Sandbot for finnish wikipedia[edit]

Sorry for my not-so-good english.

Can you set up the SandBot clean up and put text "{{Ole hyvä ja tee muokkauksesi tämän rivin alapuolelle}}" (whitout quotes) to the fi:Wikipedia:Hiekkalaatikko? Vandals remove or daub up that text, and it's huge problem. --Iirolaiho 12:56, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I confirm that fi-wiki Sandbox is located at fi:Wikipedia:Hiekkalaatikko and it should always include the template {{Ole hyvä ja tee muokkauksesi tämän rivin alapuolelle}} as the first line of the page (currently it also has some extended HTML comments, but those are not really practical since most newcomers don't understand them anyway).
The fi-wiki approval process for bots is located in English at fi:Wikipedia:Botit and it's pretty straigthforward. I've already put up a section on the talk page in Finnish about SandBot where I have outlined that Sandbot will periodically blank the Sandbox and enforce the template header. Now we'll wait for a week and see if anyone objects; if not, then the fi-wiki community approves Sandbot to protect fi-wiki against evil vandals :) MikkoM 17:27, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism detection algorith[edit]

Hi, I am considering ideas on how to do this. pop into #en.wikipedia.vandalism anytime. ;) --Cool Cat Talk 18:14, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Great to see you back![edit]

Good to see you back. If you can, take a peek over Wikipedia talk:Bots every so often. The occasional bot request requires someone's else input than my own. --AllyUnion (talk) 19:04, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Yeah, I'd noticed you'd become pretty much the lord and master (and sole inhabitant) of Wikipedia:Bots. I've been trying to leave a note there when I have something worthwhile to say on a proposal, but I'll redouble my efforts. --fvw* 19:27, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have much time to contribute to the Wikipedia as I use to, but I figured I'd make the most of watching a page which has been neglected by a great deal of the community. --AllyUnion (talk) 21:27, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Toolserver[edit]

Sure, I'd like to join and find out more about it! --HappyCamper 23:50, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I invite you to join the m:Toolserver. May we be able to collaborate a bot project or two. --AllyUnion (talk) 23:43, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Cool, thanks, and though some collaboration on bots sounds both fun and useful, and I can certainly think of some interesting things to do with live replication of the database, I don't think I have any need for access right now. I didn't know this existed though, so I'm bound to think up some mad ideas and want access soon. 23:50, 3 October 2005 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for the invite. Whenever I can back home, I would have more time to work with everyone on it. At the moment, I'm just getting Cfd out of backlog. I'll stop by periodically until then, and see what's going on. Thanks again. Who?¿? 02:46, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm just wondering how you came to the name "AllyUnion". All this time, I thought you were female. lol. -- WB 02:43, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wikifun Answer[edit]

G'day AllyUnion. I have just finished (hopefully correctly) answering Question 29 of Wikifun. I'm 95% sure I'm right. I await your response. Here is a shortcut!! Cheers Ianblair23 05:10, 7 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You can now turn on the SandBot for fi-wiki.[edit]

There are no objections at fi:Keskustelu Wikipediasta:Botit#en:User:Sandbot. You can now turn on the bot. --Iirolaiho 15:49, 7 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I see no objections. I want to go ahead with it. Though my python knowlege is limited so thats why I am here :). --Cool Cat Talk 22:42, 7 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Kakashi[edit]

An odd name for a bot, any reasons? ;) --Cool Cat Talk 22:42, 7 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It is a Naruto character who's an uber cool ninja. I run the bot a bit fast, like a ninja, and my little bot completes any of my tasks I want in relative short order. --AllyUnion (talk) 00:20, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Whobot flag[edit]

Hi, I was wondering if you would mind stopping by meta and endorsing Whobot. They just put the bot section request back up, due to the bug with not being able to assign admin/bot status. I see some other language sysops signed some requests, thought it might speed it up a bit, as Whobot has been extremely buzy trying to clear the backlog on CFD. m:requests for permissions for whobot. Thanks. Who?¿? 22:51, 7 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

In the regards of deleting new pages under 14 bytes...[edit]

Let me get back to on this one... --AllyUnion (talk) 00:33, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The only problem I can think of is getting the code for recent changes. Unless you plan to parse that from IRC as well... but that wouldn't necessary make certain you got all the pages. --AllyUnion (talk) 00:36, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The parsing of IRC is already done. I know exactly when a tiny page is created. --Cool Cat Talk 00:50, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
1) I fixed the deletion bug, so I know what's wrong now. 2) Have you ever considered what would happen if the IRC recent changes bot stopped working, yet the Wikipedia is still working? --AllyUnion (talk) 08:06, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I forgot to mention that a sysop, like myself, would require to run this program. I'm not particularly fond of the idea of using an IRC script as the mode of getting new articles. --AllyUnion (talk) 08:25, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I know. The bot would need adequate powers to delete pages.
If the irc RC bot its all hell for us. If that hapens we can think of it then but I think thats quite unlikely.
I do not have to be the one running the bot if people cant trust handing me such power, after all I am not here for power ;)
--Cool Cat Talk 12:56, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Glad you caught that! I always look at the history, but the page was listed as New (N) in RP, and was about 2 min. old, or so I thought, so I didn't think to look. So either the software was wonked, or I misread it (it's late, probably the latter...) MCB 06:25, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sand bot[edit]

