OK i'm a little confused honestly on what the copyright infringement is on the Midnight Watchmen page? Only thing i'm thinking is the mission statement, but thats public knowledge and still attributed the group. So please help me with clear examples so it can be brought into compliance. Thank you! Johnthewatchman (talk) 19:40, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion was declined by Panyd (talk · contribs) since only the mission statement was infringing. I've now taken the article to articles for deletion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Midnight Watchmen for notability. Goodvac (talk) 01:32, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

Help

{{adminhelp}} Could an admin please delete User:Goodvac/twinklefluff.js? I'm not sure if {{db-author}} works on js pages. Thanks, Goodvac (talk) 00:16, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

It does, though the template doesn't display. Just add it and it'll probably be deleted faster. In fact, a bot will probably zap it. GiftigerWunsch [TALK] 01:04, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
Oh, I see you already did. Anyway it's listed at Category:Candidates for speedy deletion by user so it shouldn't take too long; probably faster than an admin will respond via the adminhelp template. GiftigerWunsch [TALK] 01:05, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

Which Syntax?

How is {{in-universe}} placed in Category:Articles needing cleanup?Bernolákovčina (talk) 22:27, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

Well, not directly. {{in-universe}} is placed in Category:Articles that need to differentiate between fact and fiction, which falls under Category:Wikipedia cleanup. Goodvac (talk) 00:06, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Rollback

Hello, per your request, I've granted you Rollback rights! Just remember:

If you have any questions, please do let me know.

HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:21, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks. Even though I didn't explicitly request rollback capabilities, they'll be useful anyway. You probably saw my manual reversions. Goodvac (talk) 00:29, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
Indeed I did (I have a very broad watchlist), and thought this might come in handy! There's a handy script in my monobook.js that can mass rollback all edits by a particular editor if you bump into that sort of thing again. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:42, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
Sure, I'll check that out. Thanks, Goodvac (talk) 06:10, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

I actually like U.S. over US

Researched it and all. It's the normal usage in NYT and such and my mother is a report writer and said same. But there's a growing trend to US and it really doesn't matter.TCO (talk) 04:06, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

I changed "US" to "U.S." yesterday, believing it needed periods. But today I saw in the MoS that either way was correct, so I thought I'd change it back to the previous version. Since Painted turtle is largely written by you, I'll go ahead and change them all back to "U.S." Goodvac (talk) 04:34, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
Looks good. It has changed about 6 times now. I am really fine either way, although U.S. is preferable to traditionalists (which is probably safer). TCO (talk) 06:10, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
6 times? Wow, I didn't realize that... Goodvac (talk) 06:28, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
I might have lie..exaggerated. At least 5 changes, in addition to the inital version. It's actually a pretty painless change since the sort of person who changes it is also the sort to change them all. Inconsistency would bug me a lot more than which version it is. TCO (talk) 07:16, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

ever write a GA?

Thanks for the text edit on C. picta. We are doing a group project to get 10 turtle GAs (or FA, FL) in 2 months (actually 9 now!). Please come join us. They are fascinating articles to write and a good hearted crew.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Turtles#Goal_articles

