Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and vote pages using three tildes, like this: ~~~. Four tildes (~~~~) produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! Generally you would reply on my talk page, as I am now replying on your talk page. However, some users prefer to keep both (or all) sides of a conversation in one place, but they will have a note on their talk page informing you. Happy edits! Hyacinth 20:27, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Rock in Opposition

Hi Bruce1ee- nice to see your edits on the Rock in Opposition and Henry Cow pages- as a matter of interest I was at the first London RiO festival way back in 1978- great gig! I also saw Henry Cow on there 1977 (final?) tour at the Queens Hotel here in Westcliff-on-Sea! Wonderful band!

As you are up on that field of music, I was wondering if you'd be able to expand the article on Red Square (band) which I narrowly managed to save from deletion a while back, they were very active with Music for Socialism, also gigged with henry cow, Lol Coxhill and people like that- also do you know anything about those who celebrate, a Hulme, Manchester free improvisation outfit who's article I wasn't able to save, but would certainly re-instate if I knew more about them!

One other thing, do you know anything about the legendary Henry Cow Book- I've had an eye out for it for yars but have never ever seen it anywhere!

Cheers quercus robur 19:23, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hi quercus, thanks for the compliments and the fixes you made to the Henry Cow page. I would have given my back teeth to see them perform – they redefined music for me. Regarding the Henry Cow Book, I haven't seen it but the details are (which I should add to Henry Cow):
The Henry Cow book
Compilers: Chris Cutler and Tim Hodgkinson
Publisher: Third Step Printworks, 1981, U.K., 116 pages
Red Square and those who celebrate I don't know and can't find any information on, so I'm sorry I can't help you there.
One last thing. I see you moved the first image on the Henry Cow page to the very top of the page. The reason I had placed it where it was, was because it is a long image and it filled the white-space the right of the Contents box. Should the first image always be at the very top of the page? --Bruce1ee 08:27, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Hi Bruce1ee, cheers for your reply, I moved the pic to the top as on my PC at least the long picture was obscuring some of the actual article text and making the page jumbled, though maybe that was just a problem or glich with my browser (Firefox)? I don't knpow if there is any protocal as to where the first images should go, but I often stick them at the tops of pages! Cheers quercus robur 09:13, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Hi quercus, if the page is not displaying properly in Firefox browsers, then the image must remain where you put it – the page should be browser friendly! It's just that in IE6 at resolution 1024x768, the text to the left of the image is a little squashed up – but I'll play around with the size of the thumbnail. --Bruce1ee 11:37, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Speedy

Would you please use {{db}} when tagging pages for speedy deletion. This template allows taggers to include a reason, which makes the process lots easier for the deleting admin. - Mgm|(talk) 11:26, Jun 20, 2005 (UTC)

Sorry about that – I'll supply a reason in future. BTW Wikipedia:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion states that {{d}} or {{db|Reason}} may be used:
"Non-admins can ask for an admin to delete such a page … by adding either a {{delete}} or {{deletebecause|Reason}} header."
Perhaps Wikipedia:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion should be updated to state that only {{db|Reason}} must be used. --Bruce1ee 13:21, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your edits on the Hawker Tornado piece. Do you know how to widen the blue fact box on the right? I can't seem to figure it out, maybe when I upload the picture it will sort itself out?--Xiphon 09:11, 8 August 2005 (UTC)

... no problem. To widen the fact box: near the end of the first line of the table definition you'll see "width:30%;" – this says "make the width of the table 30% of the page width" – just increase it. --Bruce1ee 10:00, 8 August 2005 (UTC)

Stub sorting

Hello. I can see you've been sorting a lot of band-stubs, and changing them, but just looking at the one that came up on my watchlist (187 Lockdown), you put a stub on for a completely wrong genre. If this is the case for more stubs you've changed, you're probably creating more work for people to correct them or change them back. It's my view on Wikipedia that if you don't know what the topic of an article is, you either leave it alone, or find out before doing anything to it. --Daniel Lawrence 09:37, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

Sorry about that – I misinterpreted 187 Lockdown's "garage act" as "garage band" which performs "garage rock", and hence the {{UK-rock-band-stub}}. --Bruce1ee 09:55, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

You've also put Baingstoke, Hampshire, in the USA for Dead Sea Fucking Scrolls --David Woolley 20:23, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

I'm working too fast (reading Hampshire as New Hampshire) – need to slow down – sorry about that. --Bruce1ee 07:59, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

Please don't resort unless you are familiar with the subject matter. You sorted Kargyraa into music-theory and Ezengileer into music-genre. --Stacey Doljack Borsody 16:18, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

Hongi Hika

Hi just chucked an article on the Hongi Hika stub you contributed to - just letting you know so I'm not stepping on toes, if you want to check it. :-) Winstonwolfe 01:37, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your contribution. I've removed the stub tag as I believe the article is no longer a stub. --Bruce1ee 06:54, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

Stub-sorting.

