Danger! Freakout Bar filling![edit]

Isn't it weird how some people have nothing better to do than leave messages on other peoples' Talk pages just out of boredom or to see if it elicits a response?

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3[edit]

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.

Could I make you aware of User:OneSixOne, who has taken to persistantly removing a particular picture from the Michael Jackson page, possibly with the sole view of starting an edit war. Could you please take some degree of action? Cheers.--Crestville 18:03, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

VandalProof 1.2 Now Available[edit]

After a lenghty, but much-needed Wikibreak, I'm happy to announce that version 1.2 of VandalProof is now available for download! Beyond fixing some of the most obnoxious bugs, like the persistent crash on start-up that many have experienced, version 1.2 also offers a wide variety of new features, including a stub-sorter, a global user whitelist and blacklist, navigational controls, and greater customization. You can find a full list of the new features here. While I believe this release to be a significant improvement over the last, it's nonetheless nowhere near the end of the line for VandalProof. Thanks to Rob Church, I now have an account on test.wikipedia.org with SysOp rights and have already been hard at work incorporating administrative tools into VandalProof, which I plan to make available in the near future. An example of one such SysOp tool that I'm working on incorporating is my simple history merge tool, which simplifies the process of performing history merges from one article into another. Anyway, if you haven't already, I'd encourage you to download and install version 1.2 and take it out for a test-drive. As always, your suggestions for improvement are always appreciated, and I hope that you will find this new version useful. Happy editing! --AmiDaniel (talk) 02:21, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Block[edit]

Hi! I hope you do not find this message in the least bit offencive, it is intended as a well-meaning critique.

I e-mailed you an abbreviated version of this message, but received no reply. I don’t normally like to complain, but regardless I am, to say the least, disappointed with the way you handled this situation.

Obviously, I am well aware why I was blocked and I apologise for that, I didn't realise the rules on bad language were so strict and I will make every effort not to blow a fuse in future.

Firstly I would like to protest for being blocked for "unprovoked attacks". This is clearly not the case. Having removed the image on two or three occasions (which was restored by a number of users), I think OneSixOne then contacted me through his unsigned log-in address encouraging me to "go to war over" over the dispute. When challenged to provide a reason for his actions, the user simply mimicked what I had said in a further attempt to provoke me. He continued to remove the image after I issued a reasonable, well meaning comment on the Michael Jackson Talk Page. Frankly, I consider the continued and unjustified removal of the image provocation enough, without the above.

I realise my talk page records a few conflicts, but I can assure you I do not use bad language (or "personal attacks") without justification. I do find it hard to maintain my temper when a vandal is interfering with my work and clearly trying to annoy me. It is not even as if I flew off the handle in this particular case. When I have done before and, where clearly provoked, I have received a polite but stern warning. I always make a point of apologising once the issue has been resolved. In fact I came to you in order to end the situation before it came to more aggressive words being exchanged, but I'll deal with that below.

Secondly, I would like to protest against the way you employed your status as admin (at least in this instance). I realise to raise the issue of "respect for ones elders" is somewhat tempestuous, but at the very least I would thank you not to talk down to me as I would not do the same to you. Of course I am aware that the issue I came to you with in the first place was childish, but if it weren't for childish users like OneSixOne, we wouldn't need admin.

While I accept my use of language was contrary to some admins policy (though I regret I cannot accept childish - I'm Northern for Compo, Foggy & Clegg's sake!) the matter still stands that I came to you, an admin, with a genuine problem and you have taken no steps to resolve that problem. I understand the nature of the complaint was somewhat childish, but then I'm not the one removing the picture am I? To criticise - and indeed punish - me for attempting to correct the situation is a shocking misuse of the powers that were bestowed upon you in good faith.

A similar misuse of powers occurred in a transaction between us yesterday, where I attempted to remove the block notice. I was unaware that I was not free to remove message from my own Talk Page, and believed a vandal was behind the restorations. When I looked into the matter further I discovered that it was you and that rather than explain what you were doing and why you would rather I left your post, you chose to simply threaten me with blocking again. I did not even discover this threat until another user pointed out your reasoning. Frankly, prior to this I was prepared to remove the note a third time and would presumably have been blocked.

You also failed to block OneSixOne for his "personal attack" on me, which appears a bit hypocritical. He also removed the picture again. This IS vandalism and should be dealt with.