TCO (talk) 07:11, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

I've never written a GA, but it'd be a good side-project as I continue working on Gateway Arch. Painted turtle was a quite interesting, enlightening article, so please let me know what you're working on and I'll try to help out. Goodvac (talk) 16:34, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
If you look at the short term list, there are several "plum" ones available. Most help would be to take one and be prime mover on it. We can help with some specific turtle things, but it's just basic research and article writing. You're a stud and can do any topic. Ernst is the best summary turtle book on real biology (rather than a glorified picture book) and available in libraries or by ILL (and he references primary lit if need to go deeper). For interaction with humans and images and the like, it's just normal web searching. They're really cool, somewhat enclosed, articles to write, and they get schoolchildren views and the like. Diamondback terrapin would be a sweet one to work on since it has all the human interactions. But Alligator snapping turtle would be fun and pretty "clean" to compile. Also very high views (which I tend to like, makes me know my work has an audience, not a writing exercise). I think someone else is already going after Common snapping turtle. TCO (talk) 17:35, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
I've decided that I'll finish Gateway Arch before moving on to another article (probably another two weeks). Then I'll choose one of the articles you listed above (if no one has taken it) and get rolling. Goodvac (talk) 03:02, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
Very cool. That would help us so much to have someone spearhead one. It's the key need, to just do the research and writing. Good luck with meester Gateway! TCO (talk) 03:13, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
I'm looking forward to it. I see that you've had great fun with painted turtle! :) Goodvac (talk) 04:49, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
But I'm not a "science" person, so it might be a challenge. Goodvac (talk) 05:20, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
There's a lot of stuff to be done on the non-science parts as well. I built that whole conservation/usage/culture section with it's 50 citations or so from Google searching my butt off. It's just the actual content researching and writing is always the bottleneck, so helping to get the page built is key. You could maybe even team with someone to do the bio stuff. Or just do it. Stuff is not that hard. And we can discuss and all. A lot of it for the bio parts is just summarizing Ernst.TCO (talk) 06:13, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
Sounds good! Goodvac (talk) 08:32, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for your work on it. This article was on my to-do list for over a year and really deserves to be a GA, but I never ended up expanding it. I hope you'll consider taking this to FA in the future (or I'll put that on my to-do list and let it sit there forever :P). I'm open for a collaboration if you aren't sure about FA :).

On a side note, ever been to the top of the Arch? It's fun when there's a lot of wind ;). /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 03:21, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

Hm, I was looking for sources to resolve the {{citation needed}} stuff, and I think the Post-Dispatch ref (currently ref 44; "The Gateway Arch," 24 May 2007) might be unclear about the "swaying 18 inches" part. I don't have access to the text, but other sources are saying 18 in total, and only 9 in to each side (see [1], [2], [3]). Could you verify if the Post-Dispatch specifically said 18 inches to each side, or just said 18 inches (in which case I'm almost certain it's 9 inches to each side)? Plus, I left some comments at Talk:Gateway Arch#Comments/feedback and hopefully this should save time at GAN (I didn't want to barge in and make big changes because I don't know what's going on!). Cheers, /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 04:19, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Before I started working on this article, I was shocked by the its state—given its importance in both St. Louis and the US as a whole, I had expected it to look like this. I went to the top of the Arch a few years back (I think in '07) and vaguely remember taking a neat photo (from the top) of the shadow created by the Arch.
I think I'll be fine going through GA, but I've never been to FA, so that'll be a big step. I really appreciate your insightful feedback. I just found a ridiculously long 500-page document (Historic Structure Report), and from the table of contents, it appears very useful, so this is going to be a long endeavor! Goodvac (talk) 09:24, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Yes, it's 18 inches total, not for each side. The source says: "The Arch sways a maximum of 18" (9" each way) in a 150 mph wind." Goodvac (talk) 09:49, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Could you look at the organization since I feel that there are too many small sub-sections? Maybe this article could have similar section titles as those in Statue of Liberty? Goodvac (talk) 09:59, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Wow, that 500-pager looks like a huge find. For the organization, I've reordered the article quite a bit, so see what you think :) Feel free to revert, etc., but I think this helps group similar information together and avoid too many scattered subsections. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 16:25, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks! That really cleaned up the article and will make it easier to determine where to add new content. Goodvac (talk) 21:00, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

Hey TCO! Thanks for putting me down as a collaborator on this wonderful article.
I'm afraid that I won't make it for the 2-month WikiProject turtles drive since I've found a myriad of new sources for Gateway Arch. But eventually I will get to a turtle article once I'm finished with the arch. Goodvac (talk) 08:42, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

Added template for SuggestBot

Hi,

Thanks for being one of SuggestBot's users! I hope you have found the bot's suggestions useful.

We are in the process of switching from our previous list-based signup process to using templates and userboxes, and I have therefore added the appropriate template to your user talk page. You should receive the first set of suggestions within a day, and since we'll be automating SuggestBot you will from then on continue to receive them regularly at the desired frequency.

We now also have a userbox that you can use to let others know you're using SuggestBot, and if you don't want to clutter your user talk page the bot can post to a sub-page in your userspace. More information about the userbox and usage of the template is available on User:SuggestBot/Getting Recommendations Regularly.

If there are any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me on my user talk page. Thanks again, Nettrom (talk) 16:31, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

Question about your edit...

