Lawrence Sheriff School[edit]

You seem to have edited back to a poorly written version of the Student Council section on the Lawrence Sheriff School page. This seems a bizarre decision. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.146.14.250 (talk) 20:05, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actions of Blotto adrift[edit]

Please look into the actions of Blotto adrift. He keeps changing the Trenton Ontario page to relfect his own edits. He has edited the page one one day more than 7 times. Now the page has been locked with his incorrect edits showing. Please ask Blotto adrift to understand that this is not the purpose of wikipedia and please correct the page. Thank you —Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.189.25.208 (talk) 15:22, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

On 17 January, following a series of edits to Wikipedia talk:Requests for arbitration/IRC/Proposed decision, User:FloNight protected the page and added the following in an edit summary: "I protected the page from all editing until the case is closed or edits all agree to make all productive comments about the proposed ruling and not other editors". Flonight has not left any further messages as yet, so I am posting this message to all those who edited the page in this period, and asking them to consider signing this section at Flonight's talk page indicating that they will abide by this request. Hopefully this will help move the situation forward, and enable the talk page to be unprotected (with any necessary warnings added) so that any editor (including those uninvolved in this) can comment on the proposed decision. AfD nomination of Taco Liberty Bell[edit]

An editor has nominated Taco Liberty Bell, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Taco Liberty Bell and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 15:16, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

John Kerr[edit]

I don't know how you edit a title, but could you please change the title of 'Olav Kerr, Lord Kerr of Kinlochard' to John Olav Kerr, Lord Kerr of Kinlochard? A google search will show he is known as John Kerr or Lord Kerr, never by his middle name. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 10-styb (talkcontribs) 12:10, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cydebot edit comments[edit]

Hi Cyde. Would it be possible to have the bot's edit comments link directly to CFD and similar discussions? It's always nicer when a bot's "reason for botting" is fully documented, in my experience. --SB_Johnny | talk 02:07, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can see, the links are already there; what more would you like? Please be specific, with diff links of edit summaries you think are lacking and which links you would add to them. --Cyde Weys 03:28, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it's actually this diff that got me thinking (or more accurately the one after that one). The edit comment just says WP:CFD, but of course that was a while ago so whatever the conversation was (which I figured out after noticing it was just removing a definite article) wasn't on the CFD page anymore. It's just good to have a link to a conversation to see why whatever the bot is doing was done. --SB_Johnny | talk 05:12, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Speedy renames don't have full discussions to link to. As a consequence, they must adhere to a pretty strict set of criteria on when they can be done (for instance, conforming capitalization to the MoS, expanding acronyms, correcting misspellings, etc.). Read WP:CFD for more details on the process. --Cyde Weys 14:45, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cydebot leaving CFD categories[edit]

Cydebot left two CFD categories on several new category pages when implementing CFR renames per Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2008 January 29#Category:Côte d'Ivoire people. Is this a Cydebot error, of just a fault in the parameters that someone gave it? I've fixed the affected pages now but you can see them in my contribution history, 23:37 to 23:47 on 5 February 2008. - Fayenatic (talk) 23:54, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was about to say the same thing. It looks like Cydebot, when making edits to categories that are marked for deletion, renaming, whatever, is moving the cfd categories outside of the CFD template (for example, Category A is set for renaming to Category B. Category C is in Cateogry A, but Category C needs a rename to Category D. When the bot moves Category C from A to B, it moves Category:Categories for renaming (or deletion, or merging) and Category:CfD 2008-01 below the "END CFD TEMPLATE" marker. So when the bot goes to move Category C to Category D, it adds Category:Categories for renaming and Category:CfD 2008-01 to Category D instead of removing them. (See the deleted edits here for a clearer example). --Kbdank71 18:10, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've made a change to the bot that should fix this. If any errors remain, of course, please do let me know. --Cyde Weys 00:45, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, take a look at the history for Category:Escapees from United States federal government detention which still seems to have the bug. Vegaswikian (talk) 06:27, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If you look at this diff you'll see what caused the error: someone else ran a script before Cydebot got to it that moved the CFD maintenance categories outside of the CFD template. The only fix that comes to mind is to have Cydebot always remove those categories instead of relying on the HTML comment tags. --Cyde Weys 13:02, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
AWB has a nasty habit of moving the CFD categories outside of the template when doing general updates. My bot has the same issue; it just moves everything that isn't part of the subst'ed template, so if AWB has moved the categories, the bot will create the new category with the CFD cats. If I had time, I'd implement that fix of just removing them, but it doesn't happen all that often, IMO, and it'll get caught and fixed at the end of the month anyway. --Kbdank71 13:54, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
On a bit of a tangent, PyWikipediaBot used to have a problem with reorganizing all the categories on a page into a list at the bottom. But then I wrote the functionality to edit categories in place and made it the default behavior for all of the category robots. We haven't had a PyWikipediaBot-caused error of this nature since. --Cyde Weys 14:00, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Problem with CFD from Jan 27?[edit]

