Weaponry in District 9[edit]

The film features many weapons and vehicles produced by the South African arms industry including the R5 and Vektor CR-21 assault rifles, Denel NTW-20 20mm sniper rifle, BXP submachinegun, Casspir armored personnel carrier, Ratel infantry fighting vehicle, Rooikat tank, Atlas Oryx helicopter and militarized Toyota Hilux. San Antonio Healthcare Companies[edit]

The Healthcare and Biosciences Industry continues as a dominant force in the San Antonio economy. Its economic impact in 2007 was $16.3 billion. The industry paid more than $4.8 billion in wages and salaries to 116,417 employees in 2007. One of every seven San Antonio employees works in the Healthcare and Bioscience Industry. The Healthcare and Bioscience industry has added over 23,000 net new jobs over the past decade.[4] The Greater San Antonio area is home to more than 40 hospitals, including four major hospital systems, with a total of more than 5,000 staffed beds.[5]

  • Affiliated Computer Services Inc (ACS) is a Dallas-based company whose seven San Antonio offices employees 700 people working on a range of customer-service contracts that support insurance, health care, information technology and Medicaid/Medicare contract work. In March 2009 ACS announced plans to hire an additional 500 staff.[6]
  • AdviTech Inc is a San Antonio-based company that in 2009 received $2.5 million from the Texas Emerging Technology Fund to help commercialize products to address spacial disorientation, vertigo and motion sickness in airplanes and vehicles.[7]
  • AirStrip Technologies LP, is a San Antonio-based company that has designed and built a platform that delivers to physician smartphones critical patient information including fetal heart tracings, maternal contraction patterns and other patient-monitoring data from the intensive care units, as well as physician and nursing documentation from those clinical areas.[8] AirStrip’s remote technology is in use in nearly 100 U.S. hospitals.[9]
  • American Stem Cell is a San Antonio-based biopharmaceutical company that is developing an enzyme treatment for cord blood stem cells. The company received $2.5 million from the Texas Emerging Technology Fund to enhance stem cells’ ability to hone in on and graft to targeted diseased organs, accelerate cell and organ regeneration, and improve the survival and quality of life for patients.[10]
  • Azaya Therapeutics Inc is a San Antonio-based emerging pharmaceutical company. In 2009 the Texas Emerging Technology Fund announced a $1 million investment in Azaya to help the company commercialize a new treatment for fighting cancerous tumors.[12]
  • Barrio Comprehensive Family Health Care is a federally qualified health center. This designation allows it to qualify for federal funding, reduced physician’s insurance, larger Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements and participate in a low-cost prescription drug program. It will receive $1.3 million worth of federal funding over two years to expand the level of health services in San Antonio.[15]
  • BCFS is a San Antonio-based organization that provides medical special needs sheltering and critical emergency support services to state and local governments during disasters.[16]
  • Bexar County Medical Society includes more than 4,000 physicians, representing virtually every specialty and sub-specialty. It was the first county medical society in Texas and the eighth largest in the U.S.[17]
  • Bio2Medical is a San Antonio-based company that received $1 million from Texas Emerging Technology Fund to commercialize a novel vena cava filter catheter designed to help critically ill patients who are at risk of developing pulmonary embolism.[18]
  • BioComp Pharma is a San Antonio-based company that was formed by Mission Pharmacal Co in 2008 to distribute biocomparable drug products that are less expensive than their prescription equivalent products.[19]
  • BioMed SA is a non-profit, membership-based organization, supported in part by Bexar County and the City of San Antonio. It's mission is to To organize and promote San Antonio's healthcare and bioscience assets to accelerate growth of the sector and enhance San Antonio's reputation as a city of science and health.[20]
  • Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) is being consolidated with the city’s U.S. Air Force hospital, Wilford Hall Medical Center, to become the largest of two national military medical centers.[21]
  • CEDRA Clinical Research, LLC is an Austin-based company offering Phase I-IV clinical research and bioanalytical services with a 250-bed clinical research center in San Antonio.[25]
  • Center for Health Care Services is a community-based mental health center that provides services to more than 30,000 children and adults with mental health, development disabilities and chemical dependency.[26]
  • Christus Santa Rosa Health Care System is a San Antonio-based Catholic faith-based nonprofit health and wellness ministry.[27] It has more than 3,200 employees, including 1,600 physicians, and in 2009 generated operating revenues in excess of $530 million.[28] It was founded in 1869 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.[29]
  • DPT Laboratories is a San Antonio-based company that specializes in contract drug development and pharmaceutical manufacturing services of semi-solid and liquid over-the-counter and prescription drugs. The company also has facilities in Lakewood, N.J.[30][31] The company is a unit of DFB Pharmaceuticals in Fort Worth.[32]
  • Evestra, Inc is a San Antonio-based pharmaceutical company focusing on female reproductive health.[33]
  • Foundation Surgical Hospital of San Antonio is a private hospital in the South Texas Medical Center with 20 private suites and four state-of-the-art operating suites. Surgeons specialize in bariatric surgery, general surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, pain management and spinal surgery. The hospital opened in 2007.[35]