Hello, I was wondering why you felt it necessary to remove the major characters section from The Lightning Thief. PrincessofLlyr royal court 14:18, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

Seeing as it's apparently headed to FA, I think it would be preferable to, as Wikipedia:Manual of Style (novels) states, use "a finely crafted plot summary ... to introduce the characters to the reader". Goodvac (talk) 22:03, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

VPT - floating sidebar

Hi Goodvac, I am having the same problem as you in your message to VPT here: Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#Interface_issues. Has TheDJ found a solution to this problem? Or should we wait a bit longer? I thought that the script was useful for me too. Regards, ќמшמφטтгמtorque 08:18, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

Thomas S Kenan

For some reason you keep merging my two different pages there were two Thomas S Kenan’s one who moved to Selma Alabama and one who lived in NC. One fought in the Civil War one didn’t the dates are all there the difference should be very clear. The first Thomas is grandfather to the second Thomas was born in 1771 died 1843 served on the NC State Senate in 1804 moved to Alabama served there in the House of Rep 1833. The seconded Thomas was born feb 12 1838 he fought in the Civil war attended college at Wake forest and UNC practiced law he was NC attorney general , Mayor of Wilson Nc 1872-1876, a lt Col in the confederate Army his list of achievements are very long. Why keep merging the two Thomas's? They are two totally different people that lived in difference places at different time periods both notable for different reasons you keep merging them into one page making the whole page incorrect. (Christaparker089 (talk) 19:21, 20 May 2011 (UTC))

I do not "keep merging" the two pages. I did it once and explained on the talk page why I did so.
Since you have now explained the differences between the two Thomas Kenans, please provide sources for them. Goodvac (talk) 19:43, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Logan RFA, Hypothetical AFD

In Logan's RFA, you presented this as a hypothetical AFD. Logan's answer was the correct one but if it were a real live AFD, there might be a few other things to consider...

1. Is the subject a living person? The nominator mentions that there are no sources in the article so if he's still converting oxygen into CO2, I might move it to the incubator until sourced.

2. If it were a live AFD, it might be possible that the nominator and/or the delete !voters are SPAs as some of the AFDs in the past that were similar to this that has been the case. If it appeared that they just "dropped out of the sky", then a checkuser might be in order. Not even our most hard core "good faith deletionists" would ignore obvious supersources. However, it could also be normal editors trying to get the "last word" in an edit war.

As for the RFA itself, it really sucks for logan that 14 opposes came pouring in on the last day. This justifies my response from someone offering me an early congratulations during my RFA. I told him that the opera isn't over til the fat lady sings. --Ron Ritzman (talk) 02:48, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

About Nicola (magazine)... erm... I can't believe I'm really asking this....

Hi Goodvac! I can't believe I'm really asking this, but anyways. Nicola (magazine) should be [[nicola (magazine)]]. I've added {{Lowercase title}} then tried to move it to the lower-case title, but no dice. What am I doing wrong (apart, of course, from editing articles about Japanese teenager-audience magazines)?!? --Shirt58 (talk) 09:52, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

Since that page uses two templates to style the title (the {{Lowercase title}} that you added and the {{Italic title}} built into {{Infobox magazine}}, you have to manually change the title with {{DISPLAYTITLE}} (more info) to use both of the templates. This is what I did.
By the way, you were not able to move the article because article titles cannot begin with a lowercase letter. Goodvac (talk) 15:35, 23 September 2011 (UTC)
Thank you indeed, Goodvac. Mightily appreciated! --Shirt58 (talk) 17:07, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi. You undid my revision: [9]. I can understand you might have thought "Oh, deleted a lot of content, must be a vandal", but the fact is that it isn't worthwhile "content" in WP terms. It is just invented nonsense by frat boys etc. None of it is verifiable and it has been hanging around with a cleanup template for many years. That is why I trimmed the article to its absolute basics. I don't think your kneejerk reversion was a good idea. What do you think? 86.144.27.197 (talk) 20:10, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

Dead End Link

Hi Goodvac,

Admittedly I am very new at Wikipedia, and not sure if I have discerned from the numerous examples if I qualify under the terms as "notable" or not. I really appreciate your insight and guidance.

