Arbitrary break[edit]

First of all, thanks for your reasonable reply. Here is why I call him a troll:

  • He keeps saying he came in response to a rfc, but also demonstrates no knowledge or interest in beer.

My take: he writes mostly about physics. If I were looking through the rfcs and saw one for physics, I wouldn't reply to it because it is a subject that I know nothing about and therefore would be in no valid position to comment.

  • He immediately said "include BJCP. I am new here and come in response to the RFC and see no sign of any real consensus in the discussion above. I have had a look at the BJCP site and although it is not perfect it is not, in my opinion, so bad that it should not be linked to."

My take: since he has never showed any knowledge of beer, how does he know that "although it is not perfect it is not, in my opinion, so bad that it should not be linked to."?

  • Despite being told that it is full of errors/flaws/whatever, he keeps supporting it.

My take: despite the fact that he reveals no interest or knowledge in beer, people who do know beer tell him of the flaws, yet he continues to say they are minor (how does he know that?) and that he continues to support it.

  • Yes, his speech is mostly civil and polite, but his actions are not.

My take: I gave a valid reason for the temporary removal of the bjcp link, yet he reverted it. Immediately before announcing that I was going to remove it, he and I had discussed the text that should go with the link. So he was aware that an explanation had been agreed on. Why then did he revert it? Why did he accuse me of edit warring when that was what he was doing?

  • When we had discussed the text, I basically used your suggestion but with more direct language. He said none of that was necessary, only to say it was a home-brewing club.

My take: the whole history of his participation here has been single-minded in favour of the link regardless of the arguments or suggestions put forward. For someone who has little to no knowledge of the subject, he is unrealistically insistent on inclusion of the link. He does not use reason or emotion to make his case, he simply says: it doesn't matter, the link should go in.

  • And finally: he says he came in response to a rfc. He did that over a month ago. Why is he still here?

My take: if he only came in response to the rfc, he would not have stayed so long. Clearly, he has another agenda.

Fair enough? As I have told you in the past, I (and Ron Pattinson) have been personally attacked and harassed by Goethean and various trolls. The attacks by Goethean lasted two years and no administrator ever stepped in. It became crystal clear to me that WP does not always live by its own rules and that sometimes, editors must protect themselves because, despite the rules, WP will not. It was clear that Lou Pepe and friends were genuine trolls because of their language. Martin may speak like a gentleman, but his actions clearly lack good faith and npov. Spammer[edit]

Please take a look at the Hoegaarden brewery article. There seems to be a spammer with the name Betty Taylor who is putting in links to a site under the title "Dietary Information." S/he has violated 3rr on that article. She has put these links in many beer articles. Other editors have complained about her/him as well. I hope you can do something about this. Thanks. In my defence I have never once violated 3RR - Mikebe is simply lying about this. You can easily verify this. I have added dietary and product information i.e. ingredient listings/nutritional information/vegetarian & coeliac suitability to articles about beers and the breweries. So far only one user other than Mikebe has objected to me adding this information and we reached a compromise to incorporate it into a pre-existing section. Mikebe has made no attempt to explain why the information I have added is irrelevant or come to a compromise and just keeps removing it. This in no way constitutes 'reaching a consensus'. Many articles about companies that produce consumables often include dietary/product/nutritional information about their products so I don't see why it is unreasonable to add it to a brewer article. In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, look at our approval by the Chapters Committee, develop ideas for chapter projects at museums and libraries throughout our region, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects (see the November meeting's minutes and the December mini-meetup's minutes).

We'll make preparations for our exciting museum photography Wikipedia Loves Art! February bonanza (on Flickr, on Facebook) with Shelley from the Brooklyn Museum and Alex from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

We'll also be collecting folks to join our little Wikipedia Takes the Subway adventure which will be held the day after the meeting.

In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and generally enjoy ourselves and kick back.

