Chester A. Arthur article[edit]

I have been attempting to make improvements on the Chester A. Arthur article. I have added book sources and trying to clean up the references, currently a mess. I plan to go through the Reeves source to find page references. Just wanted to let you know changes have been made on the Chester A. Arthur biographical article. I know you have interest in this article. If you want, you can give some direction where the article needs to go next. Thanks. Cmguy777 (talk) 02:25, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree on the rewrite. My current purpose is to clean up the article and add any pertinent sections that are covered with valid sources. I added a section

on his expedition in Yellowstone and a Legacy section. Arthur also remodeled the White House by Louis Comfort Tiffany. There was no such thing as historical preservation during the 19th Century, according to Karabell. Cmguy777 (talk) 04:14, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mainly in this case because the Executive Mansion (as it was more commonly called then) was badly built, badly maintained, almost burned to the ground, and was nearly falling down before it was effectively rebuilt under Truman.--Wehwalt (talk) 12:49, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you let me take the first crack at it, I plan to invite some comments from interested editors before the GA application. I find the "all hands on deck" approach to editing, like what goes on in Lincoln, to be detrimental to good writing. It seems to work better when one editor builds a good base, then others collaborate to build up from there. But that's just one man's opinion. --Coemgenus 12:56, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Feel free, Coemgenus, for a complete rewrite on the article. I am not against a main editor for the Arthur article as long as input and opinions from other editors are allowed. I agree on starting on a good base issue. The current article needs structure and a foundation. I would need to get Arthur's biography book and the Doenecke book on Garfield's and Arthur's presidency. I believe the Reeve's source edits are good. I plan to go through the article to clean up sources or put unsourced material in the talk page. Cmguy777 (talk) 19:14, 15 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry, I won't try to own it. Other editors' additions will be welcome, even encouraged, on the road to GA and FA. I'm half-way through Reeves. Karabell is next, and Doenecke is coming in the mail soon. --Coemgenus 19:19, 15 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's good. On second thought, I will keep unsourced material in the article until the rewrite, since signifigant portions of the Arthur article would be missing. Cmguy777 (talk) 19:21, 15 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Coemgenus. I have modified and cleaned up the sources and references in the Chester A. Arthur article. I have attempted to give the article some framework. I have added a legacy and memorials section in addition to a section on Arthur's expedition to Yellowstone Park. I plan on adding a section on Arthur's (Tiffany's) remodeling the White House using the information already in the article. If you plan on starting with a blank slate on the rewrite and want to erase everything, that is fine also, go for it. Cmguy777 (talk) 02:51, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've been drafting it in userspace. --Coemgenus (talk) 03:15, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good. I was thinking the Social and personal life section needs to be incorporated into the article rather then a seperate section. Also, the sources in the current article can be used in the rewrite. That way there would be additional references in the article. Cmguy777 (talk) 03:43, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The early life and early carreer can be incorporated into the article, I believe. Did you want to finish the whole CAA article rewrite first or put part of the rewrite into the article? Cmguy777 (talk) 23:15, 23 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I typically finish the whole thing, then paste it. I'm done reading Reeves and Karabell, starting on Howe and have Doenecke next. --Coemgenus (talk) 10:34, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK. I believe Doenecke did a real good research on Arthur's Presidency. Cmguy777 (talk) 15:47, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'll stop editing until the rewrite. I just had an issue with the block quotes. You are correct. I am trying to patch up a dam that has already been broken. Thanks. Cmguy777 (talk) 23:35, 25 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I was not disagreeing with the content of the block quotes, just the format. If someone actually predicted Garfield's presidency, that is signifigant. If you like, Coemgenus, I can attempt to undo my last two edits in order to return to original format, or is the best thing to keep the CAA article as is until rewrite? Cmguy777 (talk) 23:59, 25 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK. I'll just keep the article the way it is now, until the rewrite. Arthur really is the forgotten President. I looked up CAA articles on American Heritage Magazine archives and found not one that specifically concerned Arthur. I did find one on Johnson Whittaker, the African American cadet, at West Point, that does state that Arthur overturned Whittaker's court-martial. The Whittaker case got allot of attention during Arthur's presidency. Interestingly, I can find no place where Arthur mentioned African American civil rights in his State of the Union Addresses. Cmguy777 (talk) 00:26, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I recently obtained the Karabell and Doenecke books. I believe the centerpieces for Arthur's Presidency needs to be Civil Service and Naval Reform and Modernization. Garfield's Sec. Hunt got the ball rolling in improving the Navy and Arthur's Sec. Chandler kept on reforming. Doenechke does a really good job explaining the Naval reform and modernization. I am hoping CAA can get GA and FA status. Cmguy777 (talk) 23:08, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Do you, Coemgenus, have an estimated time for completing the CAA rewrite? Cmguy777 (talk) 18:24, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In the interest of disclosure I have started a rewrite on Chester A. Arthur's presidency. This was done to get a better understanding of Arthur's presidency and because I like to keep in practice writing on Wikipedia. Cmguy777sandbox Arthur's Presidency My view is that the Doenecke, Reeves, and Karabell books can give the Arthur article real polish. I remain in deferment to your rewrite, Coemgenus, however, the sandbox helps keep my attention occupied. Cmguy777 (talk) 23:47, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, go for it. I had a lot of real-life concerns that limited my editing, but I should have more time this week. --Coemgenus (talk) 14:15, 2 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Wikipedia editors, including myself, do have private lives. I have almost completed the Arthur's Presidency section up to Domestic Policies. I have tended to focus on the Civil Rights, the Surplus, Tariff, and Reciprical Trade. President Arthur was ahead of his time by implementing reciprocal trade policy in order to expand America's economy. Cmguy777 (talk) 16:23, 3 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Section break 01[edit]

