Hello. I would have converted the external links to inline citations but I wasn't sure they were suitable references. I removed this link [2] because it doesn't appear to provide any information regarding the preceding sentence. And this link [3] does not indicate why it should be considered a reliable source. Your recent edits to Corfe Mullen

I noticed your recent edits to the Corfe Mullen page, where you have updated the titles in most cases. I don't have a major problem with these changes, but can I ask why you:

a. Took out the word 'The'? Is this a Wikipedia rule that I've missed?

b. Changed Period to 'Era'? I realise that the term era adds notoriety, but in this context I would have said the meaning was the same.

c. Changed 'Famous (and Infamous) Ex-residents' to 'Notable residents'. When I put the original title, I did so because I wanted to inform the reader that not all (most) of the people mentioned, were less than savoury. That message is lost if you don't follow the links, and not everyone will. Terry C (talk) 20:22, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

At first it was only my intention to remove unnecessary capitalisation from the headings (as per the guidelines at WP:Headings), but I noticed the titles could also be made a bit simpler and clearer.

a) I don't think there is any rule against using "the" but I would say it's better to keep the headings as succinct as possible. You will generally find this is the case with GA and FA standard articles.

b) I changed Victorian period to era because in my mind that seemed the better wording, and it is also the title of the article Victorian era. Feel free to change it back if you wish.

c) "Famous (and Infamous) Ex-residents" seemed a bit wordy – "notable people" is the usual title for this sort of section (see the suggested guidelines at Wikipedia:WikiProject UK geography/How to write about settlements). Readers shouldn't have to always click on a link to find out more about something, perhaps an extra bit of text explaining why the resident was famous or infamous would be an option. Hello thanks for the note. There is no need for you to apologise at all -- it's just a difference of opinion. In my experience, football biographies on Wikipedia tend be a victim of recentism and become cluttered with excessive amounts of info about nearly every goal they score. Neither the own goal or the match seemed very notable or decisive at that stage of the PL season. IMO it's better to just to stick with a brief overview of each season which contains just the more noteworthy info. Barret (talk) 19:46, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Clavell Tower

Hello BarretBonden, please, I don't mean to be rude, but how about if I rewrite the Clavell Tower Section: Tower of the Winds without the italics;

The question remains: What is the Clavell Tower? A summerhouse, an observatory or a watchtower? Or solely a folly? This has the greatest credence. Because it is built relatively simple, it is not an easy building to live in, but was pleasant sight to look at after it was built. The tower sits high and exposed on the cliff top, so this could account for an alternative name it has Tower of the Winds. On the other side of the bay, also in lonely and isolated possition but more treasured (it seems) is a Nodding Donkey oil pump. Oil has been pumped from these cliffs since the late 1950’s and the largest European onshore site is nearby at Wytch Farm. A second question arises following this statement and one wonders why some of the revenue earned from the oil, could not have been invested in saving the tower. --Huligan0 (talk) 13:42, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

Hi firstly I would like to thank you for all the work you've carried out on Dorset articles lately and the translations you have created over on the German wikipedia. Unfortunately even with the italic portions removed most of that section still appears to be original thought. If it is unknown what purpose the tower was built for then I think this should just be simply stated instead of a section of unsourced speculation. The Landmark Trust (which seems to be a more reliable source than IsleofPurbeck.com) says it was built as a folly and observatory so I have made a few alterations to the article to include this. I had hoped that I would recieve some feedbacks, from the copy/paste action and it worked in a few cases. Actually, I am really hoping for a few new Artikels, so that I can translate Dorset/Isle of Purbeck into German. In english it's quite currious because sometimes the References are with a space, sometimes without, sometimes they get corrected in, sometimes corrected out. In German the space always gets corrected to go between punctuation and reference. In German they want the reference section after external links, in english before. Mukkulathor Wiki Page

Hi, both edits are false. The initial intro page has been vandalized by user T22878. The actual intros tell that these 3 castes (more than 10% of the Tamil population) are of Tamil Royal lineage!!... The ref given are false, just playonwords (thevar, dewar are (respectable) words before being a caste name). These castes used to be soldiers of the kings and Land lords (please check the initial refs) and after the collapse of then ancient order some of them managed to found their little kingdoms (this was the initial intro of this wiki page, much more accurate). External Links on Corfe Mullen Page

I appreciate your point of view, but I disagree that the external links that you deleted on the Corfe Mullen page are not within Wikipedia guidelines. If you are going to delete the links to the schools and churches; which you did, then you need to do it for the other pages that include these (take Wimborne for example). I did look at the Wikipedia guidelines links that you gave, but couldn't see that any of the links on the Corfe Mullen page were of a commercial nature. They are all links to non-profit, non-commercial groups and organisations.