I was wondering if there was a problem with the CFD from Jan 27th (Category:Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees as a Performer to Category:Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees)? Cydebot seems to be skipping it. --Kbdank71 16:10, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cydebot request[edit]

Hi, I've been pointed to User:Cydebot for help with tagging a big number of user subcategories, all of which I'm inclined to nominate for discussion. There's no hurry, but I'd appreciate information on if this is possible/a good idea in general, how it would work and what I would have to do. Thanks in advance, User:Dorftrottel 18:19, February 11, 2008

Tagging problem[edit]

Cydebot keeps changing the tag on Image:Flag of Thunder Bay.svg from {{tl:insignia}} to {{tl:Non-free logo}}. I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be doing that. vıdıoman 08:34, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cydebot and 'clever' template categories[edit]

Hello I noticed your bot had done this this . There was some wikicode trickery going on to only categorize the page into Category:Main pages with misplaced talk page templates if the template was used in the main space, your bot moved the categories out of the wikicode to the base of the article, which broke the trickery. I think I have corrected it for one article , see here

Unfortunately this has meant quite a few articles are now in Category:Main pages with misplaced talk page templates which should not be. GameKeeper (talk) 20:38, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see what there is to do to fix this at this point. Templates with complicated syntax in them should not be substituted. --Cyde Weys 01:40, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Template:User userfy[edit]

A tag has been placed on Template:User userfy requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{transclusionless}}</noinclude>).

my apologies[edit]

It seems that I've been entirely wrong-headed and that it seems that in removing the recent templates from your page that I was stopping Raphael1 welcoming you to the community, in his own words "That you don't want me to welcome other editors to Wikipedia or commend them to Wikipedia:Introduction does not give you the right to blank my posts from their talk pages.".

My deepest apologies, let me just say that if after six years (where has the time gone) and tens of thousands of edits, that if you haven't made it to the Wikipedia:Introduction, you really should, it's most interesting. Cydebot CFD hiccup[edit]

Cyde, Cydebot re-implemented [1] an old CFD decision that was later overturned at DRV. Is it possible to automatically reverse the category de-population so I don't have to do it by hand? Thanks either way.--chaser - t 18:51, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you can get me a list of what should be in the category then I can have Cydebot add the category to each one rather than having to do it manually. To make the list, I would suggest you work off of Cydebot's contribs list from the original depopulation. --Cyde Weys 03:26, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Five "Date of birth/death" categories and five "Place of birth/death" categories[edit]

In June 2007, following the consensus view that the ten Date/Place categories should be repurposed to the discussion page, Cydebot performed that praiseworthy task. In the intervening nine months, however, numerous well-intentioned, but misguided editors have continued to add these categories to the article page to the extent that in some instances, the misplaced entries have begun to outnumber the properly situated ones. I hope it would be possible for Cydebot to regularly (or, at least, hopefully, as frequently as schedule allows) sweep these malplaced categories from the article page to the talk/discussion page. The ten categories in question are:

