Jacobo Árbenz

Hello, Coemgenus - I have Jacobo Árbenz on my watchlist (having copy-edited the article in October 2016 – see GOCE banner on talk page), and I was just looking at your edits. I see you've added commas after initial prepositional phrases, which I probably deliberately either left out or removed. I feel a comma is not needed unless the phrase is long (more than four or five words) or is necessary to avoid confusion or ambiguity. In normal speech, very few native speakers of English pause after an initial prepositional phrase, particularly a short one. I looked through the Chicago Manual of Style on-line and found only this post by an Associate Member [1]. (I don't have access to other style guides.) Of course, I do not remove all commas from initial phrases, but I agree with this line: "Most other standard sources I've used over the years seem to agree that only short (i.e five words or under) *prepositional phrases* can go without the comma". I've checked with the Lead Coordinator for the WP Guild of Copy Editors for 2016, Jonesey95, who has informed me that either style (with or without the comma after short initial prepositional phrases) is acceptable, but that the article should be consistent. I know some writers, particularly speakers of British English, prefer the comma, but I think it unnecessarily slows down the pace of reading, and I think unnecessary commas are old-fashioned. I'm not going to get into an argument, and certainly not an edit war, and I won't revert your edits – I know it is merely a style choice – I'm just trying to persuade you to the modern view, and to consider not adding commas when you come across an article with no comma after a short initial prepositional phrase, unless most of the phrases in the article already have a comma, and you're editing for consistency. @Corrine: I think it reads better with them, but I don't feel particularly strongly about it. I didn't add them everywhere I could have, but I've gotten dinged here in the past for not having them, so I thought it was standard. If you want to revert, that's fine, it won't affect my GA review. March 2017 WikiCup newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. It would have been 5 points, but when a late entrant was permitted to join the contest in February, a promise was made that his inclusion would not result in the exclusion of any other competitor. To achieve this, the six entrants that had the lowest positive score of 4 points have been added to the 64 people who otherwise would have qualified. As a result, some of the groups have nine contestants rather than eight. Our top four scorers in round 1 were:

• Cas Liber, last year's winner, led the field with two featured articles on birds and a total score of 674.
• Iry-Hor, a WikiCup newcomer, came next with a featured article, a good article and a tally of 282 bonus points for a score of 517. All these points came from the article Nyuserre Ini, an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh,
• 1989, another WikiCup newcomer, was in joint third place at 240. 1989 has claimed points for two featured lists and one good article relating to anime and comedy series, all of which were awarded bonus points.
• Peacemaker67 shared third place with five good articles and thirteen good article reviews, mostly on naval vessels. He is also new to the competition.

The largest number of DYKs have been submitted by Vivvt and The C of E, who each claimed for seven, and MBlaze Lightning achieved eight articles at ITN. Carbrera and Peacemaker67 each claimed for five GAs and Krishna Chaitanya Velaga was well out in front for GARs, having reviewed 32. No featured pictures, featured topics or good topics yet, but we have achieved three featured articles and a splendid total of fifty good articles.

So, on to the second round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

FA process

After seeing the discussion at the WikiCup talk page, I have a question for you. My content creation centers around Canadian football biographies. Canadian football is a relatively underappreciated support. It has its fan base, but the Canadian Football League is strictly secondary to the National Football League. The lack of free images is a real issue. I search for them constantly, but it's a miracle when I find even one shot of a player that is usable. Is it possible to get an article to FA without images if none are available? The criteria makes it seem like the answer is "no", but I wanted to verify. ~ Rob₁₃^Talk 19:51, 1 March 2017 (UTC)

BU Rob13, if there is really nothing available, I suppose it would be possible. For living players, you may be able to find amateur photos with creative commons licenses. For deceased players, you could look into making fair use of a copyrighted image. I'm definitely not an image expert--if you look at FAC and see who does image reviews there, they might have more useful advice for you. But speaking for myself, I wouldn't oppose a nomination just because there is no picture of the person it's about. --Coemgenus (talk) 19:58, 1 March 2017 (UTC)

The big problem is that many players I write about played from the 1960s to 2000s, which is just old enough that there isn't anything on the internet under a CC license but just new enough that they aren't yet deceased (not that I'm rooting for that just to get an FA credit). I'm a permissions agent with OTRS and handle a good deal of stuff regarding the file namespace, so I'm sadly familiar with how restrictive copyright and even fair use can be. I'm currently reaching out to some professional photographers to see if they're willing to make a low resolution version of certain images available, but that's an uphill battle. Yeah, after I wrote that I checked out your userpage and realized you probably know a lot more about image policy than I do! Have you considered reaching out to the players themselves? I've thought of doing that myself on some articles, and I imagine that it might be hard to get a response, especially from the more famous guys, but that could be a way to get a good quality photo owned by someone released into CC. Other than that, I've got nothing. Sorry not to be more helpful, but as I said, I'd argue that it's not disqualifying not to have a photo where there's no reasonable way to get one, and I'll be glad to say so at any FA nomination. --Coemgenus (talk) 20:12, 1 March 2017 (UTC)

Well, that's something. I've reached out to players a handful of times. Typically, I get a single response saying "Yeah, you can use photos of me" and then nothing back after they realize it's a bit of a process to find the author and get them to release it. These days, I try to go straight to photographers. I currently emailed one who's been a professional photographer covering the CFL (among other things) for a good 40+ years. If I can convince him to release low resolution versions of images for a few select articles, it would be a real boon. ~ Rob₁₃^Talk 21:53, 1 March 2017 (UTC)

FAC William Pūnohu White

Hello, I don't know if you came across Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/William Pūnohu White/archive1. It was closed today because of no traffic and only 1 review after a month. The quality of the article is FAC material in my opinion. I did not ask anybody (except two users) in the initial run to review it since I was trusting that it will receive reviews. Now I am asking a couple of people here and there to see if there is enough interest to renominate it again as recommended by the closing admin. I will only go ahead and renominate it once I find a few people who wants to give it a review. Please let me know if you are interested. The tweeking of words here and there in the first paragraph has (IMO) rendered it a mish-mash that just seems worse every-time I look at it. I am not quite sure how to say it but It wanders back and forth and clears its throat several times.
