Re: Reverting multiple edits

Re your message: I was using popups, but you can do it manually by listing the article history, clicking the time/date of the revision you want to revert to (marked as #7 in the screen shot) which will show you the old revision, then clicking the usual Edit button on the top (which will give you a warning about editing an old revision of the page), and clicking save after putting in an edit summary. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 23:02, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Image with unclear copyright to be moved to Commons?

I posted a couple of questions on File talk:Marincello1968.jpg last September, but have gotten no response. I am concerned that though the copyright issue has not been addressed, the image has been flagged as a priority to be moved to Wikipedia Commons. Gorthian (talk) 21:18, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi.
I changed the images in the descriptions to be blue links instead of embedded copies of the images. If the purpose were comparison, then that might be properly done in an article somewhere, not in the file description. Thanks for pointing that out.
I also tagged the images as "Don't move to Commons" until your outstanding license question on the talk page is addressed.
(I updated/clarified your comment there to reflect my actions) Begoontalk 02:46, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
I should, however also point out that you haven't asked the question anywhere likely to gain attention by posting it there. The edit notice for file talk pages says:

There are many things this page is NOT for:

...
...
So maybe asking the question again there would provide a quicker overall resolution. Begoontalk 03:08, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Thank you so much for your help! Especially for marking the images as not to be moved yet. I will ask my question at one of the suggested places. Gorthian (talk) 09:49, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
You are welcome. Good luck! Begoontalk 10:04, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of ICID

A tag has been placed on ICID requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G6 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an orphaned disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates two or fewer extant Wikipedia pages and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic); or
  • disambiguates no (zero) extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. —Theopolisme (talk) 03:58, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, I'm still new. I looked specifically for this situation in the disambiguation guidance pages, but found no references. I'll try again once one of the articles has been written. Gorthian (talk) 04:03, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

Vandalism on Talk pages?

There have been some "statements" added to the Talk page for Jang Sung-taek that look an awful lot like vandalism. Is it all right to remove them? Or are any and all comments on Talk pages sacrosanct?

Thanks!

Gorthian (talk) 19:55, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

Not sacrosanct, but there is a lot of leeway, far more than on an article page. Could you indicate which edits you exactly think are vandalism? Maybe I'm missing something. Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 20:05, 16 December 2013 (UTC)
The last paragraphs in the sections Talk:Jang Sung-taek#Spelling on WP main page and Talk:Jang Sung-taek#Wrong word. The latter has been expanded since you answered. Sigh. Gorthian (talk) 20:19, 16 December 2013 (UTC)
Never mind, it's been done. Thank you for your help! Gorthian (talk) 20:35, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

OK ive left it but please bring up discussion on talkpage. I think the citation should be replaced onto another page not necessarily removed. May 2014 disambig contest: let's do it again!

Greetings fellow disambiguator! Remember back in February when we made history by clearing the board for the first time ever, for the monthly disambiguation contest? Let's do it again in May! I personally will be aiming to lead the board next month, but for anyone who thinks they can put in a better effort, I will give a $10 Amazon gift card to any editor who scores more disambiguation points in May. Also, I will be setting up a one-day contest later in the month, and will try to set up more prizes and other ways to make this a fun and productive month. Cheers! bd2412 T 18:48, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

Suggestions

Gorthian, it is good that you are asking for feedback on your first edits. Here is one suggestion. Your assessments of pages seem reasonable (and thank you for taking that on). However, it would be better if you would also try to fix any glaring problems with each article when you assess it. For example, Mining geology was tagged because it had no references. I spent a couple of minutes tracking some down on Google Books and added them. I couldn't do much more than that because, at best, snippet views were available - but at least now it is less likely that the article will be listed for deletion. RockMagnetist (talk) 01:01, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

Thank you, RockMagnetist, for letting me know what you think. (AND for the warm welcome below!) I do often "fix up" the articles I'm assessing, depending on my time frame. I'm glad you found references for Mining geology; I was surprised it hadn't even been created till recently. I did spend time de-orphaning it, but didn't feel up to tracking down refs yet.
I'll definitely look more closely at the articles I run across. However, I've had to give myself a kind of ultimatum about fixing "everything in sight." I used to work that way all the time, and I found I never got any one task done--I kept moving from error to improvement to reference and article to link to policy. So now I tend to focus more on a single task at a time, or else I'd never finish anything! (Not that any of this is ever finished.)
Again, thanks! - Gorthian (talk) 05:59, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
It's often a question of breadth or depth: whether you want to specialize in one kind of problem across a range of articles, or all of the problems in one article. I'm inclined towards an article focus, but I don't think there is anything wrong in taking a broad approach. There is something to be said for giving priority to glaring problems. ~ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 23:05, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Wikidata:WikiProject Geology

Hi Gorthian! You are also more than welcome to join d:Wikidata:WikiProject Geology. It is the equivalent project to Wikipedia but concerned with essential data that describe geologic phenomena. For example for stratigraphic units you can add stratigraphic relationships (hanging wall unit, footwall unit). I will definitely explore more over there and, who knows? You may not be the only one at d:Wikidata:WikiProject Geology any more. ;-) - Gorthian (talk) 04:39, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

Would like help with refs

Hiya, -- trying to clean up unconnected references in 2014 Oso Mudslide -- can you help? The SLOG was part of the section that Wink deleted before, it is just a hold over, and now disconnected.....what to do? Thanks.--Forestrystudent (talk) 14:11, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

I'm sorry, Forestrystudent, I was away from the computer yesterday, and couldn't answer till now. I won't be able to do very much on WP for a few weeks; "real life" is full and exhausting at the moment, so I can only do brief pieces of editing. We are all volunteers at Wikipedia, so what we do is contingent on time available. I want to tackle the rewrite/overhaul of this article soon, but that must be delayed also. Weeding out the refs is necessary, and I applaud any efforts you can put towards that. I can't help, unfortunately, at least for a while.
Also, when you start a new message on a Talk page (as opposed to commenting on one that's already there), always click on the "start a new section" tab. I did it for you this time, just to help me keep some sort of order. :-) - Gorthian (talk) 19:48, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, Tobias1984! My apologies for the late reply.
Those are excellent suggestions; I've got a couple on my watchlist. I do have a few article ideas, but my time here is so fragmented that most of what I do is in fragments. For the moment, I must leave article-writing to others. But there's an endless wealth of small edits to complete, so when I'm here, I do those. I appreciate your stopping by! - Gorthian (talk) 05:39, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
You're doing a lot of small edits, so I thought that you will like the pages. There is a lot one can do on those pages like sorting, creating redirects to existing pages, deleting fulfilled requests. A good way to spend 15 minutes of Wiki time :).

Hi Gorthian, and welcome to the Wikiproject! I am afraid that the page is not massively active at present, but there is a proposal to re-invigorate the project. All the best, Matty.007 16:11, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi, Matty.007. Thanks for your welcome, and sorry I'm so late in replying! Months ago, I saw the proposal and discussion about an automated system, and so much of that made sense that I wanted to help. The rest of life intervened, though, and I didn't get to signing up till now.
I've kinda kept an eye on Wikipedia:Requested articles/Natural sciences/Environment and geology, doing redirects, finding links, and removing requests that had been fulfilled. But it's a mess of a system, and there's no record except the page histories, and they're not fun to search through. I think the system needs to be rebuilt from the ground up, and Matthewrbowker's plan seems to be a great starting place. I think I could help the most in picking apart and putting together categories. I hope it can get up and started for real. - Gorthian (talk) 05:29, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
Glad to have such an active editor on board. Best, Matty.007 18:10, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