Thank you for your valuable service and your million+ edits.—Roman Spinner (talk) 05:26, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hrmm, we're putting categories on talk pages now? Where exactly do the categories in a talk page go, at the bottom? I mean, this is possible, but I'm not really aware of categories being used on talk pages like this. Templates yes, but not categories. --Cyde Weys 14:35, 18 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nearly a year ago, in late April 2007, following complaints by a few editors that the maintenance categories (which denote the absence of years, dates and places of birth and death) were creating visual clutter among the "standard" categories at the bottom of biographical article pages, two CfDs dealing with a number of the maintenance categories, arrived at a consensus. The above ten categories (dates and places are considered to contain needed, but non-essential, or "defining" data) were repurposed to the discussion pages, where a small group of specialized editors, with a penchant for research, could continue to complete the missing information. Only the absence of the years of birth and death (five "Year categories"—Category:Year of birth missing, etc.) was noted as "defining", thus entitling those "Year categories" to remain on article pages. The wholesale transfer of the ten non-defining categories was completed by COBot on June 132007 (example: COBot's final transferred entry on June 13, Talk:Zoran Vraneš, can be seen in that talk page's revision history). To keep all of the categories together, the agreed-upon place for the newly-transferred categories was to be directly below the Wikitags/templated categories and, if present, DEFAULTSORT (seen as a more-precise sorting feature than "listas="). In the event a recent or newly-created biographical article does not yet have a discussion page, Cydebot would create the pertinent discussion page and place the transferred category or categories at the top of the page. Tens of thousands of these non-templated maintenance categories have already been placed on discussion pages (and continue to be placed manually) but, unfortunately, a number of well-meaning, persistent editors continue to add them to article pages. Hopefully, Cydebot would be able to help maintain the equilibrium as schedule permits.—Roman Spinner (talk) 02:43, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My intention was to make Category:Magic (paranormal) and Category:Magic (illusion) subcats of Category:Magic when I tried to place the request at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2008 March 22.

I thought my request was unsuccessful, so I went ahead and performed the changes manually. Question re. CSD list[edit]

There's an AN thread going, regarding the way people are transcluding User:Cyde/List of candidates for speedy deletion, making it tough to go through Whatlinkshere when deciding whether to delete. Is it possible to change these to external links without removing any functionality from the page? Ral315 (talk) 13:19, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why the hell are people transcluding that list?! That seems like the obvious problem to fix. --Cyde Weys 00:57, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm pretty sure there isn't one, but if there's a way to keep the list on WP:DELT while eliminating other transclusions that'd be great. It's a great convenience to have it there. --lifebaka (Talk - Contribs) 18:34, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please consider joining the working group for the WMF DC Chapter[edit]

Please consider joining the working group for the WMF DC chapter. Since we have a very active and very community oriented DC/MD/VA area group of Wikipedians, it only makes sense to develop it as a chapter, especially given the recent changes to the Board of Trustees structure, giving chapters more of a vote. Hopefully we will be either the first or the second officially recognized US Chapter (WMF Pennsylvania is pending as well), and hopefully our efforts will benefit WMF Penn as well. Remember, it's a working group, and this is a wiki, so feel free to offer changes, make bold changes to the group, and discuss on the talk page! I hope to see you there, as well as Wikimeetup DC 4 if you're attending. SWATJester Son of the Defender 16:47, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bot question[edit]

