The Global Award for Human Rights Journalism was established in 1999and first warded in 2000. It is in recognition of the immense importance of journalists around the world. The award is for an outstanding article in the media - written anywhere in the world - that has raised awareness of and contributed to a deeper understanding of human rights.

The award is a chance for non-governmental organisations to nominate an article that has raised awareness and understanding of human rights issues whether local, national or international.

Each NGO can nominate a maximum of three entries each. The closing date for entries is Thursday 19 February 2004.
