"Last Warning", "Vandalism", and Blocking?[edit]

Hello,

I checked in to Wiki to read about Snow Crabs and I found a note to my IP address saying that I'd been given a last warning and blocked from editing Wikipedia. Then message was from you, and said

"User talk:[my IP address] From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search

This is your last warning. The next time you vandalize a page, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. CambridgeBayWeather [edit]

Blocked

Due to your repeated vandalism you have been blocked from editing Wikipedia. CambridgeBayWeather

This is the discussion page for an anonymous user, identified by the user's numerical IP address. Some IP addresses change periodically, and may be shared by several users. If you are an anonymous user and feel that irrelevant comments have been directed at you, please create an account or log in to avoid future confusion with other anonymous users. If you're concerned with privacy, registering also hides your IP address. [RIR WHOIS lookup: America Europe Africa Asia-Pacific Latin America/Caribbeans]"

I don't know what this means, because I've never ever "vandalized" a page, and I've never even edited a page. A day or so ago, I did accidentally click the edit link on a page, but I didn't do anything excpt wonder what the heck happened and click "back" on my browser. I don't understand how this could block me from participating. I don't currently have an interest in participating, but I don't like being banned for something I didn't do. I also notice the date here is from long ago. I visit Wiki all the time and have not ever gotten this message before, or any warning. The warning and blocking appear to come within 5 minutes of each other, also, so that seems strange. Can you tell me what's going on? It's a little disconcerting to just be going about my private business researching things and suddenly see someone giving me warnings and bans. I also want to know if accidentally hitting an edit link will get you accused of "vandalism" here at Wikipedia.

I'm sorry if I'm doing this wrong, but it said to use this link instead of emailing, and I just want to handle this and clear my name and go back to normal. I see I'm supposed to put four tildes, but apart from that, I don't see what else to do.

Sincerely,

AnnElise AnnElise 11:55, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Italian people[edit]

The "Italic people" of the article are no less ethnically different then the later Greco-Latins native compared the Germanic invaders. By "ethnically different", Italic peoples were included. Prior to the Latinization of Italy by the Romans it's incorrect to talk about ethnically similar Italians. Miskin 14:27, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Link spam[edit]

Heh there,

I made some anonymous edits to a number of rave / free party / teknival / drugs related documents yesterday which I believe you've removed as link spam. Although I realise I went about it in the wrong way, I've since registered I'd like to talk about the possibility of maybe having some restored because I believe they were relevant.

Regardless, apologises for any inconvenience...

Many Thanks.

hugh aka partyvibe

ok, no problem. I didn't think it would be considered vandalism. I apologize.

The link is spam because it's a link to an advertisement to a site. Movie articles link to imdb because it's a reputable, well-known, comprehensive movie info site. The Rod (☎ Smith) 01:24, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

LeSage Gravity Page[edit]

If you have been monitoring the discussion page on this you will find that we have a posters (most likely a poster on uunet) which, as can be seen from the tone of the posting is, in my opinion, be overtly uncivil and definitely combative. Research on the IP addresses,

63.24.42.237 63.24.43.84 63.24.45.199 63.24.55.93 63.24.58.50 63.24.59.83 63.24.59.185 63.24.116.144 63.24.118.243 63.24.125.112

all come from the MA/NH border area. To resolve this issue I propose that we find a neutral knowledgable person which have expertise in physics modeling BUT no previous interest in this particular topic. The aspects of the LeSage model being disputed are clearly mathematically and well defined within the model (and this article is proportedly about that model) and are not arbitrary. It is not suppose to be bash the idea page. Since it is mathematical and not subjective, this is not an issue open for Bayesian arguments. I had avoided using my name as a contributor for fear that it would draw ad hominum attacks. Even without it, as you can clearly see, ad homenum attacks are occurring. Matt Edwards (MRE) is one of the leading living experts on this particular topic and, like I, am trying to reach an amiable compromise. I will give you an e-mail address where you can reach me if you like, just say so & don't publish it to avoid spammers. User:71.132.13.87