My name is Kimberly Roberts and I am a Judy Garland impersonator, most notable in The Judy Monologues. I am also doing TV shows now too (non-Judy related). I have done appearances for private and public as Judy Garland. I don't have a website to refer you to, but in Google searches with my name and Judy Garland you will find me listed on a number of sites/pages, including Wikipedia.

I sincerely welcome what, if anything, I should do with the deadlink Goodvac. I certainly am not trying to self-promote, but if someone were to go to that link, I would much rather my name not dead end like that.

Thanks again in advance Goodvac!

Cheers! Kimberly kdrindy (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kdrindy (talkcontribs) 01:17, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi Kimberly! I have reviewed the Google News archive results for your name, and the sources do not look substantial enough to warrant a full article. The general notability guideline, which requires significant (in-depth) coverage of the subject in reputable sources, is the barometer by which articles are assessed. If you can provide me some in-depth articles focusing on you (Google News doesn't index everything), I'll be glad to review them and let you know if they meet the guidelines.
Since currently you are not notable (please understand that non-notability is no reflection on your talent or prowess as an actress; I have no doubt that you are good at what you do, considering your accurate impersonation here.), I am going to unlink your name (remove all dead links so that only your name shows; your name will not link anywhere). Thanks for understanding, Goodvac (talk) 23:04, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

Marcel Baltazard

Hey Goodvac I'm really thankfull for the improvements you did on my grandad's page: Marcel Baltazard. Did you know him? Have you heard about him ? I'd like to keep in tuch and again it was really nice from you. Olivier — Preceding unsigned comment added by OlivG (talkcontribs) 20:09, 6 November 2011 (UTC)

You are welcome, Olivier. I didn't know your grandad, but after I read some articles about him, he was definitely a man of accomplishments. I found this article as I was patrolling the articles at CAT:SPEEDY, and sometimes I see articles that do not meet the criteria to be deleted. Your grandad is very notable, so I decided to improve it and add sources. I hope you stick around and help out in other parts of the encyclopedia. Cheers! Goodvac (talk) 20:17, 6 November 2011 (UTC)

Wow, well thank you very much again, i'll do the same as you and keep on trying to help it :)ANd thank you for saving my article and my grand dad as well — Preceding unsigned comment added by OlivG (talkcontribs) 20:28, 6 November 2011 (UTC)

Okay, never mind then. Thanks for the {{User:Zalgo/scrolling}}. You're a rascal. ;) Goodvac (talk) 23:45, 6 November 2011 (UTC)

My compliments on your copy editing and rescue of the article, which I'd tagged for speedy deletion. Just wanted to acknowledge your constructive efforts--I've saved articles in the past, and inevitably wonder why the nominator didn't take a few extra minutes. Thank you, 76.248.149.98 (talk) 20:36, 7 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for noticing. On a side note, you should think about creating an account—you're an awfully productive and sensible IP editor. Cheers, Goodvac (talk) 21:31, 7 November 2011 (UTC)
Thank you. Been there; see my long and silly explanation here [10]. 76.248.149.98 (talk) 22:01, 7 November 2011 (UTC)
That's an illuminating, philosophical discourse. It's unfortunate, I agree, that some editors often have preconceptions about IPs and treat them as scum. I myself am sometimes guilty of that offense. If the problem of IP vandalism is serious enough to merit systemic change, then Wikipedia may well consider blocking all IP contributions. Until then, responsible editors and administrators are obliged to view edits individually. Good point. I will keep all this in mind. Take care, Goodvac (talk) 22:29, 7 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks! I <3 you :D Zalgo (talk) 22:26, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

I re-added the CSD tag to the Projapoti page because there is now way that it does not meet A1. All the article says "Projapoti is romantic Bangladeshi flim" which is not even a complete sentence. Can you explain how it does not meet A1? JDDJS (talk) 00:37, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

Google cache It doesn't have to be a complete sentence to pass A1. A1 is for "Articles lacking sufficient context to identify the subject of the article". The context of Projapoti is clear—it's a "romantic Bangladeshi flim". I see RHaworth (talk · contribs) has mistakenly deleted it. Goodvac (talk) 01:57, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

Biography of Marcel Baltazard

Sir, Please don't change the biography of Marcel Baltazard. I changed it on the special request of Suzanne Baltazard, his daughter who worked at the Pasteur Institute of Paris too and has built the Baltazard website.
