BRD

Regarding the MSU–Mankato edits you've made:

You claim you don't need permission to edit to the correct naming convention per WP:BOLD. That's correct, BUT when someone reverts your edit you should DISCUSS it per WP:BRD. You were bold, someone reverted your edits, so then you should wait for a discussion to come to a consensus on it. Otherwise, you will get in an edit war and may be blocked. Corkythehornetfan Certainly. Discussion didn't occur. My edits were the initiation of the BRD cylce - not the conclusion. WP:BRD is ideal when appropriate. Remember WP:Ignore all rules? I've stated the reasoning for my edit. I've stated the source for my edit. Those are a part of the discussion. The sources are verifiable. But the discussion you and others are having are in the edit summary instead of the talk page. This is likely due to your closeness with/to the subject. I respect this. You may have made decisions in the past as to how/when/why you choose the naming convention you prefer. While this is great, it is alsoWP:Undue.

Beyond this, I want to indicate that there is no "MSU-Mankato". There is a Minnesota State University, Mankato. MSU could be the initials or nickname for Mississippi, Missouri, Moorehead, Morehead, and many others. This institution is commonly known as Minnesota State. We don't call 'the' Ohio State University, Ohio State University-Columbus in short in the Big Ten section or OSU - Columbus etc. Due to the complexity of naming for universities and colleges there are bound to be exceptions to the rule. 108.171.131.160 (talk) 21:49, 24 February 2015 (UTC)

No one is calling it MSU–Mankato; the are calling it Minnesota State–Mankato. The Ohio State University does not use the city name like Minnesota State University, Mankato or Minnesota State University Moorhead. There is a difference and you need to make sure of that when you state that. Because there are two institutions with the same name, but different athletic nicknames, they need to be established with the [–name] like it was. I disagree. As you previously posted there are numerous incorrect acronyms, references on wikipedia that aren't based on the current or past name, commonly used nickname or any verifiable source. Minnesota State is not Minnesota State-Mankato, or MSU-Mankato etc.

There are not two universities with the same name, that is factually incorrect. That there is another campus that also has a similar name (eg with the phrase Minnesota State University). But this does not imply it recieves the same naming convention or consideration. The name for that institution is Minnesota State University Moorhead (eg no coma, no dash). It was named chronologically after Minnesota State University, Mankato and is commonly known as Moorhead or MSU-Moorhead (numerous sources including the NSIC uses this convention which is most accurate, WP:verifiable and WP:notable). Additionally, WP:commonsense is that the references should all be the same to avoid confusion to readers. Some differences that I gleaned off the internet is that Minnesota State University, Mankato is twice as large (campus size, student body), has three times the size of the endowment, is higher ranked in NCAA Div II sports, has about 5 times the research expenditures in comparison to it's smaller MNSCU family member in Moorhead. There is a signficant difference between the two, for which should be given the same consideration as in my next point.

We call Ohio State, 'the' Ohio State. This in spite of the fact that there are numerous other campus branches and other independent campuses also called Ohio State xyz. The existence of a city name within the name is irrelevant. We don't call North Dakota State, North Dakota State University of Agriculture and Applied Sciences (it's legal name) anywhere else. Including in the athletics section. Another example, the University of Minnesota is actually the University of Minnesota Twin Cities (no coma, no dash). Yet in the Big Ten/B1N wikipage it's summarized by it's nickname: Minnesota following the convention University of xyz = xyz.

In addition to this, there are numerous examples of how this naming convention clearly fails to be applied equally. We don't call Wayne State College: Wayne State College-Nebraska on the NSIC page and navbox it's shortened to Wayne State Wildcats even though there is also a Wayne College and a Wayne State University. So, no, users aren't even applying that naming convention across the board even as it is. So, this isn't about convention that point falls flat.

It should remain as is. Previously the stable version of the NSIC name, the Minnesota State Mavericks page, the reference in the Minnesota State University, Mankato page, the NSIC website references, some newspaper references etc all refered to Minnesota State. So, the navbox should be Minnesota State Mavericks