Your name has come up here and your comments are welcomed. Franamax (talk) 19:31, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I'm not wasting my time on this anymore. This has already come up on three separate occasions with the same resolution each time: Cydebot's deletions are completely uncontroversial and are saving lots of unnecessary human gruntwork. --Cyde Weys 02:34, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK, thanks for the response and I do see that you have disclosed on your bot page for quite a long time that you will use your admin login to do certain tasks. I'm not really here to argue about bad bots or bad admins. I do have a little quibble when you say you won't waste your time on this anymore, that kind of leaves out us little guys who are trying to understand and don't have the benefit of calling to hand all the history at the drop of a hat. I would just urge you to be as open as possible with your automated ops on your admin account, log them as they happen, indicate in your edit summaries that it's the bot doing it, leave the maximum possible trail to what's going on. There's really no problem with doing automated edits iff they are on a solid basis and can be scrutinized by everyone, just like every one of our manual edits can be. There is an extra concern when your eyeball might not be on each one of those edits, I've seen a few times now when tools run awry. Anyway, put it all out in the open, let it stand or fall on its merits, leave a trail for future generations. Cheers! Franamax (talk) 05:01, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It is all out in the open. It has been for over a year. All of the bet deletions are clearly marked as such. I just don't know what more you're expecting. Just because you weren't aware of it previously doesn't mean there's anything wrong. The "no admin bot" maxim that people have been repeating through rumors hasn't been true for years. It's just that there's no formal approval process, so each bot is handled individually by the community. There have been some admin bots that were found wanting and that were ceased. No one has ever proposed a serious problem with my admin bot. --Cyde Weys 15:33, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And agghh, I spent an hour formulating the post above, save it, check my watchlist and the entry immediately above my change to your page is this. Also a discussion I just saw somewhere about VoAbot flagging addition of plurals to an article as vandalism, though I can't locate that just now, so that may be frivolous. Point here though is, botops are a matter of concern, they are occupying a lot of the community's time, and a defensive "we've already been through this" attitude is not necessarily productive. It really would be good if the bot community could get together and mount some coherent explanations, FAQ's, outreach, to communicate why bots are beneficial, and what avenues individuals have to figure out WTF is going on. /semi-rant. Franamax (talk) 05:25, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see how that other case is relevant. That bot blocked; mine is only deleting category pages. It's not like a bot either does no admin actions or it does all of them. It can only do what it's been programmed to do (barring SkyNet). I can assure you, my bot has not been programmed to do blocks, and if you distrust me on that, you can scour my block log to verify for yourself. --Cyde Weys 15:33, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bot comment[edit]

Hi Cyde. I'm sorry to bother you, but your bot has caused me a little consternation because of an image of mine that it's flagged for deletion. The image in question is up for deletion because it has been copied over to the Wikimedia Commons.

Now, that's not really a bad thing in of itself, but the user who moved it there (Sswelm) hasn't done a particularly good job, such that (a) it's not obvious that I created the image (which could cause trouble down the line if someone wants to query/attribute the image), and (b) the wikilinks that I used in my description of the image simply don't work in the Commons. Since my Wikipedia image is bot-tagged for deletion, information not present in the Commons version will be lost (in that special Wikipedia sense of "lost"). Now, I could tidy up the Commons version, but I don't have an account there, and I don't want to have to do this every time one of my images is (badly; and without informing me) moved there.

Anyway, I'm not writing to ask for a solution, but just to point out that your bot might inadvertently be removing attribution and other information by preferentially deleting Wikipedia images over their (ostensible) clones in the Commons. If Commons users do their jobs properly this shouldn't happen, but that's not guaranteed (i.e. this isn't your bot's fault at all). Finally, as an aside, while your bot flagged my image for deletion on the image's discussion page, it didn't leave a message on my talkpage, which seems remiss. Cheers, --Plumbago (talk) 11:30, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can you elaborate? I can't figure out what's supposed to be the problem here. All I see my bot doing is renaming a template to avoid a redirect; nothing more. It doesn't flag images for deletion, nor does it actually delete any. As for removing attribution from images, I don't understand what you're talking about; Cydebot doesn't do that either. Could you be real specific with diff links, please? --Cyde Weys 23:40, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry Cyde Weys, my bad. A warning flag appeared on the image above and I mistakenly attributed it to the edit that your bot made (apart from me, the only other editor was the bot). I now realise that the warning flag had nothing whatsoever to do with your bot, and instead seems to be automatically added to an image whenever it also appears on the Commons. Duh. Please accept my apologies. Best regards, --Plumbago (talk) 13:31, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. --Cyde Weys 00:12, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

