Rumia

Hi, may I ask why you have reverted my recent edit of Erika Steinbach article ? Do you believe that Rumia belonged to Germany before Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939 ? --Lysy ^(talk) 00:58, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

I think you're getting over it. Would you be using "Warschau" name for similar reason ? Rumia was a suburb of Gdynia in 1939. It certainly did not "share common history" with Danzig, and using German name might suggest to an unaware reader that Erika Steinbach was born in a German town, which is very misleading in this context. --Lysy ^(talk) 01:10, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

As for Wikipedia:Naming conventions/Geographic names you are right, but proposal is wider than just article naming as it defines the usage within the body of the article as well. Any idea on how to neatly summarize it in a short sentence ? --Lysy ^(talk) 01:23, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for accepting my last edit of Erika Steinbach and for undestanding why I did this. I know it is difficult, but I tried to compromise on having the German name mentioned and at the same time no implication that it belonged to Germany at that time. Scotch bonnet

In may 2004 you added a picture to this article. Are you sure it shows scotch bonnet peppers? If i had to guess, i'd say it shows habaneros (compare Image:Habanero.jpg. The fruits are not as round as scotch bonnets used to be. I know, the edit is quite old, but perhaps you can check it. Would be nice. --Zinnmann 19:43, 24 January 2006 (UTC) Scotch bonnet peppers suffer from inbreeding with habaneros. Not all peppers come out the same shape, and the best ones come on the market. Farmers keep seeds of the poor shapes for the next crop. This worsens the prob. The Jamaican agriculitural board is fixing this with new seeds.

This has just been started by Calgacus and needs a lot of expansion/fleshing out/help/comment. I would like to invite you to participate if you are interested. There is a lot of work to do on Germany-related articles, and some collaboration and cooperation would be a good thing. Linking to images on foreign wikipedias?

Hi Chris,

You created the Wikipedia:Finding images tutorial so can you help me with an issue. On the WP english page for Jiří Paroubek I want to use the image from his Czech WP page. Is there a syntax for linking to the Czech WP image, or do I need to upload the image to the english WP first? - Rye1967 22:52, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi. There is no way to link directly to an image on the Czech Wikipedia. However, this problem is addressed through the Wikimedia Commons. Images uploaded there can be linked to like a normal image from any Wikipedia/Wikimedia project. This gives an easy access of a lot of images for all projects. The only thing to pay attention to is: Only free images are allowed, the copyright must include permission for derivatives and commercial work. Fair use images are not allowed. Since the Image:Jirí Paroubek z MZV.jpg is free, i added it to the commons and linked it on the article. While doing that i also found a pronounciation sound file on the commons, which I also linked. Br Alexis Bugnolo

Hi, I have been in discussion with Br Alexis Bugnolo and he feels the edit war he was in was reverting vandalism. He has only been on Wikipedia for about a week and I believe that this edit war was in good faith. I told him that the edits that the other party made were not vandalism, even if misguided, as the Vandalism policy goes. I got pulled into this because I was on RC Patrol, and I reverted a blanking once. Then I realized that I may have made a mistake, so I reverted myself. My recommendation is that you unblock, at least Br Alexis Bugnolo because he is a newbie. Thanks for your attention.--Adam ^(talk) 19:54, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Please consult the talk, picture description and related pages before editing the picture description, there is a controversy right now over whether the picture is an accurate portrayal of pushups. Hi Chris. I don't believe that this image is in the public domain. It's either taken from the original manuscript, in which case it is "Copyright © 2000-2004 Medieval Tymes, All Rights Reserved.", or it's a scan from a printing that's copyright Pierpont Morgan Library, of no earlier than 1927, and so not out of copyright. Either way, it's not public domain, although it may be arguable as fair use. Rogerborg 13:54, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

