Shield requests

These are now done

-Jeff (talk) 23:24, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi Freewayguy, from my watchlist I noticed you received the above list of "state name" labeled interstate shields. I know you do a lot of work on exit lists and I was involved in helping you stop the recent IP66.66 vandal.
You do good work with the lists, but I want to point out to you the the states above, especially Massachusetts and Rhode Island, are no longer using the "state name" shield and replaced them with generic shields. The best source I have on this is the map and list at the bottom of the interstate-guide.com website, and also I have travelled interstates in most of the east coast and Great Lakes states recently and can confirm that the generic or "neutered" shields are replacing or have completely replaced the "state name" ones. This is especially true for exit overhead signs. Also, the shields here have numbers that are smaller than the standard causing them to be more difficult to read in Wikitables.
I go into more detail about this at the ELG discussion about IP6.66. I am mentioning this to you because these shields should not be used as they are obsolete and non-standard, and I don't want you to waste your time changing current lists for these states. Contact me if you would like to discuss this. Sswonk (talk) 13:53, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

I know MA and RI don't use state-name specifics. Even interstate-guides paint it black. I just like to have it since it looks cool, just as long as it's not use on articles it's fine. I don't know if I will still have enough time as I did over summer. I might only be 2/5 as active.--57Freeways 22:21, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Right, I remember the red US 1 shield for the Dixie Highway in Florida. I thought you might be collecting historic shields, and not doing the lists with them. I just wanted to make sure. Thanks for getting back to me. Sswonk (talk) 23:16, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

With the states of pink states on interstate-guide, I don't know if it actually uses state or neutral shields. For now use state-specific seems like a good plan.--57Freeways 23:18, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

I still think the numbers are too small: CO state generic – PA state generic . See the difference? At 20px, the PA state shield is not legible. I think they need to be remade with the numbers the correct size per MUTCD (5:12 ratio to height of shield), or only use generics in tables at 20px. Sswonk (talk) 01:21, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
  • yes, Image:I-280 (PA).svg is the way the shields suppose to look like. The white text under blue background suppose to be smaller. For all CO shields, I'll get somebody to fix it, but metric versions have exist. This will make too many list for IFD.--57Freeways 23:24, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
    • No! I think you misunderstood. The CO shield is correct, the PA shield is the one that is too small. MUTCD says the number is at a 5:12 ratio to the height of the shield, like the CO I-270 shield. The ones that are small like PA I-280 are too hard to read in the exit lists. Those are the ones that should change. See this image. Sswonk (talk) 01:53, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
