Locked Juan Cole Article[edit]

Being a new user, I am not familiar with the WP chain of command or process of appeal. I believe you are a higher up administrator. If you are not, then please put me in contact with someone who is.

This is not a matter of taking sides but for the good of the WP community. The following comment gives you the flavor of what is going on in a nutshell. You have visited the site, so you have some familiarity with the problem.

"Stub it and then block the stub. The damage is a continuing damage as new readers come to the site. In fact each day the damage progresses. It's just a matter of time until a national or international media picks up the news. Like they did the Cuba article. I can see the bylline. "NeoKon Likudniks hijack Juan Cole WP article and get it locked against balancing edits. Tar him as anti-semite b/c of his forceful and effective criticism of repressive Israeli occupation of Palestinians and American heavy handed Iraq occupation. They are also concerned about his moderating stance toward the Iran war stampede." Take Care!--Will314159 16:32, 23 May 2006 (UTC)" The problem is the article is locked in a prejudical mode, no consensus can be achieved, yet the administrator in charge, who won't identify himself, won't stub the protected article and leaves the offending article up. By the way, I see your technical skill are awesome. I am using the signature icon at the top or the four tildes but my name is not coming up as a blue link. I see in the edit mode a complicated way of doing it using more brackets a vertical bar "USER" and a colon. Is there a simpler way. I usually use Firefox or opera? is that the problem. Take Care!--Will314159 18:22, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

for you interest it appears there is a consensus for some action i've copied this discussion Some pages on controversial subjects, like Talk:Evolution, explicitly send people elsewhere to discuss the topic rather than the article, perhaps that's a good idea here. Personally, I'm staying out of editing the article itself; I've just dropped by to put out enough of the flames that this article gets unlocked and editing proceeds as normal. I do agree that it seems like there is a consensus on Sandbox/1, so perhaps a couple of the regular participants should ask an admin to unlock the pages. --William Pietri 23:38, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Okay, maybe we should discuss the topic elsewhere. As for the apparent consensus on sandbox/1, I really don't know how to ask an admin to change the damn page finally. It's like we're all sitting at the dinner table looking at each other, waiting for someone to start eating. Greg Kuperberg 23:44, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

It seems the discussion went off topic in this section. I unprotected Juan Cole/sandbox/1. ←Humus sapiens ну? 23:49, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Great, thanks. But what I meant by "the damn page" was not sandbox/1, but the actual Juan Cole page, the one that was locked weeks ago. Almost everyone here agrees that sandbox/1 should or could replace it, but we plebes cannot do it. Greg Kuperberg 23:57, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

I thought William was an administrator but if he's not and if Humus is not willing to take the action why not put a request on SlimV's talk page to pull down what's there for the Juan Article and put up Sandbox1 take CAre!--Will314159 00:50, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

i've copied some of this discussion and put it on SlimVls talk page and I"ll also do it on some other admins that have showed an interest on this page. Take Care!--Will314159 01:00, 26 May 2006 (UTC) [edit]

So what's the deal?

It appears there was consensus to replace the protected page with the stripped down sandbox page but keep it protected. That hasn't happened yet. It's also not clear what sandbox page new additions should be made to. Can anyone clarify whether we are moving forward here or not? Thanks.--csloat 22:33, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Edits to the Alizee article[edit]

Hi. Sorry for the late reply. I was on the last days of my vacation and did not come online. Sorry, again. By the way, merging of references with the external links looks nice. I shrunk the Wikiquotes template a little bit, to reduce overlap between the references and the template.

And as for the images (not the gallery images), I changed the licensing tag to {{promophoto}}, which more or less covers he grounds for fair use. The images also say that they are being used non-commercially. I feel this validates their use. What other justification can be added? The scan of the letter, as stated, is anyway ineligible for copyright. As for the gallery images, as I had already said, I am neither for nor against. But it is true that they do not add to any information in the article. So that might justify their getting the axe :). Feel free to remove them. I fully endorse it.