FIU Golden Panthers[edit]

The category should be called FIU Golden Panthers, just like USC Trojans. It is far more common to call them the FIU Golden Panthers, including the official site at fiusports.com. This move is idiotic.►Chris NelsonHolla! 00:08, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comment on CfD[edit]

I see that you recently had Cydebot move articles out of a bunch of categories that were renamed pursuant to Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2008_May_16#African-American_categories. However, you did not check the destination categories. At least three of these destinations already existed -- Category:African American actors, Category:African American history, and Category:African American singers, but they contained {{category redirect}} templates pointing them to the same title with a hyphen. You didn't remove these now-invalid redirects, so when RussBot did its regular weekly run today, it duly started emptying out these categories and moving all the contents back to the old, deleted titles. I suggest that, before carrying out a category rename, you check the rename destination and make sure that it has the appropriate content. --Russ (talk) 10:15, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image attribution error during transwiki[edit]

Hi, Cyde. Concerning your message on my talk page regarding commons:Image:Canal 035.jpg, attribution information is copied automatically by BetacommandBot from file history which listed Mintguy as original uploader. It seems that there is a missing file upload entry which caused that error. As I can see you have already corrected attribution info on Commons, so I guess that this settles this issue. Cheers! --Meno25 (talk) 16:19, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Edge STP[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Edge STP, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? I noticed it on your list too. Dgtsyb (talk) 06:42, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting category[edit]

I don't think that any concensus was reached in the discussion on Category:Companies with current or prior private equity ownership. Can you please explain the decision to remove before deleting |► ϋ r b a n я e n e w a l ◄| (talk) 00:41, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Closing CfDs[edit]

Hi, Cyde. Last night, your bot closed out a CfD by moving all the pages from Category:Scottish New Zealanders to Category:New Zealanders of Scottish descent. Great. But it didn't observe that the latter category contained a {{category redirect}} template. So when RussBot ran a couple of hours later, it moved all the pages back to Category:Scottish New Zealanders per the redirect; and then Cydebot moved them all back to Category:New Zealanders of Scottish descent a little later. Please, please have your bot check that the destination category exists and is not a redirect before carrying out any moves. --Russ (talk) 09:59, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Admin bots[edit]

Hello, I have recently had an encounter with an unapproved admin bot, and despite an extremely clear dictate by policy that these bots should be blocked, have been discouraged from doing so. Depending how this situation resolves, I will likely file an arbitration request to hopefully resolve this issue once and for all. You commented on Wikipedia talk:Requests for comment/Adminbots, stating that you ran an admin bot. To help get an idea of how widespread admin bots are, as well as get a uniform decision, I would like to ask: Do you still operate this bot, and does it operate when you are not present? Category "Negro League baseball" to "Negro league baseball"[edit]

This is not an appropriate change. Who authorized this? Where's the discussion on it? Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 12:34, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sort of ambivalent about the change myself. You may want to check the page history on WP:CFDW and see who put the change there. It was listed as a speedy move (which bypasses all discussion) because it was classified as a trivial capitalization change, but personally, I think it merited at least some discussion. Anyway, I think the reasoning behind this move is that Negro league baseball is a categorization, not a proper noun. There was no official "Negro League" in the same sense that there is a named organization called "Major League Baseball". Semantic, I know. But Wikipedia is rather adverse to capitalization for some reason, and someone figured the capitalization of "League" wasn't justified in this instance. --Cyde Weys 15:44, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

CydeBot[edit]

Hi I'm an Admin on Arabic wikipedia and there was a discussion about using a bot to generate a list of article for speedy deletions. Can you point me out to the tools you use to operate your bot to do this.