Hello

I think the best is to propose it in our pump : http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipédia:Le_Bistro, where people will be able to comment. It will be best

Greetings Anthere

Thank you!![edit]

Howdy! How are you? I hope that you are doing fine. Thank you for your assistance with my public domain issue in regard to the USS Schmitt. I am ignorant about posting at Wikipedia but I knew it was public domain. Thank you so very much for your help in allowing this material to be posted. My late father served about the Schmitt and it was a very special ship for me.

Thank you again. kindest regards, Phillip

AFD List[edit]

Thank you for providing this service: it's very useful. Would it be possible to add a link to the relevant log page when creating a new section? If I were to start the ball rolling by adding a link to this article to the top of this section and so on, would this screw up the bot, and/or would the bot remove the links? —Phil | Talk 06:52, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The bot would remove the links. --AllyUnion (talk) 08:47, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry... run that by me again? You want me to link each sectional date to the appropriate date log? If you were asking for that, it already does that. Or are you asking me to place a link to the AFD List on each log page for all the 7 days? --AllyUnion (talk) 08:50, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Don't mind me, I'm just working out how to humiliate myself by asking the most stupid question with the most obvious answer. Need more coffee! Quiet! back to work! Sorry to bother you, I'll be hiding under the desk...although your new suggestion—which arrived whilst I was adding this—sounds good. —Phil | Talk 09:10, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wikifun questions[edit]

I currently have 5 questions and am working on more. When they are finished, where should I post them? Will we each administer the checking of our 10 questions, or will I need to backchannel the answers to someone who will run all of them? ESkog | Talk 16:18, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Post them at Wikipedia:Wikifun/Round 10; You will be administering your own 10 questions, which means you are welcome to attempt someone else's 10 questions. --AllyUnion (talk) 21:28, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Jimbo Wales to Attend San Diego Meetup on October 18 2005[edit]

Hello, Jimbo Wales will be in San Diego to attend OOPSLA and has agreed to come by and visit with the San Diego wikipedians. If you are interested, you will find more info on my talk page. Johntex\talk 00:54, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, but I can't go. Uh, got stuff to do. Lots of stuff. – Zntrip 20:13, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Details on the Meetup[edit]

I went to the Town and Country area last night to check out restaurants. I've eaten at the restaurants in Town and Country and they weren't that great, ao I wanted to find us somewhere nearby. There is a nice but expensive steak house down the street, but I don't know what everyone's budget is. I picked this place, I hope it is OK with everyone:

  • 7:00pm Tuesday October 18th
  • 24-Hour Valley Kitchen Family Restaurant
  • 875 Hotel Circle South, Mission Valley, 619-819-1017 or 619-298-8282.
  • It is right across Highway 8 from the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center
  • It is very casual and comes highly recommended by the hotel desk. Entrees are $8-$15. They have a wide menu: They have breakfast all-days, salads, burgers, steaks, echilladas, pies, that sort of place.

See you there! Johntex\talk 01:32, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Translated Sandbot messages[edit]

Hi,

I noticed that you have (machine?) translated edit summary messages of Sandbot in finnish. Althought the intention is good, the result is hilarious and total nonsense (see http://www.engrish.com and you might get the idea). It would be much clearer in fi if you use only english messages or ask correct translations from someone who knows finnish. Cleaning the sandbox would be in finnish Hiekkalaatikon siivous and Enforcing sandbox header. translates to Hiekkalaatikon otsikon palautus. --Harriv 11:54, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I was looking over one of the deletion logs randomly, when I saw this... The log is a mess. I can't tell which nominations were properly closed or not. --AllyUnion (talk) 06:58, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I see it's a mess. Unfortunately I don't have much time these weeks to deal with such. At first glance, it appears to be a mix of two things... User:SimonP deleted a bunch of articles without closing the VFD noms. And the Pending Deletion Bot deleted some other things a couple months later, which is likely when the Block Compress Bug was fixed. I'd say query at AN/I to look over it, but also at first glance the nominations have been properly processed but not closed. Radiant_>|< 12:34, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Did mention there will be access to the database? --AllyUnion (talk) 09:36, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, you did actually. And I'm still salivating at the thought of near-live database reads, but on the other hand I still haven't got any concrete plans of what to do with it so I don't really have the need just yet. Thanks for the suggestion though. --fvw* 17:27, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, the penny drops, I see what you're getting at now. Yeah, I suppose if the proposal fails and toolserver really gets that part of the database too, I'll be signing up. --fvw* 17:39, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProjects[edit]

