(Horse Racing) Whip, is used for safety reasons and to motivate the horses to run faster. In today's professional horse racing jockeys are allowed to use the whip, but may be penalized for unnecessary or excess use[1]. There has been controversy on whether the jockeys should be allowed to use the whip for at least half a century. The debate is still a relevant topic as the California Horse Racing Board has recently proposed a rule on the whipping regulation. It proposed that the whip will not be allowed to be used at any state-sanctioned Race track unless used to control the horse or rider for safety reasons[2].In August 2009 a rule was introduced that the old fashioned stick and leather whip was no longer allowed[3]. Thus, the new Padded whip was introduced that includes cushioning and was much softer than the classic leather whip. However, this rule has been rescinded several times since first being implemented. Therefore, the racing crop or whip is still a matter of debate, especially today with the growing influence of animal abuse activists[4]. Today in 2 year old races jockeys are only allowed to use the whip to control the horse or for safety reasons and this may soon apply to all California state-sanctioned races.

(Horse Racing) Saddle, The saddle used for horse back racing is unlike the western saddle because it does not contain a horn. Saddles used for exercising and training are typically heavier than the saddles used in the real races. Exercise and training saddles weigh somewhere around 6 Kilo Grams[5].However, in races the average tack of a jockey which includes the saddle and irons is typically around 4 pounds[6]. Saddles are used to situate a jockey with more security upon being mounted. Next, saddles often require the use of stirrups and a girth that wraps around the stomach of the horse. Also, almost all saddles used in horse racing are composed of leather. The first modern western racing saddle is believed to date back to 365 AD[7] by the Sarmations of the Iranian confederations of classical antiquity. Although, it is believed the idea of the saddle-like equipment derived from 700 BC by the Assyrian cavalry[8]. Henceforth, Man has been making use of the saddle since before Christ and the Saddle is still in heavy use today and many centuries to come.