Is the offer of User:Ems57fcva acceptable to you. I have no knowledge of this field and can't really help, other than to leave the page protected. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 03:27, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, as I stated in the discussion page. Hopefully civility & manners will occur from 63.24. ... BTW I think you had a typo and you comment should read I would also suggest that you all take a few days off to stop and think and come back 'without' the argumentive stance that I see here. User:71.132.13.87

I will do what I can, but as I stated in talk:LeSage gravity, this is a food fight between two determined POV-warriers. I hope that both will see fit to back off. --EMS | Talk 16:23, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have come to the conclusion that 63.24.108.68 is the disruptive element in this matter. He appears to be an expert on the topic, but has such strong opinions on the matter that he is useless as an editor. I am going to see if I can work with MRE on this. I hold my nose a bit on doing so, since he is obviously pro-LeSage gravity. However, as I said on the talk page, if he can set aside his biases then he may be a good editor for that page. Given the current state of affairs, I may want you to put this page under partial protection (registered editors only) soon. --EMS | Talk 16:58, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Illinois Central operated the Panama Limited until 30th May 1971. Amtrak later used the same name for the train for a short time. Later, they changed the name over to The City of New Orleans. turfwar.[edit]

Actually, if you were aware what is currently going on at Demarest Hall, you'd realize that the "turfwar." statement is completely legitimate. I was asked to edit the page appropriately by many members of the community. If you have a problem with this, then that problem is yours. There is nothing ridiculous about the statment, nor is it of non-legitimate status.

I have carefully read your sheet and all of its links. I was interested in your story and wondered the details that brought you from Chili to the United Kingdom and then to Canada in the long run. It must have been a immigration nightmare for your parents. My grandmother Collins came down from Quebec Canada during the depression. She married my Grandfather and thus became a US citizen. He fought in WWII here while she had to stay home very poor to take care of the babies as he lost his leg above the knee in the war. I feel no surperiority over immigrants just sadness and yet I feel our country needs to protect its borders by giving work visa's or whatever. I've done no vandalizm on Winipedia if I see things slightly different. I apologiged many times for offending anyone on my Merlinus on my first few edits where I should have used a sandbox. I used bad judgment, but that should not be a permanent black mark on my Wikipedia usage. I have made several other small innocuous edits that offended noOne since then and been told so by other editors. --merlinus 02:54, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Merlinus--merlinus 02:54, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

CambridgeBayWeather One of the things I enjoy about Wikipedia is learning something new. So rather than just write about myself, you will have to follow the links. I'm first name last name and my web site can be found here with a lot of my pictures. I was born on the same day that Concepción, Chile suffered an earthquake in the same year that Cortina d'Ampezzo held the Winter Olympics. The town was still in this county though today it is part of this city. The first place I remember living was in this county just down the street from the station and very close to a minor landmark. We would ride to the station here where my father worked. After a few years we moved but only stayed for a year. Next we moved to here, which is very close to a more famous place. There were several things of interest in the area such as this and this. Of course this imaginary line was here but at the time I did not know that it would rule my working life. Later we moved and lived there for a few years. While there I met this author and these two bass players. Both of them lived in the area, the first here and the second on this island. Another island close by was noted for its gardens created by Sir James. In the same year that this was discovered I emigrated, having been offered a job. I was first posted to Taloyoak and after a year was transferred to Holman. I got married, had two kids and after 20 years we moved and I've lived here ever since. For most of the past 30 years I have worked as an observer and that's where the reference above fits. For those of you interested in such things I made my first edit and have worked on these ever since. My goal is to create a stub for each one. I have also added a few articles here and like to spend time here. Then in October I became an Administrator. -Sent to Merlinus-

Please unlock the LeSage gravity page[edit]