For the awards, it is okay as of now, I'm not reverting it. But if any descriptive text needs to be added to the table, only one row would get longer than the rest. Thus, for only one row or two, the entire table would eat into the space for the paragraph. What I am suggesting can be observed to some extent on the NRJ award line. Thats why I was saying a bullted list would be better, as such tidbits of information can be added without bothering about how it gels with other text (unless, may be, a 2-column layout for the "Critical response" section, with the second column reserved for the awards table. Not sure how it would look though, didn't try out).

And yes, once the image issue gets sorted out, we should go for an FA nomination. Though it more likely than not will fail, we will get an idea of what needs to be worked upon. Also the third album, when gets out of the studio, will stir up the press and the Career/Future sections could be updated properly, and entire article may be re-organized, being backed up with publications as references. Then we may go in for a second FA nom. --soUmyaSch 09:30, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No problem ;) I hope you had a nice holiday! I'll have a look at the images later today and see what I can think of for the fair use rationale. jacoplane 12:20, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. --soUmyaSch 13:40, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Removing votes.[edit]

If you would look at my userpage, I am on Wikibreak and make occasional edits under a 207.112.* IP. This is no reason to remove my vote. I am not an imposter.

I can't log in without my Wikibreak script kicking in and logging me out. I had to edit my monobook from a text-only browser just so i could log in and re-vote. Next time, please look at the ample amount of evidence in front of you that proves my identity. Thank you. — Nathan (talk) 22:15, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sure next time I will know that you've got a customized wikibreak message, all I saw was an IP voting in your name and I didn't notice the message on your userpage. I just wanted to make sure it was you. jacoplane 22:33, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I know. I assume good faith but..please check first. I was/am on Wikibreak, deliberately preventing myself from logging in. Thanks. :) — Nathan (talk) 03:13, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ruud Gullit[edit]

Hi Jacoplane -Thank you for your kind msg. Re: Ruud Gullit I wanted to add the period where he as coach of thr club Feyenoord to the table below which currently show him as coach of Chelsea and Newcastle. I thought I had copied the same format but I guess I ddi something wrong. I don't know if that makes it clearer!! (Beau Chandler 22:47, 24 May 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Alizee FAC[edit]

Hi. The lack of enough text has been a problem that has been bugging me for a long time. One obvious thing that has come to me is to split up the Career section into two parts — one which describes her albums, and the other describing her TV appearances, stage performances and chartity shows. Also just a single line mention of her charity work seems to be too less. All the Les Enfoirés shows need to be covered a bit more, maybe listing alongwith all the other performers.

And for the album sub-section, I feel individual mention (as has been given to Moi Lolita and L'Alize) of all songs, at least the released singles and the hit songs, is necessary. And for the performance section, the more that can be covered the better :-) But care should be taken not to turn it into a never-ending list nor should it be filled up with barely-necessary info like which costume she wore. Her tour concerts can also be given prominenece in this section. And for this we need to find as many reports of her concerts as we may find.

But still, to get more material, we need the media to be stirred up, which can only happen when the third album is out. It will put the media not only to cover the new album, but the past two will also be drawn-out to make comparisons. They will come in handy.

And the audio samples can be kept as a floating div in the prose. (See Kylie Minogue, Mariah Carey). And when the article is expanded, a few of the gallery images (or some other, if better images are found) might be scattered among the text - otherwise, a long page of text gets monotonous :).

And lastly (or firstly, I dunno), the lead needs to be tackled. May be I will start working on it. But I still would suggest a FA nom, just to make sure we are thinking on the right path. Regards, --soUmyaSch 05:04, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