  • Kinetic Concepts, Inc (KCI) is a San Antonio-based, global medical technology company that discovers, develops, manufactures and markets therapies and products for the wound-care, tissue regeneration and therapeutic support-systems markets.[40] The company employs 6,700 people and markets its products in more than 20 countries.[41]
  • Medtronic, Inc is a Minneapolis-based Fortune 500 medical technology company. It operates a Diabetes Therapy Management and Education Center at The Overlook at The Rim. As of Nov 2009 the company had hired 200 people to staff the center and plans to hire 1400 staff by 2014.[42]
  • MedTrust LLC is a San Antonio-based company that staffs military and private facilities in 10 states. In 2009 it was awarded a three year, $87 million contract to provide medical staffing services to all registered nurse positions at the new San Antonio Military Medical Center.[43]
  • Methodist Healthcare operates 24 facilities in the South Texas region, including eight acute care hospitals.[44] It is the largest hospital system in the region.[45]
  • Molina Healthcare of Texas is a San Antonio-based subsidiary of Molina Healthcare Inc of Long Beach, Califorinia. Molina Healthcare of Texas provides health plan benefits for 31,000 members in San Antonio, Houston, Laredo and surrounding areas.[46] Molina Healthcare of Texas is the only Medicaid health plan in Texas accredited by the National Committee on Quality Assurance.[47]
  • Morningside Ministries is San Antonio-based not-for-profit, faith-based senior care organization. Its three campuses serve more than 800 individuals.[48]
  • Nix Health Care System operates an active hospital along the San Antonio River Walk. The historic structure was built during the late 1920s.[49] The Nix Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center, in operation since 1986, is certified by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society as one of the nation's top hyperbaric centers. More than 6,000 medical professionals have traveled around the world to train at the Hyperbaric Center.[50]
  • OncoVista Innovative Therapies Inc is a San Antonio-based biopharmaceutical company engaged in the development and commercialization of targeted cancer therapies.[51] AdnaGen AG, is a German subsidiary of OncoVista.[52]
  • Pronucleotein is a San Antonio-based company that received $1 million from the Texas Emerging Technology Fund to commercialize a suite of products for rapid on-site food safety testing. The company is working on a portable hand-held device that relies on fluorescent assays that can detect pathogens in food and water.[54]
  • San Antonio Metropolitan Health District is the public health agency charged by State law, City code, and County resolution with the responsibility for providing public health programs in San Antonio and unincorporated areas of Bexar County. Services include health code enforcement, food inspections, immunizations, clinical services, environmental monitoring, disease control, health education, dental health, emergency preparedness and issuance of birth and death certificates to the public.[55]
  • Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research is an independent biomedical research institution. Local scientists are working to fight cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer, psychiatric disorders, problems of pregnancy, AIDS, hepatitis and a host of other infectious diseases.[56]
  • START (South Texas Accelerated Research Therapeutics) manages a Phase I clinical trials program, where more than 40 promising new drugs are being tested for the first time in patients.[58] The START Center for Cancer Care provides oncology research and treatment.[59] The local center has 40 beds dedicated to research trials.[60]
  • Susan G. Komen for the Cure is a Dallas-based nonprofit organization and the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world. Each year, the group sponsors the Komen Race for the Cure in San Antonio. In 2009 Komen awarded $600,000 to the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio to examine whether a certain high blood-pressure drug might be an effective treatment against breast cancer.[61]
  • Targeted Technology Fund I is a San Antonio-based venture capital fund formed to capitalize on growth opportunities in the biomedical sector in Texas, Alabama, Colorado and Georgia.[62]
  • Texas Healthcare and Bioscience Institute is an Austin-based organization that works with government and industry leaders to recruit the life sciences to Texas and to promote effective government legislation on the behalf of the industry at the state and federal level.[63][64]
  • University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) will receive $500,000 over five years from the University of Texas System to do research in biosensors and regenerative medicine. UTSA will use the funds to integrate common areas of interest between its existing biomedical engineering, electrical engineering and chemistry Ph.D. programs.[65]
  • University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio is an institute of health science education and research. It is ranked as the 14th largest medical school in the United States in terms of enrollment.[66] The Health Science Center educates and trains physicians, dentists, nurses, scientists and health professionals.[67] It operates six campuses in San Antonio, Laredo, Harlingen and Edinburg.[68]
  • Urology San Antonio has 180 employees, including 27 urologists and a radiation oncologists, and nine locations in San Antonio.[69]
  • Vidacare Corp is a San Antonio-based company that specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing advanced intraosseous technology. The company was founded in 2001 with technology developed by and licensed from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.[70] The company’s new OnControl Bone Marrow System is undergoing a validation study.[71]

  • VITAS Healthcare operates in San Antonio caring for terminally ill patients. Miami-based VITAS owns and operates 49 hospice programs in 16 states and the district of columbia.[73]
