re:IEEE Awards material[edit]

Yes, I work for IEEE. I have been working to update and correct these pages about IEEE awards. We think that an IEEE volunteer/member started them some years ago, but then stopped contributing. Members and volunteers come and go, and that's what appears to have happened with these pages. Some had not been touched for a few years, so the lists of recipients of the awards were not complete. Other awards had had their names changed, etc. That's all I'm trying to do. Some months ago before I began this I asked on the talk/forum if it was OK to do this and it seemed like it was. Tell me what you consider promotional and I'll stop doing that. I've also been trying hard to add links to other Wikipedia pages, in particular existing pages devoted to winners of these IEEE awards. I've also been updating those pages to indicate that the person has won the award. I've also been adding ref links to outside sites concerning these persons and the awards as they have won them. re: the images - I have been including a note that the IEEE Awards team has given permission to use the images of the awards, which they have. I've asked them to write up a formal permissions document which I/they will send as soon as they complete it. Thanks in advance for your attention. re:IEEE Material[edit]

Hello again Randykitty,

Per your suggestion I have had the copyright owner of the IEEE medal images send mail with permission to use those image on the IEEE awards and medals pages I've been updating. I hope that clears this up.

On a larger matter: As you know, I work at IEEE and have noticed many errors, and "holes" in info about IEEE, it's awards, sub organizations (Societies and Councils) and publications. And, as I mentioned, we think that it was various IEEE members and volunteers who built many of the IEEE-related pages over the years. We have tried hard to track down these folks and ask >them< to do the updates, but to no avail: we just don't know who they were.

So, since your are an experienced WP editor (and I'm a beginner...) I coming to you to ask what we can do to expedite the correction and update of these pages? IEEE is a not-for-profit, membership-driven, professional organization. We're not trying to "promote" the organization on Wikipedia - we're just trying to make the information about IEEE correct and complete. How does this contravene the WP guidelines? Should we simply wait for someone else (maybe an interested volunteer/member?) to do it? We could ask a volunteer/member to do it, but that seems counter to the guidelines in itself.

Our organization is complex: some of the Societies and Technical Councils have professional support from the IEEE Operations Center (where I work...) and some don't. Some are more "professionalized" than others. The staff here is tasked with serving the professional goals of the members, who are typically engineers, scientists and academics, not communications or web professionals. They expect us to represent the organization and it's activities for them and will complain mightily if they see things they consider wrong. This is a complicated dynamic that we struggle with all the time. I was contacted over the weekend by the President of the IEEE Technology Management Council (who is herself a respected researcher at IBM) to inform me that she had done an update to the WP page for the IEEE Technology Management Council and it was flagged as "promoting an organization", and set for quick deletion as a result. Why? This Council is legitimate research group, and the IEEE Operations Center does not control its activities. Are they being penalized for the awards update work I have been doing?

I notice from your history that you have made somewhat a specialty of WP pages on scientific journals and other pubs. My audit of WP pages relating to IEEE journals and publications show that the list on WP is very much incomplete and out of date: it's missing at least 90 IEEE publications. And, in many cases the existing pages are incorrect, with wrong info an frequency, editor, etc. Is it OK to correct these, and add pages for the missing journals? Isn't this encyclopedic information? What should we do?

  • Hi, we often have people employed by publishers (even commercial ones) do updates or even create new articles. Sometimes that goes wrong, but often it works fine. With some care, neutral articles on journals are actually not that difficult to create. We have a journal article writing guide and if you follow the instructions in that guide, there's not much that can go wrong.   • I just had a look at the article on the IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society (I moved the article to its new name). I didn't see any attempt at speedy deletion, though, so perhaps something got mixed up. I drastically reduced the article. I removed a lot of promotional stuff (Twitter and Facebook accounts, language such as "widely read publications", etc). "Promotional" does not necessary mean that there is a monetary interest. I also removed a lot of intricate detail that is perhaps of interest to the membership (such as how officers are elected), but which are not really of encyclopedic interest. Articles on societies are a bit more difficult to write in a neutral way than journal articles, which can be written in a kind of formulaic way. (See also WP:PEACOCK and WP:WEASEL). As far as I see, none of the contributors to the IEEE-related article that I edited received a warning. I did remove a lot of stuff from IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society (I also moved it to the new name of the society), some of it was promotional, the stuff about the governance I removed not for being promotional but because it is not encyclopedic information at all. IEEE articles[edit]

Hello, and thanks for your contributions to Wikipedia's coverage of IEEE related topics. I have noted your previous correspondence with User:Randykitty. I would like to add a few other notes which might help you and other IEEE staff and volunteers to make contributions that are less likely to be tagged as problematic. First of all it is important to note that Wikipedia is based on a set of policies and guidelines that all editors should be aware of and refer to for guidance. Probably your biggest hurdle is notability, which sometimes gets pages flagged for deletion by someone who hasn't used common sense and your best guard against having articles tagged in this manner is to use references from independent sources wherever possible, and to rewrite text so that it doesn't appear to be a mirror of your website. Adding ideas from more than one page, or better yet, independent sources, and in your own words, will help it read more like an encyclopaedic entry. Wikipedia:Writing better articles is a good resource.

I made a stab at improving IEEE Biomedical Engineering Award. I edited the lead, primarily merging multiple paragraphs into one, and expanded the list of recipients to include the citations (as quotes, so it is ok to copypaste these), introduced some wikilinks where available to explain the technical terms, and added a little background about each person. The latter enables the introduction of secondary sources, but too frequently they sadly don't do anything to add to the notability of the subject of the article. In going through the list of awards fixing a problem in the infobox, I noticed a few other articles where information other than the recipients name was included, and I think this is the way to improve these articles. In general, prose is prefered to lists and tables. If maintenance, or the sheer number of recipients and information about them, becomes too onerous, one option is to only include only the most notable recipients. This might in fact be of more interest to the casual reader. See Wikipedia:NOTEVERYTHING
