are different here on en.wiki than they are on Commons, as the two sites have different goals. On Commons, pretty much anything can be uploaded as long as it's freely licensed, and there's no guarantee that the content will ever be useful or included on a Wikipedia article -- the value in Commons is acting as a repository. In contrast, on en.wiki, we do not have the same strict requirements that work be freely licensed, and we allow some non-free content; but we also require that said content actually be used towards an article: we're not a repository, we're an encyclopedia. What this means is that even if the logopedia logos were able to be uploaded to Commons, they are not suitable for use on the en.wiki articles, because they aren't the actual logos in use by these stations. Most of them are missing the word "The" from the CW logo, for instance, and the color scheme is different. It would be misleading for our readers to put up something that is tantamount to fanart, so prominently placed in an infobox and with no indication it's not official. However, here on en.wiki we actually have some policies that allow us to use the official logos on articles, even if those images are non-free. (See Wikipedia:Logos and non-free content.) It would be preferable for those images to used in this case. So finally I'd recommend you take some time to go back through Commons and request deletion of the images you uploaded there due to their inaccurate licensing status. So TL;DR, in summary: don't upload stuff to Commons that isn't freely licensed; you can't license things unless you're the rights holder; and non-free logos *can* be used on en.wiki (but not Commons) with the appropriate templates. Hope that all helps. SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 16:21, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