Furthermore, most of the other links are extremely relevant to the village; the link to the Dorset County Museum for example, which is where some of the references originated from. There may be one or two that are iffy, but I think that the vast majority are highly relevant.

You're a bit quick for me :-) I've had to look carefully at what this dmoz template is for and I'm still not sure of the point of it. Are you saying that it's OK to put external links in that format, but not in the more usual html format, where the visible text hides the link? Although the external links were likely added in good faith and probably not intended to promote a website or a product, it should be taken into consideration that links in the "External links" section should be kept to a minimum and Wikipedia is not repository of links. Ideally only "official websites" or links that provide unique information essential to the topic should be included -- afterall this is an encyclopaedia, not a place provide readers with a handy list of external links to various local organisations, churches and schools. Let me know if you still think any of the links should be restored but for now I'll add the dmoz template which is basically just a link to Corfe Mullen-related websites at the Open Directory Project and a useful way to reduce spam. I have made a minor contribution to the article on Christchurch (Dorset) which, I notice, you have also contributed to. I now wish to insert photographs of the Constable's House and another of the castle keep which I think gives a better idea of the motte on which it sits. Do you wish to use an image which is already available on Wikipedia or is it your own work or an image from the web? To insert an image which has already been uploaded use the following text: [[File:Example.jpg|thumb|Caption...]] The "thumb" parameter automatically places the image on the right, but if you would like to place the image on the left just add "left", for example: [[File:ChristchurchPriory.jpg|thumb|left|Christchurch Priory]]. Once you have added the image to the article use the preview button before you save to check you are happy with its position. Nice work so far and an interesting read. Apart from the lack of references which can be added in the future, my only major concern is where to fit it into the article. I've found that most Wikipedia articles about UK settlements roughly follow this suggested guideline for the layout. Take a look at some of the featured and good settlement articles at WikiProject UK for some examples. Although it could be added to the article just as it is, I would work what you've written into the history section and perhaps split off some of the content about the more recent industry into a separate economy section. Alternatively, if you plan to continue adding more content and references it might be long enough for an article of its own. Other suggestions: I would remove "Residents of that time will recall with mixed emotions" which seems too informal, and although the images are connected to the items mentioned in the text I think it would be better to have images taken in Christchurch -- are there any images available of the buildings you have mentioned? Thanks for your constructive reply. I have checked out the article 'UK Settlements' and there appears to be an option of a 'Industry and Commerce' sub-heading (see 2.1). However as my work is a history of industry, I think it might be better if I split it up as you suggest. There is quite a bit more to add but rather than have it as an article in its own right, I thought it might be better to add it to the existing article. Eventually I would like to see the article upgraded.

I have not yet referenced the work as a considerable ammount comes from my own local knowledge. I am confident however that I can supply citations after a few hours in the local library. Can I list a museum as a source?

With regards to the images: The Sea Vixen (XP924) was photographed at Hurn Airport where it resides and I will make that clear in the text. Ideally I would of preferred XJ580 which stood for years at the entrance to the Airfield Ind. Est. but could not find a photo that wasn't copyright, see http://www.airsceneuk.org.uk/airshows99/jetheritage/jetheritage.htm. There are pictures of it at its new home, RAF Tangmere, but I didn't think that was suitable either. Photos of existing buildings will be simple enough as I can take them myself (thanks for helping me to understand how this is done) but things that no longer exist are obviously a bit more problematic. Thanks for the link to Geograph UK by the way, I found some great pictures of the old trolley bus at the Christchurch terminal, I think they should go in somewhere.

Of course that sentence should go! What was I thinking? Sometimes things just come out as I'm typing.

Sorry about the late reply... I'm not too sure about using a museum as a source because there might be some verifiabilty and reliabilty issues. Image Problem

Hello again. I have a slight problem with an image I uploaded and hope you might be able to help. I took the photograph with the camera on its side and uploaded the image to wikicommons as it was. I now find that I am unable to rotate the image 90 degrees. Is there a way of doing this? I have read the section on using images but it sounds like I need to edit it using my own software (microsoft photo editor) and then upload it again. Is that right? Yes you'll need to rotate the image yourself before uploading. You'll can do this with most image viewers and editors. I don't have Microsoft Photo Editor but I guess the when you open the image the option to rotate is in the 'image' tab at the top. After you've saved it, go to the file's page (?) in the Commons and click on "Upload a new version of this file" which is in the file history section. Browse for the rotated image you just saved on your computer, leave the destination filename as it is, add a brief summary of the change you have made in the file changes box, check the ignore any warnings box and upload the new file.