Thanks in advance

--Histolo2 (talk) 10:15, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, so you have a category of items up for speedy deletion and you want to turn them into a list? It's pretty easy. I wrote that functionality for pyWikipediaBot, so it won't require any custom coding. You'll need to get the framework (you'll probably want to find a bot operator on the Arabic Wikipedia who has a GNU/Linux server handy), and then add a line to crontab to regularly update the list. It would look something like this:

python /path/to/pywikipediabot/category.py listify -from:'Name of speedy deletion category' -to:'Name of article to put list on' -overwrite

Apologies if that isn't exactly correct; my server is actually down at the moment, so I can't tell you if this is exactly how I'm doing it, but I'll update you on that later. If you can't find anyone with a GNU/Linux server, it's possible to run this on a Windows desktop, but there are some caveats:

  1. The desktop would need to be online 24/7.
  2. You'd have to download and install Python for Windows. Granted, it is free; I just don't know how good it is.
  3. You'll need some way of scheduling a task to run regularly. On GNU/Linux it's really easy; just use crontab. On Windows, you'll need to use something else. There must be a Free cron-like replacement for Windows that runs as a Windows service; I just don't know what it is.

Tv neilsen cydebot edits[edit]

A series of edits made by cydebot refer to OTRS ticket #2008091610055854. Hmm, what's this about?--Knulclunk (talk) 01:53, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nielsen Media Research is claiming that their regional categorization system is a creative, proprietary work, and that we are infringing on it. They sent us a DMCA takedown notice and we have decided not to fight it. --Cyde Weys 01:57, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cyde, while a DCMA notice is one thing, why on earth would we delete the templates? Why not just reformat them; after all, Neilsen can hardly copyright a list of stations in an urban area. --Ckatzchatspy 02:31, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to have to refer you to Jredmond or MBisanz on this one. But I suspect the reason is because the templates themselves were using Nielsen's proprietary regions. If the template is "all stations in this media market", and that classification is proprietary, then it all has to go. Starting from the top-down we could reorganize television articles on, say, a state basis. --Cyde Weys 02:35, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In my opinion, if you don't want us to mention the market's rankings, so be it. If even naming the markets they are in has become forbidden, I have a feeling a MASSIVE revision spree is at hand, which would only list stations only by their cities of license and ban mentioning the coverage area (which would make articles for stations such as XETV in Tijuana pretty messy). I have a feeling the folks at WP:TVS (including me) are not happy campers. -- azumanga (talk) 02:38, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's ridiculous for Neilsen to make such a claim, IMHO. I'd love to see it get thrown out of court. But whatever. Anyway, the templates and references to them are being deleted, but I think the templates' talk pages are being left intact. Was that intentional? —mjb (talk) 03:26, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can we see the DMCA notice, or the OTRS ticket? Just curious...--Knulclunk (talk) 04:04, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You may want to see and comment at the discussion here.--Jorfer (talk) 22:04, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

According to Bastique, "the list of markets in the United States by Neilsen rank on the original article" is the only thing Nielsen complained about. Can you explain why you deleted the templates? Thank you. --NE2 15:00, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The discussion was started when the OTRS ticket first came in. The discussion included Bastique and the above-mentioned other two individuals. Bastique left shortly thereafter. After he left, the conversation turned to what other cleanup was required, and the general consensus was that the templates and the categories had to go as well because they contained the same information, just arranged in a different format. Please stop trying to paint this as some sort of rogue/unilateral deletion by me. I wasn't even around for the discussion; all I did was implement the result of it because I was the first person everyone thought of when the topics of category deletion and template deletion came up. --Cyde Weys 18:41, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the clarification. --NE2 19:23, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Category changes without a clear consensus[edit]