702 is not a hip hop music group. Neither is BLACKstreet or Groove Theory. They all sing R&B. --FuriousFreddy 13:48, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

The basis of my decision to stub-sort 702 (band), BLACKstreet and Groove Theory as hip hop is that the article introductions at the time of my edits described them as hip-hop groups. --Bruce1ee 04:39, 11 December 2005 (UTC)

template for deletion

TfD nomination of Template:US-hiphop-band-stub

Template:US-hiphop-band-stub has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at Wikipedia:Templates for deletion#Template:US-hiphop-band-stub. Thank you.--Urthogie 13:45, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up, but this template is maintained by Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting and should be nominated for deletion at Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion. See Wikipedia:Templates_for_deletion#Discussion.--Bruce1ee 14:20, 26 January 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for informing me of that(learn something new everyday at wikipedia). I'll move it there.--Urthogie 16:21, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

stub renaming

Could you please voice your support for the rename at stubs for deletion to hiphop-groups-stub, as it makes sense to build categories from the top down.--Urthogie 13:53, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

I'm sorry but I don't support your proposed rename. In stub-sorting it's not necessary to distinguish between bands and groups. Remember also that the stub tag is removed as soon as the article is expanded. --Bruce1ee 06:37, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
I proposed a compromise on the SFD page.--Urthogie 09:07, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

note of thanks

just want to say thank you for being a stub sorter - I don't have the whole hierarchy of stubs in my head, and knowing that when I use an over-generic stub, someone will come and fix it, is a great relief to me! --Alvestrand 12:39, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

Cherryh articles / Cyteen

Hi, thanks for your March 30 note regarding the C. J. Cherryh articles on my (no longer in use) anonymous talk page. I've finally gotten around to creating a username and am now doing all of my edits under the new name. (New talk page here).

I agree that the Cyteen page needs a fair amount of work and have put that under my to-do list. Not sure when I'll get around to it, tho. I have some other projects I want to get done (Cherryh-related and not), so it might be a while. Anyway, glad you obviously share an interest in building out that section of Wikipedia so I'm sure we will wind up collaborating at some point on various articles.

Cheers, Fairsing 03:58, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

Fred Frith / Massacre

Hello Bruce1ee, Thanks for your contribution in respect of this great musician. Is there a means to communicate with you off list by email? chazuke

Thank you for the complement. You can email me at Emailuser/Bruce1ee. --Bruce1ee 11:45, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi - I tried email but the link doesn't work for me ... I'm here for unreleased live recordings. Have collected all available bootlegs ("New MASSACRE" Moers, Warsaw and NYC). Looking for recordings of the Paris, Roskilde and the Hiroshima gigs. No commercial interest.

Contacted Mr. Frith directly and he kindly informed me that he's considering an official release of the concert in Paris. So a recording exists!

For fans of Frith & MASSACRE, the formation Frith/Zorn/Laswell/Lombardo is also recommended. They performed at least 4 times: NYC, London, Paris, Victoriaville, under the project names Sanctuary and Bladerunner. Audience recordings exist for each gig, but no official release.

Thanks for the info – I personally don't have any Massacre bootleg recordings, but I'll look at mentioning them in Massacre. Do you have dates of the Massacre live recordings? --Bruce1ee 17:36, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi, thanks your reply. Details of the recordings at http://www.turning-groove.de and check the live gigs dates. I have recordings of Moers, Warsaw, NYC and London (London is an official release). Warsaw was filmed by the Polish TV. There exists a DVD of the gig. It is excellent. No recordings of new Massacre have surfaced for Paris Roskilde Hiroshima. As mentioned previously: Contacted Mr. Frith directly and he kindly informed me that he's considering an official release of the concert in Paris. So a recording exists! The quality of the bootlegs is excellent. So is the performance. Since you are interested: The best way for you may be to contact Mr. Frith via http://www.fredfrith.com and ask him directly for advice. The "old Massacre" performed live also, and numerous recordings exist. A band called 2 against 1 with Anton Fier instead of Fred Maher pretty much played Massacre stuff. Recordings were recently traded at http://www.dimeadozen.org To mention the existence of the bootlegs on the master web site may be problematic because of copyright issues. None of us pusues any commercial interest here, but it's a matter of rules ...

