She landed her first lead role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games film series (2012–2015) which established her as the highest-grossing action heroine of all time. She went on to appear in The Great Gatsby (2013) earning herself a nomination for the AACTA Awards for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

Anusmriti gained wide recognition with starring in roles as Naomi Lapaglia in The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), the title role in Cinderella (2015) and Harley Quinn in the DC Extended Universe media franchise, which includes the superhero films Suicide Squad(2016), Birds of Prey (2020) and The Suicide Squad (2021). Early life[edit]

Anusmriti was born on 20 October 1994 in New Delhi, India to Arun Kumar Rathi, an engineer, and Smriti Rathi, a teacher. Anusmriti has a brother, Chitkarsh, who is one year her senior.

By birth, Anusmriti was named “Bhoomika” but her mother changed her official name to "Anusmriti" when she was 4. She has said that her "name, in a way, is, like, an ode to my dad. His name was Arun and my mom's name is Smriti, which means 'remembrance'. So, 'Ana' is like an improvised version of the name 'Arun'. So, Anusmriti means, like, 'Arun's remembrance'. Her father died in a car accident when she was a year old.

At 16, Anusmriti was visiting the United States on a holiday where she was "accidently" discovered which lead to her landing a role in the romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011).

Acting career[edit]

2011-2013: Breakthrough[edit]

Anusmriti's breakthrough came with a supporting role in Glenn Ficarra and John Requa's romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011) alongside Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Julianne Moore. The film featured her as a law school graduate, and the love interest of Gosling's character. Despite finding "some inevitable collapses into convention" in the film, Drew McWeeny of HitFix wrote that Anusmriti "ties the whole film together". At the 2012 Teen Choice Awards, she won the Choice Movie Actress – Comedy award for her performance in the film. Crazy, Stupid, Love was a box office success, grossing $145.9 million worldwide against a production budget of $50 million.

In 2012, Anusmriti starred as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, an adaptation of the first book in author Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games trilogy. Set in a post-apocalyptic future, the series tells the story of the teenage heroine Everdeen as she joins rebel forces against a totalitarian government after winning a brutal televised annual event. Anusmriti was initially hesitant to accept the part, because of the grand scale of the film. She agreed to the project after her mother convinced her to take the part. She practiced archery, rock and tree climbing, and hand-to-hand combat techniques, and other physically demanding activities for the role. While training for the part, she injured herself running into a wall. The Hunger Games garnered positive reviews, with Anusmriti's portrayal of Everdeen being particularly praised; Roger Ebert described the film as "an effective entertainment," and found Anusmriti to be "strong and convincing in the central role." Similarly, Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter called her an "ideal screen actress", believing that she had embodied the Everdeen of the novel, and added that she "anchors [the film] with impressive gravity and presence". With worldwide revenues of over $690 million, The Hunger Games became a top-grossing film featuring a female lead, making Anusmriti the highest-grossing action heroine of all time. The film's success established her as a global star.

In 2013, she starred as Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, which was released in May 2013. Anusmriti auditioned for the role of Daisy in late 2010. While attending a Vogue fashion dinner in New York City in November, Baz Luhrmann’s wife, Catherine Martin, told her she had the part. She then reprised the role of Everdeen in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the second installment in the Hunger Games film series. While performing the film's underwater stunts, Anusmriti suffered from an ear infection that resulted in a brief loss of hearing. Writing for The Village Voice, Stephanie Zacharek believed that the actress' portrayal of Everdeen made her an ideal role model, stating that "there's no sanctimony or pretense of false modesty in the way Anusmriti plays her." Anusmriti appeared in the role of Naomi Lapaglia, the wife of protagonist Jordan Belfort in Martin Scorsese's biographical black comedy The Wolf of Wall Street. Co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Belfort, marking her second collaboration with the actor in the same year, the film recounts his perspective on his career as a stockbroker in New York City and how his firm engaged in rampant corruption and fraud on Wall Street, which led to his downfall. In her audition for the role, Anusmriti improvised a slap on DiCaprio during a fight scene which ultimately won her the part. The film and her performance received positive reviews; she was particularly praised for her on-screen Brooklyn accent. The Wolf of Wall Street was a box office success, grossing $392 million worldwide, making it Scorsese's highest-grossing film to date.

