Information icon Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include, but are not limited to, links to personal websites, links to websites with which you are affiliated (whether as a link in article text, or a citation in an article), and links that attract visitors to a website or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam guideline for further explanations. Because Wikipedia uses the nofollow attribute value, its external links are disregarded by most search engines. If you feel the link should be added to the page, please discuss it on the associated talk page rather than re-adding it. [1] MrOllie (talk) 21:41, 12 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

September 2023[edit]

Warning icon Please stop. If you continue to add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, you may be blocked from editing. It is considered spamming and Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising or promotion. Because Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, additions of links to Wikipedia will not alter search engine rankings. Hey MrOllie... I'm a little confused at what is inappropriate about that external link? It was the source I used to update the section, which listed all of the data sourced from state gaming commissions. That section said it needed more current information and nothing I wrote was wrong or incorrect data. I'm not advertising or promoting, I went to Google and typed in the information I was looking for and that was the source that came up. Please advise - not trying to be blocked from editing, I've worked on many other pages without issue. Gamblinghistory (talk) 14:56, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Dressing a spam link up as a citation does not mean it isn't a spam link. Have a look at WP:RS for information on Wikipedia's sourcing requirements. Most stuff you find on google will not meet the requirements. MrOllie (talk) 15:41, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Not trying to die on the hill here, but still confused after reading the WP:RS. The page I sourced appears to be in line with many other sources already used on the page. Some (myself) might even say it's less spammy than source 41 or (especially) source 54 for example. Is the issue it being a general page rather than a news/article from a publication? Gamblinghistory (talk) 18:35, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
should I be linking instead of citing? Gamblinghistory (talk) 19:15, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Promoting your own web sites or sites that you are affiliated with is spam. Stop it. Toohool (talk) 02:51, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not affiliated with NFL.com or legalsportsbetting.com - those were just sources used... I don't why this keeps being an issue every time I make an update. Gamblinghistory (talk) 15:02, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please understand what are reliable sources by reading the abovementioned RS link again. Stick to reliable news media sources. The next time you spam Wikipedia with promotional links such as the above, we would have no option but to block you indefinitely. Don't try this again. Thank you, Lourdes 10:08, 12 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Lourdes, I'm still a little confused after reading it. It says promo links but that is basically half of the links sourced on the /Sports_betting page. I linked to a news article that linked to the actual sportsbook revenue data from all states and the NFL.com.
On the sports betting page, #1 links to a marketed site, #2 is dead, #10 is a literal spam page trying to sell a product, #11 is an affiliate marketer, #18 is a dead link, #25 is an affiliate marketer, #29 the same, #32 as well... the list goes on... I'm providing great bits of detail and information to make these pages better and it seems you are content with old and outdated information as well as spammy links. Pretty soon, ESPN will be affiliated and have their own sportsbook. So, I'm not sure where you're drawing the line here. Please advise because I don't understand - every other page I edit on has no issues. Gamblinghistory (talk) 20:14, 12 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
My view would be that you should use the talk page of the respective articles to first list the source you wish to use and the content you wish to use. If you face no opposition, go ahead and post the same. However, in case you get reverted, again post on the talk page of the said article enquiring the issue. Read WP:BRD for more details. Of course, if there is any particular source for which you want an immediate assessment, list it here and I can give my opinion. Thanks, Lourdes 06:27, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