Good addition on the Conkling machine in your CAA sandbox, Coemgenus! I have completed a segment on President Arthur's Civil Rights section. President Arthur's Civil Rights section I would like to put in the article, however, if you would accept. I have not edited the article since June 25, approximately ten days. Would you consider incorporating this Civil Rights section into your rewrite? Cmguy777 (talk) 17:38, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have obtained a copy of Reeves' book; a very high quality biography on Arthur. I can use more of Reeves book on Civil Rights section. Cmguy777 (talk) 19:02, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Comegenus. I have added relevant information from the Reeves book into the Civil Rights section for the CAA article. I believe this accurately reflects President Arthur's actions and views on Civil Rights . Cmguy777 (talk) 15:41, 7 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Comegenus. I wanted to add ASAP, since I believe the current Civil Rights section needs immediate attention in the CAA article. However, I needed to add a section on the 1882 Immigration law and his appointments of African Americans to Federal Office. I believe his support of the Readjuster Party, related to Reconstruction and Civil Rights, can be a seperate section. Cmguy777 (talk) 23:05, 7 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I added a section on the Immigration Acts (1882, 1885) and information on President Arthur's appointment of African Americans. The modified and improved Civil Rights section is ready to go into the CAA article. Cmguy777 (talk) 17:03, 8 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I found another biography of Chester A. Arthur written by George Frederick Howe published in 1934. The book, in my opinion, Chester A. Arthur A Quarter-Century of Machine Politics, gives a remarkably refreshing and well researched view of Arthur as President and goes into subject areas of Arthur's personal life, the Star Route case trials, and tariff revision. Cmguy777 (talk) 02:21, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just a note; Howe put Arthur's birth date as October 5, 1830. Cmguy777 (talk) 02:25, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I read Howe and Reeves explained the discrepancy. --Coemgenus (talk) 05:20, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That is good. Feel free to tweak as you feel relevant in the Presidency section. The Civil Rights section was the one I completed to put in the article ASAP. I was unaware that President Arthur was the first President to establish immigration laws. Arthur overturning Whittacker's courtmarshal gives signifigant insight into his civil rights policy, in my opinion. I believe that reader's understanding there is debate over Arthur's civil rights policy among historians is important. Cmguy777 (talk) 16:03, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Coemgenus. Is there any estimated time on completing the rewrite? I have returned books to libraries and currently limited in working on my sandbox. The CAA article rewrite is starting to take structure. Cmguy777 (talk) 01:07, 14 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The Star Route scandal had to do with rapid Westward expansion and may have started under President Andrew Johnson and continued throughout President Arthur. Interstingly no one was convicted. I would not say I am a complete authority on the Star Routes cases, but the New York Times really covered the trials and scandal, particularly under President Arthur. The two trials did shut down the corruption. Howe was a really good source for the Star Route trials. I got allot of information from Howe. I can work on the Star Route article. That would be a good idea. The Arthur article is looking good. I did not know much concerning President Arthur before doing the sandbox. In my opinion, he was a good President, level headed and independant. Cmguy777 (talk) 20:04, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I was wondering if it would be good to put a major upcoming edit change announcement in the CAA article. That way editors and/or readers would be warned. Cmguy777 (talk) 03:19, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That is fine. I just remember a notice was put in the Ulysses S. Grant article that there was an upcoming major edit or pending change when the Civil War section was modified. Cmguy777 (talk) 15:43, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That article looks good and much improved! Good narration Comengenus! Everything fits together and is much more academic looking! Cmguy777 (talk) 01:48, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I guess you can say Arthur's article has been reformed. Good job Coemgenus!