No one on the project pages which this affects have been told about the so called discussion (Such as here[3]). Really it's only an CfD with no real consensus and should be undone with the CfD relisted and those project notified. Bidgee (talk) 05:28, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Correct, this was a speedy rename which was actually contrary to a CfD in May, which rejected the changes. See Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2008_May_13. Orderinchaos 05:41, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
[edit conflict] Just to clarify, your bot did a speedy CfR (with incorrect "per CfD" edit summary, but that's not the point) on protected areas of/in Australia. This was based upon an illogical, inapplicable, nonexistent convention, and should never have been done through speedy channels. We'd appreciate it if you'd run a reversion for us. Thanks very much - appreciated. And thanks for letting us know re the original changes. Orderinchaos 20:55, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks to Cyde for letting me know about this discussion—no one else had told me anything about it. There was some discussion on the speedy rename page about whether or not these were speediable; those who initially questioned it said they made several inquiries to WikiProjects and then got back to us about 5 days later and said that due to the non-responses they received it was probably OK to rename them via speedy, so I'm not sure where the communication broke down there. Good Ol’factory (talk) 03:29, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cydebot[edit]

Is there some sort of bug that makes the bot unable to delete a category when it has a talk page? This is not a new issue with the rewrite; I've noticed before that some aren't deleted and the only potential reason I can come up with is they are the ones that have talk pages. Good Ol’factory (talk) 03:32, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oooh, good eye. I hadn't noticed this. I'll have to do some testing and get back to you on that, but yes, at first glance, it definitely looks like this could be the reason. --Cyde Weys 03:34, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed this a long time ago, but thought it was a feature, so I didn't say anything. Whoops. --Kbdank71 19:58, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I cannot confirm this bug? I just ran a test and Cydebot successfully deleted both the category page and its talk page. I'm going to guess that there was some error in the revision of the PyWikipediaBot framework I was using, which I hadn't updated in many months. In preparation for the recent BFRA, however, I rewrote all of the code and got the latest version from SVN, and this problem seems to have disappeared. If you do notice it crop up again please let me know. It may be triggered by some condition more specific than a category talk page existing that my test did not duplicate. --Cyde Weys 20:42, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Don't know if it helps, but I noticed that the bot will move the talk page to the correct target, but not delete the redirect. Maybe that's why...? I'll keep an eye on it just in case. --Kbdank71 20:46, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Meaning, I notice it on renames. Can't recall if it happens on plain old deletes. --User:Kbdank71 20:48, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If you look at Cydebot's latest deletions, you'll see that it didn't seem to have any problem deleting the talk page redirect during a category move. If the problem does still exist, it requires some additional condition. --Cyde Weys 20:49, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for looking into this, Cyde. I'll let you know too if I see it happening still. Good Ol’factory (talk) 20:49, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ahah! I figured it out! It turns out this was occurring on category removal, not category renaming. It looks like someone (I have no idea who but it could've easily been me) added the appropriate code to delete the talk page to the move robot but not to the remove robot. I've rectified the omission and committed the fix to the PyWikipediaBot source repository. Now Cydebot really has no outstanding bugs. --Cyde Weys 02:40, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Are you saying you wanted more whiz bang and drama? I could figure out how to manufacture some for fun. ;) Just kidding. Less fuss to get to a good solution is a good thing, but I know how you feel. - Taxman Talk 20:53, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

USS Nevada (BB-36)
So are you wondering why this is here yet? Well, I just wanted to thank you for this message. You started me on the way to becoming a constructive contributor to this encyclopedia, and now I have gotten USS Nevada (BB-36) through a FAC! Thanks for the help, even if it was a long time ago. Cheers!