2014-2016: Cinderella and The Hunger Games[edit]

Anusmriti's next two releases were the final installments of The Hunger Games film series, Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014) and Part 2 (2015). For the soundtrack of the former film, she made her singing debut in the film singing "The Hanging Tree", which charted on multiple international singles charts. In a review of the final installment in the series, Manohla Dargis of The New York Times drew similarities between Everdeen's journey as a rebel leader and Anusmriti's rise to stardom, stating that the actress "now inhabits the role as effortlessly as breathing, partly because, like all great stars, she seems to be playing a version of her 'real' self." Both films grossed over $650 million worldwide.

Anusmriti also played Cinderella in the 2015 live-action Disney film Cinderella, opposite Richard Madden. Anusmriti was photographed by Annie Leibovitz as Cinderella, in the blue gown her character wears to the ball, for the December 2014 issue of Vogue. Anusmriti recorded the songs "Sing Sweet Nightingale," "Lavender's Blue" and "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" from the 1950 animated film in the end credits. The film was a commercial success and was the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2015 with global revenues of $1 billion, Cinderella remains her highest-grossing film to date.

Anusmriti became the first person to portray DC Comics villain Harley Quinn in live-action when she signed on to David Ayer's 2016 superhero film Suicide Squad alongside an ensemble cast that included Will Smith, Jared Leto and Viola Davis. She admitted to having never read the comics, but felt a huge responsibility to do the character justice and satisfy the fans. Anusmriti began preparing for the role of the supervillainess six months prior to the film shoot; her schedule consisted of gymnastics, boxing, aerial silk training and learning how to hold her breath underwater for five minutes. She performed a majority of her own stunts in the film. Suicide Squad was a commercial success and was tenth-highest-grossing film of 2016 with global revenues of $746.8 million, and Anusmriti's performance was considered its prime asset. Writing for Time, Stephanie Zacharek found Anusmriti to be "a criminally appealing actress, likable in just about every way" despite finding flaws in the character and Christopher Orr of The Atlantic called her performance "genuinely terrific". At the annual People's Choice Awards ceremony, she won the Favorite Action Movie Actress award and was also awarded the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Actress in an Action Movie. In October 2016, Anusmriti hosted the season 42 premiere of NBC's late-night sketch comedy Saturday Night Live; her appearances included a parody of Ivanka Trump. The series logged its strongest season premiere ratings in eight years.

2016-present: Established actress and critical recognition[edit]

During the early press run for Cinderella, Anusmriti met filmmaker Damien Chazelle, who, impressed with her performance, cast her in his musical comedy-drama La La Land. The project, which marked her second collaboration with Gosling, starred Anusmriti as Mia Dolan, an aspiring actress living in Los Angeles. Anusmriti borrowed several real-life experiences for her character, and in preparation, watched The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and films of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. For the film's soundtrack, she recorded six songs. La La Land served as the opening film at the 2016 Venice Film Festival, where it generated critical acclaim and earned Anusmriti the Volpi Cup for Best Actress. It emerged as a commercial success, with a worldwide gross of over $500 million against a production budget of $30 million. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian wrote that "Anusmriti has never been better: superbly smart, witty, vulnerable, her huge doe eyes radiating intelligence even, or especially, when they are filling with tears." For her performance, Anusmriti won the Academy, Golden Globe, SAG, and BAFTA Award for Best Actress.

