Exercise Balikatan

Jolo Island, Philippines (Feb. 20, 2007) - Builder 2nd Class Chad Smith, right, assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Three and Pfc. Marlon Seytes, a Philippine Marine from the 5th Marines, work together to build a new school in the village of Taglibi during Balikatan 2007. Balikatan means "Shouldering the load together," and is an annual exercise for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) supported by the U.S. Military. It focuses on teamwork during humanitarian, medical and engineering projects throughout the Philippines. Balikatan ensures the AFP and U.S. personnel can work together in crisis and non-crisis circumstances while maintaining the U.S./Philippines security partnership. Exercise Balikatan is a joint, multinational military and humanitarian exercise lead by Phillipine and United States armed forces annually to promote mutual understanding and cohesion between the two countries, as well as foster peace and security in the region.

SUBIC BAY (Feb. 19, 2008) A landing signal officer directs a helicopter to the flight deck of the amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2). The Essex Expeditionary Strike Group is in the Philippines for the annual bilateral exercise Balikatan (BK 08) between the Republic of the Philippines and the United States. During BK-08, the Essex Expeditionary Strike group will conduct humanitarian assistance and training activities with service members from the Republic of the Philippines to improve maritime security, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts.