Eisenhower[edit]

I am beginning an image review, and have initiated a section on the talk p. I'm going to start at the beginning and go through in the order of appearance. FYI, this may end up on a collision course with Gwillhickers, who added stamps plus a section devoted to them back in January. But I will address that at the end so it will be in proper context of an overall image review. I have notified Brad. Carmarg4 (talk) 13:04, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have completed an image review here. I have moved everything to the talk page to reduce overcrowding and maintain significance per WP:image. No comments yet but it's very early. Carmarg4 (talk) 19:48, 7 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Star Route Scandal[edit]

Hello Coemgenus. I made an effort at improving and expanding the Star route scandal article. I need to get further source material to give more context and information. Cmguy777 (talk) 16:29, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Coemgenus. There is an journal article by Klotsche, The Star Route Cases that I need to get. What I wrote was just a basic frame work. I am trying to use JSTOR, however, seems like I have to be affiliated with an organization. I am not sure how JSTOR works. I believe the article can be much longer since the scandal may have involved five presidential administrations presidents: Grant; Hayes; Garfield; Arthur; and Cleveland. Arthur did shut down the Star Route scandal, however, Cleveland may have had something to do with further investigations or prosecutions. Cmguy777 (talk) 15:42, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Chester A. Arthur GA[edit]

I put the GA review in because I believed you wrote most of the article, although I had input. However, I can remove my GA review and put concerns in the talk page of Chester A. Arthur. Cmguy777 (talk) 20:45, 29 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Cmguy777 has been removed as a reviewer for the article. Cmguy777 (talk) 20:54, 29 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As I look over the article other concerns come to mind. Yes. Please reset the GA review to start out fresh. Thanks. Cmguy777 (talk) 20:59, 29 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry concerning the review. Please destroy the first one and make a new one. That would be good. Cmguy777 (talk) 23:44, 29 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Is someone reviewing the article? Cmguy777 (talk) 23:44, 29 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Coemgenus. The GA article nomination page stated someone was reviewing the article. I am not sure that is accurate, if nobody has reviewed the article. Cmguy777 (talk) 23:58, 29 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That is good. For future reference I will plan on not reviewing articles I have had limited input in making. Cmguy777 (talk) 16:01, 30 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations Coemgenus on Chester A. Arthur article receiving the GA status!Cmguy777 (talk) 04:05, 21 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Declaration of Independence[edit]

I see you are considering jumping into the Declaration of Independence. The article is really pretty close to GA standards, so it would be a pretty quick GA for you. Then you can move on to FA.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 04:32, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'll restart the clock and check back in on the article 7 days from now.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 12:28, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Coemgenus. I noticed there were citations missing. I can attempt to find the sources. Rjensen is a resourceful editor and may have access to good sources for the unreferenced citations. Cmguy777 (talk) 19:15, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I added a 1911 State Department source into the article. My view is that the State Department must have had access to reliable sources. The federal source stated that John Hancock signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. This in my opinion makes the Declaration a legal document on July 4. My concern was that the article may include some sort of doubt as to the authentic date of the American Independence. Cmguy777 (talk) 05:27, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Gatoclass (talk) 00:03, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings. I see that you are reviewing the Edward Millen article that User:Frickeg nominated. I'm also reviewing an article that Frickeg nominated: John Neild. Frickeg's a great writer and a hard worker, but in my review I found that he had inadvertently closely paraphrased one of the sources, Rutledge's Australian Dictionary of Biography. Close paraphrase is a tricky matter, and it's sometimes difficult to know if an article has a problem or not... but a number of GA reviewers have gotten in hot water for passing nominations that turned out to have legal implications for Wikipedia. So be sure to check Frickeg's prose against Rutledge, to make sure there's not a problem. If you need help, User:Moonriddengirl is our local copyvio and close-paraphrase expert – she's who I turned to.

Just to emphasize, I'm sure Frickeg didn't do anything malicious, and there might not be a problem at all in Edward Millen; I just don't know, so I thought I'd give you a head's up. All the best, – Quadell (talk) 17:59, 20 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

French Republican Calendar[edit]

Why the heck did you undo my edit? All Calendar days were linked EXCEPT orange. for that reason I linked it, because, as I said in my edit summary: I see no obvious reason not to link it. Then you undo my edit and thereby remove the link to orange (fruit), leaving the following edit summary: "they're all linked so people can read about each one without typing it in the search box." Can you explain that? Or is the sole explanation look before you leap? Steinbach (talk) 08:52, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Inauguration stubs[edit]

Just found out there's an article on the Inauguration of Chester A. Arthur. It's one of many presidential inauguration stubs accessible through {{US inaugurations}}. A barnstar for you![edit]

The Special Barnstar
For allowing my TFA nom to run when yours had more points, I award you this barnstar with my thanks. An article on a U.S. President is bound to be difficult to bring to FA status, and it deserves to be featured on the home page. Your willingness to defer that gratification so I could keep election day for Governor of Kentucky makes you a cool Wikipedian. Thanks!
