Stub sorting question

Hi Grutness, I went to file a new stub in Category:Art museums and galleries stubs but then this edit of yours seemed to propose it for deletion or renaming back in November. Not sure what the best course of action, i.e. where to place this is. Thanks! StarM 00:57, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Not sure why that wasn't renamed... it seems to have been removed from SFD and listed as "rename", but that never happened. It makes no difference anyway, the template is not being changed, so it can still be marked with that, If the category is renamed the article will automatically be shifted to the new title. New Zealand rivers

Sorry, didn't mean to make a huge amount of extra work for y'all, but I saw the redlinks and thought it was about time I start filling them. Tell me, does the LINZ give out nice breakdowns of rivers and landforms by province? If so, I can create lists out of that, and basically re-stub what's there using AWB. Sorry to be dense, but it's late and I'm falling asleep in my chair. Grutness, there is no information which tells you which province the rivers are in. Can't they be created without a stub tag for now and then sorted later as they are developed and organized by province? The LINZ database has its own problems (it uses a different system to the official regions). As to the main NewZealand-geo-stub - no, it's not a problem. it was simply a shock seeing all the rivers arrive there. It's one of the categories I check and empty daily - there are normally 24 stubs in there which can't be divided up by region - sometimes there are one or two new stubs in there to sort. The addition of the rivers suddenly added 130 more. WPNZ is working quite quickly on sorting the rivers down, though, so there;'s no problem with them staying in there for now at all - probably far better than creating a new temporary category for them.. Wikipedia is primarily for readers, not for editors, I think those templates badly distract from content, and in here the common base of those templates, {{SouthAm-geo-stub}}, should be used instead. You can reply here. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 16:31, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

It's standard practice to multi-stub in that way. SouthAm-geo-stub is no longer used - it is on no articles whatsoever and redirects (or more precisely upmerges) to the base geography stubs category so that anything which does get marked with it can quickly be sorted using more appropriate stub types (the same is done with a couple of other deprecated stub templates). Yes, wikipedia is primarily for readers, but stub templates serve the other part of Wikipedia - editors - the part without which articles won't expand beyond stub level. Yes it looks ugly - that's half the point. The uglier it looks, the more likely it is that someone will actually expand it. And the most likely people to expand it are those working on articles about the geography of those countries, which is why that's the best place to categorise this article. I do. On all major edits, and on all minor edits that are not simply stub-sorting. With stub sorting, edit summaries cut the amount of work I'm able to do by about 85% (I've timed it to find out), and I feel it's more important for WP to sort the stubs than to say that I'm sorting the stubs. As I said, I timed it, and that is what I found. I was surprised mysefl - I had thought it would cut my speed down by about 30%. But 85% it wass. And I think that by doing a llot of behind-the-scenes work such as stub-sorting, and by addding edit summaries where they are required (i.e., major edits), I am setting a good example. Two extra clicks? It takes three clicks to change a stub - select, copy/paste, save. To add a stub message like "stub" requires select, copy/paste, write "stub", reset minor, save, a total of eight clicks. Even if the clicks take the same length of time as eacch other, that's still 267% as many clicks. If you've got mild arthritis and it takes a while for you to type a word like "stub" without making mistakes, it takes far longer. It looks like we're going to have to agree to disagree on this. All I am doing is following the instructions at Wikipedia:Edit summaries which make it cclear tht they are not always required on minor edits. You seem to think they are, and that's your prerogative, but my way of editing is equally appropriate an correct. I'm sorrt if you ddon't like it, but that's all there is to it. Suburbs (and townships?) of Dunedin

Nice template; you appear to be naming the next place what aint a suburb beyond the last suburb in each direction (eg Aramoana...). it wouldn't take much to comprehensively list all townships in the city boundary, eg Warrington, Outram, Midddlemarch, Waikouaiti, etc... would this take it too far beyond your brief?

Oops -strange, I should have got an edit conflict note on that. The version I edited definitely didn't have the extra bit you re-added (otherwise i wouldn't have added the "?" comment after the incomplete sentence). As for notability, WP tends to use the rule "Notability is not inherited". That is, the relation of a famous person is better mentioned in that person's article unless they've actually done something notable themselves. I'd say Mary Guibert's borderline at best. The irony is that the original letter that I was replying to was by someone i've known for years in real life - I stayed with Aaron (User:Motorau) and his family when I last visited the Fiordland area. My reply was intended to be a bit of an ad for Wikipedia saying that anyone with extra info about southern NZ could ad info and as long as itb was good info it would be welcomed, but that bit was "abridged" out of the printed version, sadly. Vexing Vexillology

Flags, UTNZ etc

I understand that the UTNZ flag is derived from the Church Missionary Society flag, and that in turn the Shaw, Savill & Albion Line flag is derived from the UTNZ one. I have never knowingly seen either of these two flags. I wonder if one or two of the "unofficial" ones derive from these two variants?

All the UTNZ-style flags carried by hikoi partticipants etc in all recent news photos I perused the other night had eight-pointers.

Huh? They were both. They were a group who happened to be a band. And the two terms can each be used for the Beatles in different contexts.