It is time. I eventually gave the #63__ anon the choice of putting up or shutting up (but admitedly in less than polite terms), and as best I can tell the choice was to shut up. I the meantime, User:MRE has created what I see as a good article on LeSage gravity at User:MRE/LeSage gravity, and I would like to see it moved over. I will admit that the #63__ anon did not like it, but since that person has failed to make any specific objections and has apparently quit the scene, I am forced to disregard that. Even if that anon should reappear, my sense is that the food fight is over, and that a renewed edit war is now very unlikely. --EMS | Talk 03:49, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, really sorry about that, Essjay and I caught this guy running three accounts because I guess he feels like he's entitled to have thrice the voice of anyone else. Anyway, he kept on coming back as IPs in that range so we've blocked the /24. We may need to escalate to other ranges because he's used IPs from other ranges in the past. --Cyde Weys 09:56, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Did you enjoy the puppet show?[edit]

Sorry about the collateral damage on your account. It was a happenstance that you happened to be in the way of my... demolition.

I should probably explain. I has decided to stage a controlled implosion of my accounts months ago, after my first run-in with Cyde. His attitude, the smugness of it all, really hit home. I figured, what the hell, he's just some nutbag with no influence, and went on my way.

It was after I noticed him posting elsewhere that I thought to myself, "bloody hell, this asshole actually managed to be an admin!"

Not wanting to have to deal with both HIS little atttiude AND stopping vandalism on Wikipedia, I created a few sockpuppets and staged a nice little fireworks display. Give my regards (and a bit of an apology) to Jedi6, he's a right good chum he is.

And a big hand to all the lovely souls who thought they could figure out how to range-block an IP spoof. :D

Vandalism of several waterfall submissions.[edit]

Dear Cambridge,

I am at witts end over the stubbon behaviour of someone with the server ID 201.240.125.208, who continues to re-edit the Wiki articles on Gocta Cataracts (changing the correct statements, cited in many references books, not to mention on webpages, that this waterfall is the fifth highest, to the incorrect statement, issued at the time of the discovery, that it was the third tallest), and, consequently, removing or altering my carefully researched documentation on Ramnefjellsfossen and Mongefossen, both of which I have visited and photographed on four separate visits (and, again in 2007) to prepare for the publication of my softcover book, "The Waterfalls of Norway".

The aforemention vandal continues to argue, depending on the day in question, the following: 1) the two Norwegian "fossen" are not "true" waterfalls. I would kindly like to know what exactly are they? I cite the Wiki general entry on waterfalls, which states that '...there are many types of waterfalls'. Ramnefjellsfossn is a free-leaping series of cascades, as is Tugela Falls, the world's second highest. The 201.240.125.208 conveniently ignores this similarity to distort the truth re the ranking of Gocta Cataracts.

Can you as an administrator kindly ask him to cease and decist from his constant editing out -- or worse still, removing all together the 'accurate' information, which I pride myself in providing.

Sockpuppet warnings[edit]

Please stop removing the sockpuppet warnings off of Theonlyedge page--69.156.150.188 23:49, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Before you add a sockpuppet tag to a page you must have evidence. When adding the tag you must present/link to that evidence. (copied to User talk:69.156.150.188 Thryduulf 23:52, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User:Theonlyedge[edit]

Good call. I didn't think to check other contribs and Theonlyedge's page wasn't on my watchlist so I didn't spot it that way either. As a very minor point you added the article space {{sprotect}} tag rather than the {{Usertalk-sprotect}} for userspace (I've sorted this). I didn't know it existed either until I saw the list of protection templates at the top of WP:PP, so just keep it in the back of your mind in case you need it in future. Thryduulf 23:52, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to bed now, but keep an eye on this page. The IP user has voted at least twice and made personal attacks there. If he makes another personal attack or accusation of sockpuppetry there or elsewhere then block him for 24 hours - I suspect he will try to use sockpuppets himself to get around a block so keep an eye out. VandalProof 1.1 is Now Available For Download[edit]