I am not a copyright expert. As I understand, the original bible is from ~1250, hence out of copyright. A facsimile was published in 1927. The (legal) question is, if the facsimile is identical with the original images (hence no copyright), or if artistic value has been added. A reprint of an out-of-copyright document also has no copyright. As for now, I see the image still as public domain. Dear Chris 73, I've been looking at the image http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mark_48_Torpedo_testing.jpg - showing the torpedo hitting a ship, and I'm a bit confused about the last part of the montage: Why does the last of the nine images seem to be a different ship? Hi. I tried pretty much the same thing about a year ago, and many voters got tired and just blanko voted to keep everything. I got a lot of heat (plus a little support) for doing this, was labelled as a deletionist, and overall it was not a pretty experience. To avoid you from the same fate, I would at a minimum not list languages you think should be kept. In fact, I think listing a few languages every now and then individually is much less likely to swamp the voters and pass regularly through the process. Of course you may refer to your list, but my advice is to prioritize VfD's, and start with the least worthy, slowly working your way through the list. Possible source of free images of birds and mammals

I am not sure if these could be used on Wikipedia, but the Pennsylvania Game Commision (PGC) has 35 nice pictures of birds and 24 of mammals that appear to be free use (as long as the photographer and PGC Photo are credited). Since your user page says you are on the lookout for free pictures, I thought this might be of interest. I was unsure if they were truly free images, but figured you would know. help with vandalism

Image:LuigiWaitesPlaysVibraphone.jpg (which you seem to have originated and edited) was vandalized by an un-registered user (i.e., just an IP address) who has vandalized several other pages. I don't know what the protocol is for dealing with such vandalism and thought you could help. Thanks Special-T 17:05, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Rollback

Hello. I'd like to ask you not to use the administrative rollback button in content disputes. It looks like you've been making liberal use of it recently in reverting Molobo and Space Cadet, but that's not really right. In the interest of preventing the furthering of edit wars, all content reverts should really give an explicit description and reason. As Wikipedia:Revert#Administrator_feature_(rollbacks) says: "Rollbacks should be used with caution and restraint. Reverting a good-faith edit may send the message that 'I think your edit was no better than vandalism and doesn't deserve even the courtesy of an explanatory edit summary.' VandalProof 1.2 Now Available

After a lenghty, but much-needed Wikibreak, I'm happy to announce that version 1.2 of VandalProof is now available for download! Beyond fixing some of the most obnoxious bugs, like the persistent crash on start-up that many have experienced, version 1.2 also offers a wide variety of new features, including a stub-sorter, a global user whitelist and blacklist, navigational controls, and greater customization. You can find a full list of the new features here. While I believe this release to be a significant improvement over the last, it's nonetheless nowhere near the end of the line for VandalProof. Thanks to Rob Church, I now have an account on test.wikipedia.org with SysOp rights and have already been hard at work incorporating administrative tools into VandalProof, which I plan to make available in the near future. An example of one such SysOp tool that I'm working on incorporating is my simple history merge tool, which simplifies the process of performing history merges from one article into another. Anyway, if you haven't already, I'd encourage you to download and install version 1.2 and take it out for a test-drive. About Mr. Toyoda

Tatsura Toyoda, chairman and CEO of the Toyota Corporation and an alumnus of NYU's Stern School of Business, received a Doctor of Commercial Science degree, honoris causa.

Mr. Toyoda is the Chairman of the Toyota Foundation and a Senior Advisor to Toyota Motor Corporation. He is also a Director of Toyota Industries Company. Mr. Toyoda is a son of the founder of Toyota Motor Corporation and joined the family business in 1953. He headed a joint venture between General Motors and Toyota in California from 1984-1986. In 1992, Mr. Tatsuro succeeded his older brother, Shoichiro, to become company president.

