Helene Papenek (née Goldstern, born June 10, 1901) was an Austrian American individual psychologist and psychiatrist.[2]

Early life[edit]

Helene Goldstern was born in 1901 to Samuel and Marie Goldstern, who in 1915 acquired the Fango Sanatorium in Vienna.[3]

Career[edit]

In 1926, one year after earning her doctorate from the University of Vienna, Helene married Ernst Papanek, who she met due to her involvement with the Social Democratic Party of Austria. The couple became part of the inner circle of Alfred Adler due to their shared political sympathies.[2]

In 1952, Papanek succeded Emil Froschels as the director of the Institute for Individual Psychology, an organization affiliated with the Alfred Adler Consultation Center and Mental Hygiene Clinic in New York City.[4]
