Jonathan Harris (born on January 19,1990), known for his stage Jon Harris, is an American Hip Hop recording artist, song writer, record producer, musical engineer, and entrepreneur. He is the founder of Living Life Our Way Entertainment. Jon is a self-taught music artist who gained recognition for his musical talents after graduating college releasing Destiny's Calling (2012) and Destiny's Calling 2 (2015) mixtapes.
Early Life[edit]
Harris was born on January 19,1990 in New York City, New York but moved to the upper Westchester County town of Cortlandt Manor, NY at a young age where he grew up.[1][2] He received his bachelor's degree in business management from Pace University in Pleasantville, NY after graduating from Walter Panas High School[3]
Introduction to Making Music[edit]
Jon started making music after being introduced to FL Studio, previously known as Fruity Loops, in his middle school general music class which he took because unlike his siblings he did not join the school's, band, orchestra, or chorus. He found an interest in the digital audio workstation but at the time he only made simple melodies without the idea of creating anything serious. It wasn't until high school that he made his first CD under the stage name J-Holla, although his first project was universally disliked. He made a few CDs and he found them in the garbage around his high school.[4] Despite the negative the reception he continued to make music. After graduating college he released his first official mixtape "Destiny's Calling" in 2012 and the sequel mixtape "Destiny's Calling 2" in 2015 on Datpiff.[5]
Career[edit]
2012 - 2015: Mixtapes[edit]
Destiny's Calling is the first official mixtape for Jon, who released it under the name J-Holla, to the music platform Datpiff.[6] It was released on June 08, 2012. Although it was released in 2012 he began working on it in 2010 during his time in college. The project was a milestone being that all of his previous work up to that point primarily used music he got from off of the internet. Destiny's Calling was his first musical project where he produced the entire mixtape himself. Along with being the only producer, Harris wrote, recorded, and engineered all of his work by himself.[7] After being ignored by the major music companies he decided release it as a project to showcases his growth.
On October 31, 2015 Jon released the sequel "Destiny's Calling 2" with the same goal in mind; to show his improvement from the first mixtape. This mixtape was produced with upgraded equipment as the first mixtape suffered from hardware issues. Along with his equipment upgrade, the project was also a means to show how he has improved and grown as a writer. He began to open up and speak more about his life, his philosophies, and experiences.[7]
2018 - Present Singles[edit]
Being a self-taught artist learning from scratch and without any musical background or formal lesson, Harris wanted to learn as much as he could before releasing his music commercially. After the success and positive reception of his Destiny's Calling 2 mixtape he started working on music to release commercially. On December 14, 2018 Jon released his first song Big which was recognized for its massive grandiose sound paired with the energetic and thought provoking lyrics his charismatic rap style brings. The song was compared to that of JAY-Z, Kendrick Lamar and Childish Gambino.[8][9] Along with releasing singles to increasing his name recognition Harris has been performing throughout the tri-state area. In 2020 he made an appearance at Pianos for a live show to promote his music.[10] Jon then went on to release "I Don't Wanna Hear it" on March 27, 2020. It was his way of protesting the status quo with conventional dialogue and how he feels there is no depth in conversation anymore. With only being his second song released commercially it had one hundred streams in the first week which spiked to over one thousand the second, to over nine thousand in the third week.[11] Jon's third single, "Think of Me" was released on April 23, 2021 continuing to deliver music his a personal feel to it. He got inspiration from previous relationships, both romantic and plutonic. It's a song about connections and missing people you feel you've connected with. Along with his personal experiences with the idea of connecting with a person, Jon took inspiration from the movie Lost in Translation.[12] Due to other projects Harris was working on he took a break from releasing music. However, following the success of Think of Me gaining dozens of thousands of streams Harris released "Great" on October 21, 2022 enthusiastically returning to his focus on releasing music after taking some time away.[13] Much like "big" the song is less focused on a theme and more focused on delivering raw talent combining imposing musical production with over the top lyrics.[14]