I wanted to say thank you for the effort you put into mediating the debate several weeks ago in Talk:Beer style. My participation was very limited due to time constraints and because it would have caused me more stress than it was worth, but I was peeking in on it from time to time and have noted that your contributions were invaluable in maintaining some degree of civility and resolution. At least for now, it seems; it appears the main opponents of the BJCP link have continued ranting on it. Not everyone in favor of BJCP has acted in a civil, exemplary manner either (you dealt with some of the offenders yourself), though I can't help wondering to what degree the behavior of the BJCP opponents has made the temptation to break the rules too much to resist by people who would otherwise be well-behaved contributors (I was getting a little tempted myself, which is one reason I had to step away from that discussion). So... I am on Wikipedia now. I realized how many times I signed into it to look up random stuff when I didn't want to bother taking out Robbins or Harrison's or other things. It's beautiful that I'm doing this when I should be studying for my exam. Alas, it seems like there are entirely too many things I want to do at once. Now I see why you're addicted to this. I think I'm going to work on cholesterol first as it pretty much has a lot going for it, and I do know a lot about cholesterol. Now the challenge is to get myself to study until the test is over. Hey again. I was working on the cholesterol page yesterday and I was having problems with the references. They're kind of confusing because I think I probably replaced someone else's citation. But I didn't delete any of the other citations... so as I said I'm confused:) Also... I forgot how hard it was to edit stuff without destroying everything that was written before you. But it was really fun. I forgot how much I like editing. I re-did the function section. I guess no one's edited it back (and it's been almost 24 hours, so it might be okay. Your redirect of Enzyme induction and inhibition[edit]

A long time ago, you redirected enzyme induction and inhibition to enzyme inhibitor.

However, enzyme inhibition at the gene expression level is not covered in enzyme inhibitor, and the induction and inhibition article is meant to discuss enzyme regulation at the gene expression level, especially in the context of cytochrome P450 and pharmacology.

Hi ClockworkSoul, I just wanted to say that it was really nice to meet you, and hang out a bit during the day at NYU. It was terrific to talk to a Wikipedian who is so eloquent and personable... nerd maybe, (we all are) but nerdy, no. It was excellent indeed to give the 3rd talk after your 2nd in the Panel at the Conference. I was fortunate to have 2 such great talks to lead into mine. I do hope your wife is going to start feeling better soon, and that she managed OK without you there during the day. I did not come to NYU today, Sunday, because I was just too tired. OK, so any time you want to get into a museum free, any museum, but especially the AMNH, where I can get 4 other people in for free including movies and special exhibits, just let me know. I have a question for you on the topic which may or may not be appropriate for inclusion: In a rare steak, the red juices are mostly myoglobion, right? Is it safe to tell squamish people that myoglobin is not blood and that we should not call the juices blood? WHAT Wikis Take Manhattan is a scavenger hunt and free content photography contest aimed at illustrating Wikipedia and StreetsWiki articles covering sites and street features in Manhattan and across the five boroughs of New York City.

LAST YEAR'S EVENT

WINNINGS? The first prize winning team members will get Eye-Fi Share cards, which automatically upload photos from your camera to your computer and to sites like Flickr. And there will also be cool prizes for other top scorers.

WHEN The hunt will take place Saturday, October 10th from 1:00pm to 6:30pm, followed by prizes and celebration.

WHO All Wikipedians and non-Wikipedians are invited to participate in team of up to three (no special knowledge is required at all, just a digital camera and a love of the city). Bring a friend (or two)!

REGISTER The proper place to register your team is here. It's also perfectly possible to register on the day of when you get there, but it will be slightly easier for us if you register beforehand.

WHERE Participants can begin the hunt from either of two locations: one at Columbia University (at the sundial on college walk) and one at The Open Planning Project's fantastic new event space nestled between Chinatown and SoHo. Everyone will end at The Open Planning Project:

2010 WikiCup Signups Reconfirmation![edit]

To ensure that everyone who signed up is still committed to participating in the 2010 WikiCup, it is required that you remove your name from this list! By removing your name, you are not removing yourself from the WikiCup. This is simply a way for the judges to take note of who has not yet reconfirmed their participation. If you have not removed your name from that list by December 30th, 2009 (by 23:59 (UTC)) then your name will be removed from the WikiCup.

It's worth noting the rules have changed, likely after you signed up. The changes made thus far are:

  • Mainspace and/or portal edits will not be awarded points at all.
  • Did you know? articles (which were worth 5 points last year) will now be worth 10 points.
  • Good articles (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
  • Valued pictures will be now awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.
  • Featured lists (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
  • Featured portals (which were worth 25 points last year) will now be worth 35 points.
  • Featured articles (which were worth 50 points last year) will now be worth 100 points.
  • Featured topics (which were worth 10 points per article last year) will now be worth 15 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
  • Good topics (which were worth 5 points per article last year) will now be worth 10 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
  • In the news will still be awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.
