Passara (Sinhalese: පස්සර, Tamil: பசறை) is a major city situated in the lower central hills of Sri Lanka. It is the next major city while passing Badulla town which is in Uva Province and the Badulla District.

01. HIstory

Several years back, this area was governed under the Village Council system but, in 1987 this was made a domain of Pradeshiya Sabha which is now governed under the local government institutions. This is an area surrounded by the mountains located amidst the Loggal Oya (stream), Menik river, Miriya Oya, Varadola and Kirindi Oya that are located amidst the soil water source that runs down from the Namunukula mountain range. An ancient temple which is said as erected during the era of King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe is located in the Pallegama area in Passara. It is called Passara Raja Maha Viharaya.

In order to assist the planters who have planted tea and rubber Agrarian Services Centers were established in 1983 in Pattipola, Madolsima, and Passara. There was a betel plantation in Passara from which betel leaves were said to be supplied from for the Sinhalese King. Passara Vidane had the stewardship of the said plantation. He was a reputable persons who has lead an honourable life but, had joined the rebellion and strengthened the voices of the people in Passara area who worked against the government.
