WikiCup 2011 September newsletter

We are on this year's home straight, with less than a month to go until the winner of the 2011 WikiCup will be decided. The fight for first place is currently being contested by Miyagawa (submissions), Hurricanehink (submissions) and Sp33dyphil (submissions), all of whom have over 200 points. This round has already seen multiple featured articles (1991 Atlantic hurricane season from Hurricanehink and Northrop YF-23 from Sp33dyphil) and a double-scoring featured list (Miyagawa's 1948 Summer Olympics medal table). The scores will likely increase far further before the end of the round on October 31 as everyone ups their pace. There is not much more to say- thoughts about next year's competition are welcome on the WikiCup talk page or the scoring talk page, and signups will open once a few things have been sorted out.

If you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! WikiCup 2011 October newsletter

The 2011 WikiCup is now over, and our new champion is Hurricanehink (submissions), who joins the exclusive club of the previous winners: Dreamafter (2007), jj137 (2008), Durova (2009) and Sturmvogel_66 (2010). The final standings were as follows:

Prizes for first, second, third and fourth will be awarded, as will prizes for all those who reached the final eight. Every participant who scored in the competition will receive a ribbon of participation. In addition to the prizes based on placement, the following special prizes will be awarded based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.

The Featured Article Award: Casliber (submissions), for his performance in round 2. Hurricanehink (submissions) matched the score, but Casliber won the tiebreaker.
The Good Article Award: Yellow Evan (submissions), for his performance in round 4.
The Featured List Award: Miyagawa (submissions), for his performance in round 4. PresN (submissions) matched the score, but Miyagawa won the tiebreaker.
The Recognised Topic Award (for good and featured topics): PresN (submissions), for his performance in round 3.
The Did You Know Award: The Bushranger (submissions), for his performance in round 1.
The In the News Award: Candlewicke (submissions), for his performance in round 1.
The Reviewer Award (for good article reviews): Wizardman (submissions), for his performance in round 3.

No prize was awarded for featured pictures, sounds or portals, as none were claimed throughout the competition. The awards will be handed out over the next few days. Congratulations to all our participants, and especially our winners; we've all had fun, and Wikipedia has benefitted massively from our content work.

Preparation for next year's WikiCup is ongoing. Interested parties are invited to sign up and participate in our straw polls. It's been a pleasure to work with you all this year, and, whoever's taking part in and running the competition in 2012, we hope to see you all in January! 2012 WikiCup

Hi, re Sopa

You've got a good way of condensing text, there was one significant thing I could see that needs attention,

The bill could make some proxy servers and the Tor project illegal and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) warned that websites Etsy, Flickr and Vimeo all seemed likely to shut down if the bill becomes law.

The actual part it summarizes is along the lines of user-content sites like youtube would be effected, and those notable sites mentioned would likely shut down, any ideas on a good way to incorporate it ? People quite like those kinds of sites. The bill would actually effect youtube, but mentioning the smaller but still notable sites was one way to sum up that part, because they would be shut down (according to the EEF). Any ideas ? Your absolutely right, I actually don't know which of them is most popular myself, but will support keeping it down to just a few of each kind (people add a lot of stuff there). The Tor project is a stand alone notable one however, it's rather unique and important to the paranoid, or should i say freedom of speech types, or whoever. It's an anonymity tool I believe. If you can work that in, it'd save a lot of trouble from unhelpful editing, but as it is, it's awesome. I'm trying to find a place where it's nice and settled so it can be unlocked and not suffer criticism(vandalism). Where have been huge improvements to it's stability so far, your text helps a lot. SOPA being as high-profile as it is, I doubt the semi-protection will be lifted any time soon. In my opinion, the current lead is too long and there's no need for more specific information. Also keep in mind that NPOV has to be followed, raising awareness of criticism of the bill is not the purpose here.--Res 2216 firestar 23:08, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Well there are two vectors of inevitability here, well one actually, as the constant improvement of the article is not a given, it has improved greatly according to many editors, but the other factor to consider is the public interest, it's on the downhill side of the curve now. So long as I continue to help, it's helpful to pinpoint the problems that readers are having with the article, and an unlocked article helps with that, to better guide editorial direction. Anyhow, I'll continue to search for all the information which editors and readers want to see and read, and help them get that information. As far as NPOV and raising awareness, that is absolutely not my editorial direction, I could care less, I just feel obliged to help editors is all, and seriously, it's more a reflection of who is editing the article and their motivations, I'm sure if Lamar was editing I'd have a great deal more good content to help him incorporate into the article, but if nobody is researching and nobody is adding the other side, what can you do? you have to summarize what is there. That's all you can do. The idea of fair, which I think would be better, can't be served by the structure of wiki policy. Even if you got the article to what you, firestar, think is Neutral, you're just writing in the sand anyway. Penyulap_talk 00:19, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi, I've posted the picture of the buck and sheltie dog on a rabbit page and there seems to be argument on the rabbits breed. You say Flemish_Giant and others are saying Continental giant. Is this your rabbit and is it definitely a Flemish Giant, how much did he weigh in the picture please. New deal for page patrollers

Hi ClassicSC,

In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.

Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.