From Wikipedia:Featured Music Project, an article may cover musical style by including, where necessary, information on instrumentation, vocalization and production, and comparing and contrasting the performers with their peers; it may cover influences by including appropriately sourced information on the performers' stylistic development and relation to other performers; and it may cover legacy by including appropriately sourced information on performers that have been influenced by the topic of the article. This point needs some attention in the article, IMO. What say? --soUmyaSch 07:21, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hey I have started incorporating the changes I said I intend to. Could you please comment on them? Thanks in advance. --soUmyaSch 19:15, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, I'll comment on the talk page once you've finished your changes and I've had some time to think about them ;) jacoplane 19:19, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Taking lead from your phrasing, I updated the sentence. What do you think now? --soUmyaSch 05:45, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, any help is more than appreciated. --soUmyaSch 01:05, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, go ahead. I will be more than happy to spectate :-). One thing, I saw that you moved the second para from the lead into bio. But I kept that in the lead itself as WP:LEAD says the lead should summarize the entire article. --soUmyaSch 10:56, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, didn't see your reply for the lead section. But in many FA discussions I have seen this issue was pointed out. --soUmyaSch 11:03, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I think we should do a self review of how much the article corresponds to the guidelines at WP:FMP. What say? --soUmyaSch 11:23, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, this is what I had in mind, but you have executed it more beautifully that I could ever have. I have already added it to my watchlist and subscribed to its history on my rss reader. And your userpage does look very neat and organized. I like that. I should also go about cleaning up the mess that is referred to as my userpage. :-) --soUmyaSch 14:53, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your prod[edit]

I have removed the {{prod}} tag from Wikipedia:WikiProject Computer and video games/Version 1.0 articles, which you proposed for deletion, because the page you proposed for deletion was not an article. If you still feel the page should be deleted, please don't add the {{prod}} template back to it, as proposed deletion is only for articles. Instead, consider using WP:MFD for this page. HTML Hacks[edit]

Hey, can't we include <a>...</a> tags in the article to make a link? I was trying to shorten the awards table in the Alizée article, by keeping only the award name in the table and moving descriptive text (such as "best newcomer award") to a tooltip. But wiki software converted did not interpret <a>...</a> as html tags and converted < to &lt; and > to &gt;, thereby preventing browsers from interpreting them as html tags. Is there a way out? --soUmyaSch 11:26, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sure you can add her to WP:FMP - it looks like a pretty good article overall. Thank you for the encouraging words and help regarding the Unification Church Page. KI seems determined not to allow me to make any edits on the any of the UC pages (Divine Principle, Sun Myung Moon.) I even made a few minor edits and he reverted them again. He called them "nonsense." I tried to tone down my edits. I have about 20 years of experience dealing with the Unification Church and I was one of their teachers for about 10 years. I have much to share. I really don't have time to fight with KI. I just feel sorry for some school children doing reports and not getting the whole story. Football squad templates[edit]

Hi Jacoplane,

Just a quick note to say that I don't agree with the use of edit buttons on Football squad templates because they attract vandals, and edits on these can affect 40 or so articles. Otherwise, your work on these templates has been really first rate. Well done.

 SLUMGUM  yap  stalk  21:11, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm glad you agree. After a quick check... it seems that the earliest Japanese templates were created when the English ones still had an edit button. I'll revert your edit edits when I get the chance, unless you get there first. Many thanks.

Bond taglines[edit]

Not sure I can make an article out of them, not like we were able to for List of James Bond title references (which is technically incomplete and needs additional sources). Most of them are simply "James Bond is back" and I don't recall there even being one for the past 3 films. The more memorable ones: "It's the biggest, it's the best, it's Bond and b-e-y-o-n-d" (The Spy Who Loved Me), "Outer space now belongs to 007" (Moonraker), "Look Up! Look Down! Look Out! Here Comes The Biggest Bond Of All!" (Thunderball - very apt too), "Far up! Far out! Far more!" (OHMSS). "No limits. No fears. No substitutes." (GoldenEye) K1Bond007 01:46, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr pics[edit]

Yes, it's always best to double check with Flickr, especially with professional-looking shots, as they have no checks on their images, and don't remove them until they get a takedown notice from the copyright holder. My rule of thumb is if the EXIF metadata (camera model etc.) is still present. Thanks, ed g2stalk 20:49, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Customrobods.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Vic Vipr 12:01, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Left Behind[edit]

Jacoplane,

I have tried repeatedly to work out an acceptable description of the game on the Discussion board. I tried to do so before the thing was blocked, I have tried afterwards. I think you will see that the persons advocating the status quo entry have no interest in discussion and are behaving in a most uncivil manner.

Is there any hope of unfreezing the game and deleting the comment about Left Behind endorsing genocide? And if we do, how do we prevent his unfounded charge from being added again and again?

Thanks for your assistance. Layman 21:20, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