Hi there! Could you please run the script once more that flags WikiProjects as inactive if not edited for over X months? It's getting pretty crowded in that cat. Thanks. Radiant_>|< 18:45, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, and Kurando-san has archived 3 projects. --AllyUnion (talk) 04:34, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, you have some project pages that have been edited recently... like this one Wikipedia:WikiProject Off/Off-Off Broadway and don't fall under the 6 month criteria despite having no talk page. --AllyUnion (talk) 04:45, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect[edit]

Your bot messed up El Progreso Department by changing this from a redirect to El Progreso department to a redirect to itself. Please take care, SqueakBox 15:31, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Not my fault. You pointed El Progreso Department to El Progreso department. However, El Progreso department was a redirect to El Progreso Department. Of course, a bot would not be able to resolve this since it was a redirect to itself and to itself... The two links are the history right before the bot edited, by the way. --AllyUnion (talk) 20:15, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I can see what happened now, and of course the bot couldn't have resolved it, though it did flag the problem. I had somehow missed it. Sorry, I had thought the bot had made a mistake, SqueakBox 20:21, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Vo Vi Nam[edit]

Interesting redirect. You changed the redirect of Vo Vi Nam -> Vovinam to Vo Vi Nam -> Dao.
Why do you think this is correct ? In my oppinion this redirect is totally wrong. Dao is part of any martial art but this does not justify a redirection to Dao. Thomas 20:59, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The redirection was based on, what I presumed was, reliable data at Special:DoubleRedirects. Apparently, I was incorrect in that assumption. --AllyUnion (talk) 21:04, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

bot overwriting its talk page entries[edit]

The NotificationBot is an excellent idea and I am glad that you have taken the steps to implement and operate it. However, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that NotificationBot has overwritten its own previous entry at User talk:Camembert. If this problem is widespread, people may be unaware of prior notifications that are overwritten by new ones. The Uninvited Co., Inc. 22:09, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your bot is playing up[edit]

I didn't upload Image:Blast positive and negative.gif. Why have I got a notification on my talk page that it isn't sourced? - Ta bu shi da yu 22:53, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This is a great idea! Just like "Ta bu shi da yu" I didn't upload the photo, that was done by "Automated conversion". I tagged Image:Buddhist monastery.jpg with "No source" which I assume is why I was notified. But good luck anyway. Thuresson 23:32, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ugh. I'll have to figure out later. Must be something with the unicode. --AllyUnion (talk) 14:05, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Does the "ä" charaters cause this problem? If yes, we can remove they from the template name. --Iirolaiho 15:42, 19 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Notification bot - 2[edit]

Could you point your nice bot at Category:Uploader unsure of copyright status? I can draft wording if you like - it needs to be a little different. There are fewer maybe its not worth it - could do them by hand but I like the formal bot statements. Oh and in general, maybe you want to suggest comments go to a special page, which more people could watch and reply to rather than your talk page bearing the brunt. Justinc 01:27, 19 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

A WikiProject would be most appropriate for such. Maybe Wikipedia:WikiProject Image tagging? --AllyUnion (talk) 05:05, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Notification bot isn't as smart as it thinks it is[edit]

"The image you uploaded, Image:Burmese cat large.jpg, has no source information."

Not true.

"If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, ie in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page."

Did that. There's a link right there, on the page.

--Paul A 08:20, 19 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

LeonWhite was the one who tagged the image with the {{no source}} template. The Notification Bot is only for notification. --AllyUnion (talk) 04:55, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Assistance with a program idea[edit]