All in all I would like to apologise for my part in these regrettable proceedings (so for I an tell, the use of the word "cunt", and trying to resolve a situation involving vandalism), but I would urge you to consider your own role and the role of OneSixOne (vandalism, provocation, "personal attacks").

I hope we can resolve this situation. I intend full well to work my way onto your "Wikipedians I like" list and, for what it's worth, good luck with your exams. Cheers--Crestville 13:36, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Big Brother UK series 7[edit]

Hello there,

I got the message of the 3 Revert rule. Does this also place user:'9cds' in this position too?

He insists on reverting ALL of my updates to the page as if it were his own. If you read Mine and 9cds talk pages, please can you evaluate the situation.

It is all about Big brother pictures... He has added the wrong logo and insisted that I am in the wrong when it is quite clear which is the official logo from the official big brother website http://www.channel4.com/bigbrother and whether I can add the pictures of the contestants, which is perfectly viable according to the rules on their site for this:- http://www.channel4.com/bigbrother/about/fan-rules.html

Ever since I touched the page, and created another page in ignorance which he removed and redirected to his... I saw that he hadnt added any of the material that I had on the merged pages... I tried adding them in addition to his page and he said they were irrelevent and removed them.

I am in a battle with this guy that I don't even know because he thinks that the page is his to rule and accept and deny people's legit changes.

He has nominated all of my files for deleteion as well!

If you could please do something about him, that would be great.

I shall look forward to your return.

Thanks for any help

My moneys on Jimmy Tourettes.

I'll kill that gay asian bloke.

Yeah, I think I'd throw it away. Or flog it on E-bay. Whoever gets it will just be totally bemused.
That gay feller is awful! what was it he did last night? Threw a paddy and then sed its coz he was doing a bit of theater! That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard! How is anyone supposed to know he's going to randomly burst into "a bit of theather"? and whats theatrical about diving on some poor lass and scratching her? And he said he was the "leading lady". lol, what a prat. The tourettes man is quite nice though, and the chinese manc lass, who I thought would get right under me skin.--Crestville 18:31, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Other side of the pillow[edit]

I'm sorry, but why did you close this AfD? It started today. Please consider re-opening and allowing to properly close. Thanks. --badlydrawnjeff (WP:MEMES?) 21:21, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regardless of when an AfD starts, it can be closed at any time to an administrator's descretion. On this AfD we had a concensus to delete (with some speedy votes) and so it was closed early, and the article deleted. Thanks, — FireFox (UTC) 21:24, 27 May '06
What consensus? The page was only up for less than a day, instead of the 5 its supposed to, so it's tough to say as such. Secondly, can you point out where admin discretion factors in according to process? --badlydrawnjeff (WP:MEMES?) 21:27, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AfD of Pat Price[edit]

I'll have to ask how you came to the conclusion regarding your close on Pat Price. It appears straight votecounting was taken into affect rather than the arguments presented, many of which (such as three who claimed that there wasn't anything verifiable about him in defiance of evidence to the contrary, and one who cited a non-policy, non-guideline, non-sensical essay in his justification, which makes no sense given who he is. Given that he's mentioned in 25 books on remote viewing and appears to, in fact, be a notable crank and meets our standard guidelines, I'm just curious as to your rationale, thanks. --badlydrawnjeff (WP:MEMES?) 13:23, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If I had closed purely on votecounting, it would probably have been closed no consensus, with 6 deletes against 4 keeps. The AfD had already been relisted, and had therefore been open 10 days and needed closing. I read through the discussion and came to my 'conclusion' of deleting based on the information given by everybody, including you, and coming to my own desision. I don't really know how to explain the closure of an AfD - I closed it how I did because that seemed the most sensible thing to do. — FireFox 13:38, 28 May '06
I don't mind that you closed it, I am simply curious as to how you came to the delete decision. Since you admit that straight vote counting would have gotten a no consensus, and (at least by my view) not much was offered in terms of a reason to delete, I'm simply wondering what you used as a sensible interpretation. --badlydrawnjeff (WP:MEMES?) 13:54, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What made "delete" the most appropriate? I ask the question because i'm sure that there was a thought process going on regarding the close when you did it. --badlydrawnjeff (WP:MEMES?) 14:03, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
FWIW, Jeff has now listed this at WP:DRV, at which you may want to comment... Joe 16:47, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the closing, please note that I co-nominated the mirror World_Air_Forces and the redirect Largest Air Force. Please delete those articles as well. Thanks. --Mmx1 01:06, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
