Speedy deletion of Al Williams article

You removed the suggestion for speedy deletion of the Al Williams article, saying that he claims notability. The closest the article comes to claiming notability is where he says he may have an art show in London in 2006. The external links on the article go to his own small website and DeviantArt page. He lists his "major works" but gives no explanation of why they are notable. He's filled the article with self-aggrandizing phrases. If you check the article's history, a large part is written by "AmAlanWilliams" which appears to be his hotmail email address (as listed on his deviantart page), it's basically a vanity article. Other pages that link to this article is one concerning one of his college friends, Richard H. Proffitt, and articles where Alan Williams has added himself to the article - Whiston, Merseyside and Mail art. He is also mistakenly linked to at the Arachnophobia (film) article where he is credited for writing the story for a film that was released when he would have been aged 5.

I'm still fairly new to wikipedia, but it seems to me that, if anything, the article should be on his userpage. If this isn't a candidate for speedy deletion, should it be listed as AfD? BobBobtheBob 12:21, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

Fair use images

Hi, I noticed you've been adding {{fairuse}} to images, such as Image:John Waterbury.jpg. As you may have noticed from the template's text, this is a deprecated tag, since "fair use" is not a generic escape clause, it's only valid for specific kinds of uses. So we have {{Non-free fair use in}}, where you could say that this image is valid in John Waterbury but not elsewhere, or {{publicity}}, which is often true of official photos posted by institutions. In any case, those of us emptying out the fair use category (an Augean task if ever there was one!) would sure appreciate it if you didn't add more images in. Thanks! Moving articles on afd

When you move an article that's on afd, could you please create a redirect from Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/NewTitle to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/OldTitle instead of moving the afd discussion? My bot can account for redirected afd discussions automatically, but it can't detect moved ones, and there isn't really an easy way to make it do so. —Cryptic (talk) 15:49, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

Hello, Aranda56 -- I wanted to say thank you for noticing that the Notes section on the Che Guevara page had been completely re-done and for removing the "Cleanup" flag that someone had placed there a few days ago. Leaving, the RfA, etc.

I would like to first echo comments made on my talk page by David [2]. His comments are spot-on. Second, I'm going to reiterate what I said on your talk page earlier; you are an asset to Wikipedia. I want to encourage you to understand that becoming an admin is not a badge of honor. It is not a recognition for a job well done. It's not a certificate saying you passed review, or any other kind of imaginable honor. If you take it like that, then you will be sorely disappointed on becoming an admin because there are precious few "honors" past adminship, and getting another one is unlikely to happen. You would become depressed at not getting another "honor". Adminship isn't even a promotion per se; you would just be granted software rights to do certain things you couldn't do before.

With particular regards to leaving; I understand your reasons. But, I am not sure you personally believe the basis of those reasons if you thought about it for a bit. You are a reasonable person. You know that ArbCom elections mean being elected for a three year post. You would not put yourself up for ArbCom if you didn't feel you could fulfill the duty given you if elected. Thus, I think you did think of your upcoming time constraints and felt you could handle it anyways. So, I do think you have the time to still be involved in Wikipedia. Plus, I think being involved here will help you academically anyways. I'll lay odds your English skills are getting better! :)

Nobody says you have to be wildly active to contribute to Wikipedia or even be an admin. You've been editing a LOT lately. You can reduce the amount of time you spent here, up your grades, get your arm/toe taken care of, etc., and still be a fantastic asset to Wikipedia. A large number of people really want you here.

I'll make you an offer. I've never made an offer like this before. My guidelines for admin nomination are probably the highest around. Now, I'm not saying I will nominate you. But, I am offering to work very closely with you to set you up for the next RfA. I will be very happy to conduct periodic reviews of your work, say once a week, and make comments as appropriate to correct errors and point out how something might have been done better in my opinion. I'll do as much as I can to foster you along towards the next RfA so you are ready for it. When, after three months have passed, you go up for RfA, I won't nominate you but if you work with me and take most of my advice I will give you a very supportive vote, citing good work and the experience I had with you over the prior few months. For better or worse, my vote at RfA seems to carry some weight. If I vote in favor of you, I am confident several other people will vote in favor as well.

Now, first piece of advice; do NOT accept the next RfA that comes your way without first letting me review your answers and having an opportunity to discuss it with you. Second, don't accept an RfA until at least April 10th. Third, don't leave. We need you around here too much. Please! No, scatch that..when I say please, I mean please in THIS BIG of a way. Ok? Deal?

Now wait...before you respond...DON'T respond until you've had 24 hours to mull over this and wind down from the withdrawn RfA #4. You'll be much calmer and happier. THEN tell me we have a deal :) --Durin 03:24, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