My Perl isn't that terribly strong when it comes to web forms, nor is my Python. What I want to do is to create a form that would assist in AFD closures... Well, I know the python Wikipedia bot framework has a working delete function... --AllyUnion (talk) 08:20, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, it's pretty easy to interpret web forms. If you're doing your CGI script in Perl, you get a bunch of name-value pairs, either in $ENV{"QUERY_STRING"} or on STDIN, depending on whether you made the submit method GET or POST, respectively. Then you just need to do whatever wiki edits you need to do, and print "Content-type: text/html\r\n\r\n", followed by the HTML for the result page you want the user to see. The name-value pairs you get as input correspond to the <INPUT> (and similar) tags in the HTML of your form. If you're looking for Perl code that pretends to fill in web forms (like the delete page), comparing the postPage() subroutine of User:Pearle (source is posted on the wiki) to the Wikipedia edit form. The interesting part is what your AFD-assistant form is going to look like. Will it pull in a debate and then have buttons for DELETE, KEEP, NO CONSENSUS, MERGE, REDIRECT, etc.? -- Beland 03:45, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, and one option for other. --AllyUnion (talk) 04:59, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, buttons for delete, keep, etc, can be easily done in Javascript. ABCD's monobook.js has those. About implementing the tool as a web form, how can one make sure it is not used by the wrong people?
Anyway, this project looks cool, and I could help also with Perl cgi programming if need be. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 05:41, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The edits should be done under your own username, meaning that it would have log in as yourself. The trick of the matter here is that it we'd have to either stick with Perl and implement all the functions we need, or attempt to implement it by piping to python to use the framework. --AllyUnion (talk) 08:07, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
What functions do you need? The Perl framework now has functions to upload and download things, and has exception handling, meaning it will not just die if a upload/download operation fails, but rather will try again. It has features for reconciling two different versions (say in case of edit conflict) but I did not try this one. When the perl client uploads/downloads stuff it writes to the disk, but it can be rather easily modified not to do that. Anything else needed? Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 08:25, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Here's a list of things that I use in the Python wikipedia framework, and by the way, I don't have to install 16 or 20 different modules just to get the Python framework to work: It parses categories for me, it gets a page, it posts a page, it deletes a page, & it parses the page's history for me. Those are principly the functions I use. I'd like to have access to a move page, to protect a page, & to parse the upload history. --AllyUnion (talk) 08:36, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

They are not 16-20 modules, rather around 6. It can get a page, post a page. It does not delete a page, or parse page's history. I have my own small function which gets the contents of a category, by parsing the output of wget. One can rather easily make it parse the page hisory I would think. I wouldn't know how to implement deleting a page or protecting a page. So right, the WWWW::MediaWiki package is rather limited, so probably calling Python from Perl via a system call is the way to go. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 09:45, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

About the notification bot, I replied on my talk page. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 10:07, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, AllyUnion. I just wanted to confirm that the NotificationBot is up and running. I've updated the message for Mind Benders and scheduled the cron for this Wednesday, October 26. On a separate note, since you're such a proficient 'bot programmer, I have an idea for a new bot. Would it be possible for a bot to update the vote tallies in RfAs maybe twice a day? The vote tallies are almost always behind, and a bot could do that work easily. Finally, I'd like to award you the Barnstar of innovation for your wonderful 'bot work. Keep up your great work! Any chance of running the bot for longer or more often? I have deleted most of the stuff from the last run? Justinc 00:21, 25 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

pywikipedia questions[edit]

I have some questions about the pywikipedia bot which I have been using, you seem to be something of an oracle when it comes to these matters.

  1. When using touch.py you need to use an underscore instead of space. Is this a bug or needed (so you can put in extra arguments)?. For example:
    • python touch.py -ref:Template:Scotland subdivisions doesn't work, but
    • python touch.py -ref:Template:Scotland_subdivisions does.
  2. When running solve_disambiguation.py, there is a delay while I wait for the program to save my edit to the server. Is there a way for the next entry to be popped up while I'm waiting for the last edit to be sent, I'm on dial-up and it gets quite frustrating waiting.
  3. Back with touch.py. The program waits about 50 seconds (eg: "Sleeping for 55.5 seconds") between edits. Is this time reasonable? I understand that you can't bomb the server with edits, but almost a minute is slower than manual operation. Cheers for the help, --Commander Keane 16:01, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  1. Python would be reading the parameter, "-ref:Template:Scotland subdivisions" as two parameters passed into the parser. You will need to quote it like: python2.3 touch.py -ref:"Template:Scotland subdivisions"
  2. There is, but that would have involve changing the code. The way to properly do this would be to thread the code such that it went to save your edit while you got the next page. Unfortunately, I and many others, don't particularly like writing threading code because it's difficult and is a bother to maintain.
  3. The time restriction is set higher for unapproved bots supposely. The throttle exists for people to not be able to circumvent that and that the bots don't create a Denial-of-service attack. I'm sorry, I can not help you in this situation, send an email to the mailing list: wikibots-l@wikimedia.org
I hope that helps. --AllyUnion (talk) 21:45, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Bots[edit]

Thanks for the response. You do great work on here, and we all appreciate it. Could you clarify, though, whether the NotificationBot is working right now? If I remember correctly, it worked alright (with only a few bugs) last time. I would love to use it for Mind Benders. Thanks again. Not working at this time. --AllyUnion (talk) 03:17, 28 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks for letting me know. Do you have an approximate timetable of when it'll be back up again? Thanks again for your hard work. Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk | WS 15:58, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I'm told you may have a bot that works the miscellaneous delation page, so I wanted to let you know that I've moved it (for reasons briefly explained on the talk page) to Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion. Lather, rinse, repeat as necessary. Cheers! BD2412 T 01:43, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