Happy Easter to all of you, and I hope that this version may fix your current problems and perhaps provide you with a few useful new tools. You can download version 1.1 at User:AmiDaniel/VandalProof. Let me warn you, however, to please be extremely careful when using the new Rollback All Contributions feature, as, aside from the excessive server lag it would cause if everyone began using it at once, it could seriously aggitate several editors to have their contributions reverted. If you would like to experiment with it, though, I'd be more than happy to use my many sockpuppets to create some "vandalism" for you to revert. If you have any problems downloading, installing, or otherwise, please tell me about them at User:AmiDaniel/VP/Bugs and I will do my best to help you. Thanks. Sorry[edit]

I'm sorry if you think I'm too new to be an adminship but I've been being a Wikipedian since December, 2003. I just didn't have an account. I know all about Wikipedia. I have interviewed many Wikipedians and have even made friends with a few. I WAS a perfect adminship nominee. An old nominee, General Eisenhower 17:21, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Huddersfield Article[edit]

I did remove Patrick Stewart'd name, at 21:40 on the 18th. However I most certainly did not do the other edits on the 19th. Please note that 86.3.1.236 is a LAN used by several hundred users, which may explain why the images would not show a short time ago, ie someone else was editing at the same time. Now I will go back and re-edit something you reverted, accidentally I assume, of my previous edit of the 18th though I do not understand why you needed to do so as it was the later edit, on the 19th, that was from a vandal, or possibly only a partial edit as the Wiki system went down a short while ago possibly cutting off another users legitimate edit. 86.3.1.236 16:17, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

    • Ouch that looks a bit complicated to me! At least it probably explains what happened. I was trying to work out how to report a fault on the Huddersfield page when your message came up. The images would not load as wiki said they did not exist. Glad it's sorted out. No offence was taken by your warning as I realise vandals exist and do revert their crap when I see it. 86.3.1.236 20:27, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DJ P vs D.J.P[edit]

D.J.P is OFFICIALLY how he spells his name.

I made the DJ P page because there was already a wikipedia article out there linking to DJ P... so I just put a redirect on DJ P.

Apple and Conference Call Transcripts[edit]

CambridgeBayWeather,

I wanted to let you know that I've re-instated the link to the conference call transcripts on the entry for Apple Computer which you deleted and then took to arbitration. I've explained why in the discussion on the Apple entry. The editor of the Apple page responded to your request for an opinion with this:

"Not relevant to an encyclopedia - I don't think his link has a place on Wikipedia, its very similar to many other websites. — Wackymacs 20:50, 27 March 2006 (UTC)"

This is what I wrote in correction:

"Wackymacs -- This makes absolutely no sense to me. Although a user leaving multiple links to a single website certainly raises a red flag that they may be spam, it is not a sufficient test of the validity for including an external link. Seeking Alpha is the only site on the Internet that contains free transcripts of the conference calls held by publicly-traded companies, and specifically is the only site that houses transcripts of Apple's conference calls. In that respect, in no way is it "very similar to many other websites"; this was a link to a unique source. So the only reason to delete this link is if you think that Apple's quarterly conference calls are not a valuable reference source for readers of this entry. Given that they contain the company's own discussion of its business and contain much material that is not included in Apple's own press releases, that argument would be hard to accept. I accept that those who want to delete this link are honestly motivated to remove spam from Wikipedia. But this absolutely isn't spam. The genuine value of these transcripts is why I'm adding links to companies' conference call transcripts accross Wikipedia. If you disagree with this, please explain why you think these transcripts are not unique and valuable source of information.— DavidJackson"

I'd add to this that conference call transcripts are regarded as a crucial information source widely used by investors and competitors interested in understanding companies. A number of services exist which charge subscription fees on a per-seat basis for conference call trancripts, usually many thousands of dollars per year. Seeking Alpha is the first site to give away these transcripts for free.

Niagara Airports[edit]

Sorry about replacing the subst'ed template; I tried looking in the history to see if there was any reason as to why it was subst'ed, but nothing caught my eye so I decided to be bold and 'fix' it.