Expanding Cherryh articles

Thanks for your note. Yes, it's been good to fill out the category a bit, although there's still a lot of work to do! (Stuff in the A-U universe; cleanups of Cyteen, etc.). In response to your question, I've read almost all her novels except for the second and third novels in the Russian trilogy. Rusalka is the only Cherryh book I've read to date that I didn't like, and so haven't gotten around to the others in the series. But aside from those two, I've read all her novels. Most of her short fiction too, with a couple of exceptions of short stories in odd places (e.g. Elfquest, Glass and Amber, etc.). Fairsing 16:27, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

On the piffero

Are you sure this is the Haydin instrument? Because "piffero" can be one of two instruments, in Italian: the one described here, and the military fife. Currently, the first meaning is prevailing, but at the times of Haydin... Mikelima 21:29, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

Trees

Hi Bruce, I deprodded Trees (band) because in my opinion they more than meet WP:MUSIC:

  • Has released two or more albums on a major label or one of the more important indie labels (i.e. an independent label with a history of more than a few years and a roster of performers, many of which are notable). Dane Conover has, if you include his other projects.
  • Has been featured in multiple non-trivial published works in reliable and reputable media (excludes things like school newspapers, personal blogs, etc...). See [4].
  • Has been placed in rotation nationally by any major radio network. The band's two videos were played on MTV back in the early 1980's, and on VH1 Classic and MTV2 more recently. See the MTV2 logo here.

Anyway, hopefully this will keep you from sending it to AFD, but if you do I think the band passes. Cheers. BoojiBoy 18:28, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm happy with your "deprodding" motivation and I won't contest it. I would suggest, however, that you put this motivation on the Trees (band) talk page to alert other potential "prodders". --Bruce1ee 06:12, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Stubs and subst

Good work on refining stubs. Please remember to use the subst: code at the start. Thanks. --Dweller 10:33, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. Regarding the subst'ing of stub templates, the stub sorting project prefers not to do this for reasons given here [5]. --Bruce1ee 10:52, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
I couldn't really follow that... are you saying that no stub codes should be subst? I've only been doing it because I've been told off for not doing so in the past? Is there consensus on this? --Dweller 11:00, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
There is consensus, but I'll get back to you with the official position on this. --Bruce1ee 11:12, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Cool. In the meantime, should I stop subst-ing? --Dweller 11:17, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Yes, please hold off subst-ing until I get back to you. --Bruce1ee 11:24, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
OK, we've got our act together now. Please have a look at WP:WSS#General rules and WP:SUBST#Templates that should NOT be substituted. I hope this helps. Thanks. --Bruce1ee 15:19, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Can't see why you think this fits in worldmusic-stub - it's not a folk song. I've aleady reverted this change once by a previous user, so will wait a few hours for you to explain your thinking before I revert again :-) Bob aka Linuxlad 10:00, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

My reason for using {{worldmusic-song-stub}} here was that I felt it was the best fit from all the song-stubs available, but I've changed it now to the more general {{song-stub}}. --Bruce1ee 10:34, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Concerning Coconut Rough:

Thank you for refining the band's stub. I never thought to do that. Hopefully it can finally escape stub status. Krushsister 01:27, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

No problem. You can see the complete stub template hierarchy at WP:WSS/ST. --Bruce1ee 09:00, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Wow, there are more stub categories than I'd figured would exist. WAY more. BTW, I completely redid the Coconut Rough entry and invite you to take a look at it now to determine if it has enough information to warrant its removal from pure "stub" status, or if not, what else needs to be added to the article to remove that "stub" status from the profile. (Krushsister 17:06, 19 August 2006 (UTC))
I think it's looking good, but I believe it still needs a little more before the stub-tag should be removed: for example an info-box and a discography section. Have a look at some of the other band articles, like The Feelers. --Bruce1ee 08:46, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
Gotcha. I've seen other band pages, but only more established ones, and as such I wasn't aware of exactly what would comprise a regular band page that would set it apart from a stub. But thanks for letting me know what's missing. (Krushsister 14:25, 20 August 2006 (UTC))

