On May 12, 2012, Higa announced through posts on her Twitter account that the she was placing Polar Bear Café on indefinite hiatus in response to a dispute with Shogakukan over the anime adaptation of the series. Higa claimed that production on the series had commenced without her having signed contracts, that her requests to participate in the adaptation's development were ignored, and the editorial staff at Shogakukan responsible for the manga were providing content approvals for the adaptation without her knowledge or input. The dispute was resolved the following month – Shogakukan's media division assumed oversight of the Polar Bear Café manga after the original staff issued an apology, and Higa began having input on the anime adaptation's character designs and episode scripts – and the series resumed serialization in the September issue of Flowers.