The three airports in question are all within 30 km of each other; I think that would qualify as being "close to each other" even by southern Ontarian distance judging criteria.

I sorted them under 'A' for airport. My idea was to have all three Niagara airports together in the category instead of strewn out over the alphabet. This might go against some policy/MoS recommendation I am not aware of; even if not, I just noticed doing something like A-Niagara, A-Saint and A-Welland to sort them alphabetically under A might be a good idea anyway. Let me know what you think about this. Thanks. --Qviri (talk) 19:43, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

About Category:Transportation in Niagara Falls... Niagara Falls/Niagara South, sure; Welland/Niagara Central I would argue against. While the two other airports could conceivably be used for flying to the Falls (and I think at least one of them is used for helicopter tours and the like, I'm not sure which one, though), nobody sane would use the Welland airfield for these purposes. Call it a local patriotic dislike for being clumped in with another city just because they happen to have a waterfall there, but hey ;) --Qviri (talk) 20:26, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion[edit]

Wondering if you wouldn't mind eyeballing this for me. I have the feeling that it's a vanity page and fairly strong evidence that some (though not all) of the "Keep" votes are from a group of friends of his. It just feels like they're trying to wikilawyer their way into keeping the page. Is there any strong argument I'm forgetting? Thanks, Girolamo Savonarola 23:42, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

194.80.134.151 Vandalism & Pissing About[edit]

Hi,

You've posted a "Last Warning" message on this IP's Talk page, but it has since made stupid changes (examples I found included switching the logo for a Super League club to that of its rivals and writing crap on its managers Wiki article). This is just a quick poke in case you weren't aware of it, as the two "next time you're blocked" messages seem to have had no effect.

Canadian airport stub types by province[edit]

Hi, I noticed you churned through sorting most of the rest of Category:Canadian airport stubs by province. Thank you so much; I really wasn't looking forward to finishing that job on my own.  :-)

I also noticed that you created corresponding categories for each of the airport-stub templates for the Atlantic Provinces. This is slightly problematic; by my original proposal, (and general policy at WP:WSS,) those templates (and those of Nunavut and Yukon) were to be created for convenience's sake, but were supposed to also/still feed into Category:Canadian airport stubs, as they do not contain enough stubs to meet the category threshold on their own (60 in this and most cases.) Now, I was about to propose at WP:WSS/P that they feed into a Category:Atlantic Canada airport stubs, but I think I'll ask you first if that would be acceptable. They shouldn't stay in their current cats; they should either go to Category:Atlantic Canada airport stubs or back to Category:Canadian airport stubs; as you seem to be the lead editor on this one-man WikiProject, I figure you probably know which of those choices is better.

Again, thanks for the considerable amount of help you've given, and happy editing! --CComMack 13:39, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"30 stubs if associated with a WikiProject" only applies if it is the direct subject of the project; for a hypothetical example, WP:TRAINS could create {{rail-stub}} at 30, but {{US-rail-stub}} must wait for 60.
You can override a sortkey by manually including a stub category as well as using a tag, like:
{{Canada-airport-stub}}
[[Category:Canadian airport stubs|Saint Andrews]]
I'm not using AWB for lack of a machine that can run it. It would make my life much easier if I could use it, but I can't. Maybe at some future date, then.
I'm thinking that the Atlantic Provinces could go into their own category, the Northwest Territories goes into its own category (it has 64), and Nunavut and Yukon remain in the parent. Sound reasonable? --CComMack 16:36, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, I can leave things be for now. I'm guessing Davin Lake Airport is having a server lag issue; it should clear up by the time you get back to it. --CComMack 16:50, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

CambridgeBayWeather intro needs a lot of editing[edit]

Cambridge's title was not italicized. The edition titles such as Living, American Standard, King James, and Greek Text are not actual titles. That the autographs were by more that one author is not known. Noting about content of the book was included in Cambridge's introduction, and "refers" was a misspelling of "refer"