Theta Beta Potata PUNK HOUSE Deletion Review

Theta Beta Potata

This article was first started by me and was deleted back in May '06. I was reading the punk house article and saw that the link for the TBP article was no longer red so I clicked on it and there was an article back up, started by another user. I dont know who started it because, it was deleted soon after I saw it. The decision made in the "Article for Deletion" debate should be reconsidered. The article is about a punk house not a fratenal organization. It seems that the debate, run by User:ChrisB and results were reported by User:Mailer Diablo. I will post this on their talk pages. This is the first time I have requested a deletion review so please let me know what else I need to do. If there is anything. I am on wikipedia frequently and I want to learn. Thanks. Thanks for uploading Image:DagmarKrause.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. why did you revert it to the old style?Charles.2345 03:08, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, I should have explained myself in my edit summary. As per MoS:DP, level 2 section headers should only be used for disambiguation lists of over 30 entries. But not withstanding that, there were problems with your edit: You converted some of the headings to section headers, and others you left as before. Why is "In music" different to "In films and theater"? Some of the headings start with "In", others don't; some have the first word capitalized, others don't. And finally, your first heading is "misc", which should really be at the end of a list, not at the beginning. --Bruce1ee 07:20, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Orphaned fair use image (Image:CJCherryh WorldCon DenventionTwo 1981.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:CJCherryh WorldCon DenventionTwo 1981.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. red links vs blue?

Bruce, I have seen your name on many pages I have created, so I thought you would be as good a person as any to ask: why are internal links showing up dark red rather than blue? I didn't change any settings. Is it something I can fix? Thanks--Bawtyshouse 15:32, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I had the same problem briefly yesterday and then it went away. This issue was discussed at the Village pump here. It should be resolved now. --Bruce1ee 06:48, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

Hello Bruce1ee, an automated process has found an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, such as fair use. The image (Image:RockInOpposition flyer.jpg) was found at the following location: User:Bruce1ee. This image or media will be removed per statement number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media will be replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. The image that was replaced will not be automatically deleted, but it could be deleted at a later date. Articles using the same image should not be affected by my edits. I ask you to please not readd the image to your userpage and could consider finding a replacement image licensed under either the Creative Commons or GFDL license or released to the public domain. Thanks for your attention and cooperation. User:Gnome (Bot)-talk 07:33, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:FredFrith(ReR2001Catalogue).jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Orphaned non-free media (Image:IvaBittová (2006).jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:IvaBittová (2006).jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 13:38, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Minton

Many thanks for your efforts to tidy up & expand the Phil Minton article. I drafted the piece because I was pissed off that someone speedy-deleted the original article in December 2006 (during the Xmas holidays...!). --ND 01:19, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

No problem! It's only a start – there's obviously room for further expansion. A few of the articles I'd created had red-links to Phil Minton and when I noticed they had turned blue I went to have a look. I didn't see the original article, but then I obviously didn't look quick enough! --Bruce1ee 06:39, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Fair use disputed for Image:CherryhChanursEndgamePBCover.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:CherryhChanursEndgamePBCover.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 05:30, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanx

Greetings Bruce1ee, Thanx for helping me out on the Riding with the King infox - I was way out of my depth! Regs., --Technopat 14:12, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

My pleasure! --Bruce1ee 14:38, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for all your work on various avant-prog articles. I've just created Biota (band) and would appreciate any help to improve it. Bondegezou 15:04, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for the compliment! I'll certainly have a look at Biota. --Bruce1ee 15:27, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
Cheers. The page is a bit disorganised at present and I'm having trouble pinning down some details, but it's coming along. Bondegezou 15:51, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
Great start you've made on the article. I've made a few adjustments myself and added a little, but there's not much info that I can find on them. Please check the members in the infobox, I'm not sure if I've got that right. --Bruce1ee 08:35, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Admin

Hi. I'd like to nominate you as an admin, as I think you're qualified. Let me know if you're interested. Epbr123 00:11, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your vote of confidence in me, but I'm going to decline. My work here is sporadic and I don't want to commit myself to the responsibilities of an admin as I won't always have the time. --Bruce1ee 06:43, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
