Balthier[edit]

Dave Smith of IGN noted that while he may not be the actual protagonist of XII, " he says he's the hero, and he makes a pretty convincing case for it" by how he routinely upstages the other characters "thanks to a combination of sharp looks and even sharper wit." He further emphasized that while the game's plot had plenty of twists, the best ones fell to Balthier as did the best lines of dialogue, something he felt fitting for a character that could be seen as the game's leading man.[1]

Sorceress[edit]

Jason Schreier of Kotaku was particularly vocal about the sorceress' design, arguing that she appeared to be designed by "a 14-year-old boy" and that "perhaps game development studios should stop hiring teenagers".[2] After the post received backlast, Schreier explained further and stated while he intended the previous article to solely be a "snarky" comment, he described the character's design as "embarrassing", and in his eyes helped perpetuate a negative stereotype of Japanese video games that they were mainly a "boys' club", a mindset he felt pervaded the gaming industry for decades. He further felt that similarly sexualized male characters were not comparable, as to him they represented a "power fantasy", while he saw the sorceress's design as "juvenile". He further stated that while he had no intention to call for the character to be censored, in regards to her design "I think it repels more than it attracts. It doesn't challenge viewers in interesting ways. And I don't consider it beautiful."[3]