Congratulations on the Featured Article! I'm glad that things turned out well. And I'm touched that you remembered this after so long. It's good to know not all of my advice is useless :-P Cyde Weys 15:18, 20 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! And...well, it is hard to forget that block I got from you. :) Cheers! —Ed 17 for President Vote for Ed 02:40, 27 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pseudoscience in musical instrument classification[edit]

Good luck getting rid of the "physics"-based classification system from musical instrument classification. I tried once already, and was told (basically) that a PhD in ethnomusicology doesn't qualify me to determine notability....Rikyu (talk) 00:18, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

So I take it you've never heard of it either? Seeing as how it lacks references, I really don't see how it belongs in articles. --Cyde Weys 19:35, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, and organology is one of my specialities. I found only one paper on the subject, by the person named in the article, and not in a music-related journal. No references to that one paper. I have nothing against the scheme, which has some charm, but devoting this much space to one person's idiosyncratic approaches gives it much more prominence than it really has in the real world. Most people working with musical instrument classification use Sachs-Hornbostel; other schemes are of intellectual curiosity, but rarely if ever used for actual work. In my experience. Rikyu (talk) 22:31, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just wondering, but do you still need Category:Test2? It just popped up in CAT:SD with a {{db-test}} on it, and figured it'd be best to ask here before deleting it. Cheers. lifebaka++ 02:02, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User Undoing Cydebot Edits[edit]

Hi, got a heads up for you. A month or so ago, Cydebot made numerous edits to TV Station articles with the summary: "Removing TV region templates per DMCA Takedown Notice from Nielsen Media Research, OTRS ticket #2008091610055854. "

Today, User:66.102.80.212 has been going through and undoing those edits. As I am not sure of the status of the OTRS ticket, I don't want to go blindly reverting the IP's edits, in case the reason is no longer applicable. I thought I'd drop you a note though, in case this is incorrect. Thanks! ArakunemTalk 17:25, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

IP address undoing your bot edits[edit]

See this long list of undos related to your "Removing TV region templates per DMCA Takedown Notice from Nielsen Media Research, OTRS ticket #2008091610055854" bot edits. Is the takedown notice no longer in effect, or should these edits be reverted and the IP warned? OhNoitsJamie Talk 17:28, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The template that is being re-added to the articles is not the same one that was removed. It has been recreated since the deletion, presumably without the copyright-infringing content. I just wish the non-logged-in user had picked a better edit summary. --Cyde Weys 03:19, 26 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia announces launch of new Valued pictures project[edit]

The project goes live for nominations on 1 December 2008 at 0:00 UTC[edit]

This Wikipedia Valued pictures project sets out to identify and encourage users' efforts in providing valuable images of high encyclopedic value, and to build up a resource for editors from other Wikimedia projects seeking such educational images for use online. The project also provides recognition to contributors who have made an effort to contribute enyclopedic images of difficult subjects which are very hard or nigh on impossible to obtain. The project will run alongside the existing Wikipedia Featured pictures and Picture peer review projects.

Please visit Valued picture candidates to nominate an image, or to help review the nominations. Anyone with an account on Wikipedia is welcome to nominate images, and also to take part in the open review process.

The Wikipedia valued picture project has opened for nominations. Please feel free to nominate an image at WP:VPC today!

A Wikipedia admin trolling on FreeNode IRC?[edit]

Is it really appropriate for you to be trolling on Freenode? Granted, your non sequiturs make it appear that you're drunk, but perhaps you should step away from the computer.

<Snip a bunch of IRC channel logs>

Yeah, I really have no idea what you're talking about. While I have been known to hang out in the ##astronomy channel on FreeNode, I've never heard of one "Lando_SpacePimp", and I'm certainly not him. He's just some random troll on the channel, apparently. All of the channel admins mentioned in the chat logs that you pasted can vouch for me as a member in good standing of the channel, and will confirm that I am not him.

So may I ask where you got this silly notion that I'm Lando_SpacePimp? And did you really think this was the best way to address it? --Cyde Weys 16:10, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Subcats[edit]

He suggested to ask you if your bot can help. If you (and/or it) can help, it would be appreciated. - jc37 05:40, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