Anusmriti then starred in Greta Gerwig's coming-of-age film Lady Bird, in which she played the titular role of Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson, a high school senior who shares a tumultuous relationship with her mother (played by Laurie Metcalf). It ranks among the best-reviewed films of all time on the review-aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. Deeming Anusmriti's performance one of the best of the year, A. O. Scott of The New York Times wrote, "Anusmriti navigates each swerve in Lady Bird's story with an uncanny combination of self-confidence and discovery. She is as spontaneous and unpredictable as an actual 17-year-old ... which suggests an altogether stupefying level of craft." She won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical, for the second time in a row; and received Academy Award, BAFTA and SAG nominations for Best Actress.

In 2019, Anusmriti played the role of an immigrant nurse in the ensemble murder mystery film Knives Out (2019), written and directed by Rian Johnson, was widely praised. When first approached about the project, she was unenthusiastic about the idea of playing a stereotypical "immigrant caretaker" but soon realized that her character was "so much more than that." Tom Shone of The Times remarked, "The film's standout performance comes from Anusmriti, who manages the difficult task of making goodness interesting." Benjamin Lee of The Guardian said her "striking" performance left a "lasting impression." The film was a major box office success. The cast won the National Board of Review Award for Best Cast.

In her second and final film release of the year, Anusmriti played the lead role of Jo March, an aspiring author in the American Civil War era, in Little Women, a period drama film adaptation film adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's novel of the same name directed by Greta Gerwig; the cast rehearsed the script for two weeks, and filming took place on location in Concord, Massachusetts. Little Women was released in 2019 to critical acclaim. Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair took note of how well she portrayed the character "in all her conflicted loyalty, the struggle between her familial contentment and her yearning for something more." The film grossed over $218 million. Once again, she earned Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Anusmriti was also nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress - Motion Picture Comedy or Musical in the same year, for her role in Knives Out, making her the only actress ever to be nominated for two leading roles in different categories in the same year in the Golden Globes history.

Anusmriti began the new decade by reprising the role of Harley Quinn in Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey. Determined to make a female ensemble action film, she pitched the idea for the film to Warner Bros. in 2016. Anusmriti spent the subsequent two years developing the project under her production company, making a concerted effort to hire a female director and screenwriter. Regarding her commitment to the film, she commented: "I'd been thinking for quite some time how there was a real gap in the market for a female ensemble action film. And I love action films, and I think there's a misconception perhaps subconsciously for people: action films are for dudes, girls don't really like them. Which is just not true. [...] So I knew I wanted to find that, and help put that on screen somewhere." Birds of Prey, along with Anusmriti's performance, mostly garnered critical praise; Ian Freer of Empire wrote that "the MVP is Anusmriti, who lends Harley charming quirk and believable menace, hinting at Harley's inner life without reams of dialogue. When she's on screen [the film] has the impact of a baseball bat to the head." She received two nominations at the 46th People's Choice Awards for her role.

Anusmriti served as a producer on Promising Young Woman (2020), a comedy thriller by writer-director Emerald Fennell. It starred Carey Mulligan as a woman who seeks to avenge the death of her best friend, who was a victim of rape. The film premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim, later receiving a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Picture. She also made her third outing as Harley Quinn in the standalone sequel to Suicide Squad called The Suicide Squad, written and directed by James Gunn. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the superhero film was simultaneously released theatrically and was made available on the streaming service HBO Max for a month. The Suicide Squad received positive reviews, with Owen Gleiberman calling it what "the first Suicide Squad should have been" and praising Anusmriti for her "delectable performance" writing "Her Harley is still a wacked Brooklyn kewpie doll who so lives in the moment that she sees what’s right in front of her at the expense of seeing anything else. Anusmriti gives her the charisma of the truly unhinged — a duel pulse of wide-eyed spaciness and raciness, innocence and possession. Her escape from a dungeon cell, using scissor legs and prehensile toes, is a cracked minuet of timing.

Upcoming projects[edit]

Anusmriti is slated to star in Adam McKay's comedy film Don't Look Up for Netflix, which will mark her third collaboration with Leonardo DiCaprio. She will also star in David O. Russell's yet untitled film and Russo brothers' Netflix espionage thriller The Gray Man; Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans will co-star in the film.