I noticed that you wanted to see new RfAs appear in the Signpost. I'm working on a proposal for a personalized opt-in alerts system for receiving alerts. sea of japan map

thanks for restoring the more informative map. however, there's a problem with a minor detail. a japanese user is changing ulleung basin (tsushima) into tsushima (ulleung). as was discussed before, & i again pointed out recently in talk, it is clear that ulleung is the more common english name in various google searches, most notably in google scholar. thanks for any help. Water animation image and Original Research

I have made digital modifications to images and do not object to the practice personally, but the WP:NOR page may need to be updated, in particular the clause "Even noted as having been manipulated, they should not be used to illustrate articles in the main namespace". Request to move category pages

Hello! I need your help. I need you to move, rename or merge these category pages and their respective talk pages to the correct format following MOSNUM. This is to provide greater consistency and prevent redundancy to these pages. This is also to prevent users from creating the same category pages as well. Some of these categories contain two similiar pages because of this. These are the categories in question:

• Category:Wikipedians with 3000-4000 edits to Category:Wikipedians with 3,000-4,000 edits.
• Category:Wikipedians with 4000-5000 edits to Category:Wikipedians with 4,000-5,000 edits.
• Category:Wikipedians with 5000-6000 edits to Category:Wikipedians with 5,000-6,000 edits.
• Category:Wikipedians with 6000-7000 edits to Category:Wikipedians with 6,000-7,000 edits.
• Category:Wikipedians with 7000-8000 edits to Category:Wikipedians with 7,000-8,000 edits.
• Category:Wikipedians with 8000-9000 edits to Category:Wikipedians with 8,000-9,000 edits.
• Category:Wikipedians with 9000-10,000 edits to Category:Wikipedians with 9,000-10,000 edits.
• Category:Wikipedians with 1000-2000 edits to Category:Wikipedians with 1,000-2,000 edits.
• Category:Wikipedians with 2000-3000 edits to Category:Wikipedians with 2,000-3,000 edits.
• Category:Wikipedians with 1000-2500 edits to Category:Wikipedians with 1,000-2,500 edits.

Notice that the changes in the title pages only require the addition of a comma for 4 and more digit numbers. You should also delete the redundant category pages as well. tsushima basin

i just don't understand your partisanship. here's how i understand what happened:

november 2005, i noticed that ulleung was a more common name than tsushima. you did your own google search, & relabeled it ulleung (tsushima), with consensus of myself & endroit, the only participants. that's how it's been ever since. earlier this month, a now-banned sockpuppet changed the name to tsushima & created a new tsushima basin article. i reverted to the existing consensus, but he created a misspelled "tushima basin".

at this point, i would've expected a neutral admin to correct this to ulleung basin, the existing consensus. but you moved it to tsushima. ok, maybe you didn't remember the details & were just going to neutrally administer a poll. but no, you became a party to the dispute & voted for tsushima. ok, you have every right to participate & vote. but that means your actions in having moved the article, setting & changing the rules of the poll, characterizing the result, & announcing the result at various talk pages are as one of the voters, not a neutral third party administrator.

in characterizing the result, i pointed out the neutral guideline of WP:RM is 60% for a consensus. there was no consensus for a new name to overturn the previous 100% consensus. you have no authority to declare less than 60% good enough for a "consensus". you have no right to post at various talk pages that your preference has been decided, when no such consensus was reached.

it's unfortunate that such a small matter has gotten so out of hand and personal. if you had just closed the vote saying 57.9%, no consensus, period, that would've been the end of that. it was only when you pronounced the result in your favor that i thought hey, not only was there no clear consensus for tsushima, the previous consensus was actually ulleung. & maybe i was naive, but i thought that as an admin, you would be more careful, neutral & knowledgeable of the procedures, even if you had been an advocate during the poll.

at this point, i still think that technically, with no new consensus for change, the previous consensus of ulleung should be restored. but we can all move on to more important things if you just stop pretending there was a consensus & a conclusion in your favor, & agree to call it inconclusive. i do assume you are acting in good faith. that's why i didn't question your motives when you moved the article to tsushima or voted in a poll you appeared to be administering neutrally or counted an ineligible voter for tsushima. but for me, your pronouncements of victory at various talk pages broke the proverbial camel's back. i do believe you don't have an inherent bias on this topic, but just became too involved as an advocate to also make administrative judgment calls. as i said, i will live with tsushima if you just accurately call the result "no consensus" and roll back the map at sea of japan. thanks.
