Este Arielle Haim (born March 14, 1986) is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and composer from Los Angeles. She is the bassist and a vocalist of the American pop rock band Haim, which also consists of her two younger sisters, Danielle Haim and Alana Haim. In addition to being in Haim, Este composed the score for the 2021 Netflix miniseries Maid and the 2022 film Cha Cha Real Smooth, both with Chris Stracey.

Early life[edit]

Este Arielle Haim was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, California to a Jewish family.[1] Her Israeli-born father Mordechai ("Moti") and her mother Donna were both musical; though he had been a professional soccer player in Israel, Moti also played drums, while Donna won a contest on The Gong Show in the 1970s singing a Bonnie Raitt song.[2][3][4] While her younger sister Danielle showed an aptitude for the guitar at a young age, Moti made the decision that Este would be more suited to the bass, buying her a second hand Fender for $50.[5] The two elder sisters, Este and Danielle, began performing with the pop group Valli Girls in 2005. They released a few songs on soundtrack and compilation albums under that name, but left the group shortly after an appearance at the 2005 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.[6]

Haim[edit]

In 2007, Este and her sisters formed a band of their own known as Haim. They released an EP called Forever in 2012, and appeared at many music festivals, which brought them to the attention of Jay-Z. They were later signed to Roc Nation, and were one of the featured artists at Jay Z's Made in America festival.[7]

Days Are Gone[edit]

Haim released their first studio album titled Days Are Gone in September 2013. It was a commercial success.[citation needed] In order to promote the album they appeared as musical guests on Saturday Night Live on November 23, 2013. They performed the songs "The Wire" and "Don't Save Me".[8]

Something to Tell You[edit]

Haim released their second studio album titled Something to Tell You in July 2017.

Personal life[edit]

At age 14, Este was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and was told that being a touring musician would be next to impossible. She uses an insulin pump and CGM to manage her condition.[9] In 2018, Este was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease and subsequently began taking medication for it.[10] During Haim's set at Glastonbury in 2013, Este collapsed backstage mid-performance after having taken insulin and forgotten to eat. Este eventually came to and finished the set, albeit sitting down.[11] Haim's song "Hallelujah" from their album Women in Music Pt. III features a verse by Este about her experience with diabetes.[12]
