Robert E. Lee Blvd is an extremely long street with many curves running through the planning district 5 of New Orleans La.[1] The street goes over many creeks of water. Then spits into two distinctive streets going east. Robert E. Lee Blvd. is amongst many other streets that are on a committee to be renamed in the coming months.[2] This street is being considered for the renaming because of its ties to Robert E Lee. Robert E Lee was a Confederate general who partook in many of the unfortunate events that happened in America. The street is being considered to be renamed after Allen Toussaint who was an African American musician.[3]

Robert E Lee Blvd is apart of the planning district 5 in New Orleans. LA. The street is apart of a neighborhood known as City Park. [4] Robert E Lee had a statue that was removed in broad daylight , making it one of the first where citizens celebrated the removal of the statue. Lee was apart of some of the rougher days in America with white supremacy being at a all time high during his time in office as a confederate general.[5] The Robert E Lee Monument was taken down on May 19th, 2017. A lot of people had different opinions about the taking down of the monument. Law maker Karl Oliver made It known that he felt anyone who was celebrating the removal of the monument should be lynched.[6] Contractors were threatened during the removal of the Confederate monuments due to some not aggreging with the removal.[7]

Robert E Lee was a Confederate General through the years of 1861 through 1865. Lee was born on a plantation into a wealthy family. [8]General Lee was born and raised in Stanford Hall , Virginia in 1807 and died in 1870. General Lee's father was known for being a war hero so lee followed in his father's footsteps. Once Robert lee retired he was known as Granny lee because he chose not to cause any more violence that was unneeded. [9]General Lee was amongst many who owned slaves throughout his lifetime. General Lee believed that slavery should be left in God's hands for many years he believed that to be true and he refused to see that it was an issue in America.[10] General Lee died from a heart disease that he had been dealing with for many years until it, unfortunately, took his life.[11] Later in life Lee let it be known that he did not agree with slavery in a letter he wrote to his son in 1861. Lee believed that slavery was evil and stated that in the letter, although he did believe that whites were far more superior than blacks.[12]

Allen Toussaint[edit]

The New Orleans City council renaming commission has chosen Allen Toussaint Blvd as a new name for the street Robert E Lee Blvd who was an American confederate general. was Allen Toussaint was an American famous singer and songwriter. Toussaint helped bring the modern sound of New Orleans music to other musicians and ultimately was credited to helping bring the New Orleans soul music to where it's at today.[13] Allen Toussaint has many ties to the New Orleans area. Toussaint resided in New Orleans for many years and he worked alongside many other natives from the New Orleans area. Together they created some of the tops New Orleans modern-day hits.[14] Toussaint once lived on Robert E Blvd himself. [15]The New Orleans City council renaming commission was created in June of 2020 when the world was taken by a storm from protest due to unarmed blacks being killed by the hands of the police.[16]

Greek Festival[edit]

Robert E Lee Blvd is known for holding the Greek Fest each year which is held during the spring. Due to Covid-19 the event was canceled in 2021.[17]The Greek Fest is one of many festivals held in the New Orleans area which usually brings out 23,000 citizens each year.[18] The Greek Fest is held to during memorial day weekend each year and it brings together the New Orleans area to celebrate the Greek culture. With Greek music and food it is sure to be memorable event.[19] New Orleans has a special connection to Greeks being that many Greeks immigrated to the New Orleans area in 1880's. Greek fest offers a variety of events that the community can take part in including shopping for Hellenic clothes and jewelry. [20] Greek festival is an affordable event held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. The entertainment is extraordinary with events like the 5k run and dance lesson throughout the three days of the festival. [21]
