I am an advocate of open source and active in the free culture movement in several ways:

  • Currently co-founder of Decent Espresso [1] - an open hardware, open source espresso machine.
  • founded and run Magnatune, which is arguably the originator of the term "Open Music" and of the "CCPlus" concept promoted by Creative Commons, whereby open culture works are funded by a no-approval-needed licensing scheme that enables commercial use. All of Magnatune's music is available under a creative commons by-nc-sa v1.0 license. Magnatune also funds development of the open source programs Amarok (software) and Rhythmbox.
  • founded and run BookMooch, a free Book swapping web site, with a strong pro-library, pro-charity angle, as well as making all of its data available under a Creative Commons license. BookMooch's goal is to create a free, global, non-commercial and communal library of all books ever printed, and so shares some of the same project goals as Wikipedia.
  • founded and eventually sold Lyris, an email discussion and newsletter software company, which both used open source, and funded several open source projects, such as the Tcl core language and web server.

I was born in London, raised in Paris until I was 10, and then lived in Chicago, California, New Haven, Washington DC. I now live in Hong Kong.
