Stovpyn[translit 1] (Polish: Stołpin; Russian: Столпин; Ukrainian: Стовпин) is a village in the Busk district (raion) of Lviv province (oblast) in northwestern Ukraine.

Stovpyn, Busk Raion, Lviv Oblast, Ukraine, bordering Poland

Demographics[edit]

A January 2007 count indicated that the settlement of 183 people had seventy-four farms on 1.52 square kilometres (0.59 square miles).

The population of the community in 1880 was about 965 inhabitants (573 Russians, 359 Poles, and thirty-one Germans). In addition to seventy-nine residents from twelve homes in the area of the rural manor house and farm, 886 others lived in 140 homes nearby.[3]

Religion[edit]

Tallies from 1890 recorded membership numbers for the following denominations: 497 Greek Catholic, 419 Roman Catholic, forty Israelites, and nine other faiths. Dedicated to the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the village had a church. Parishes records were kept in Toporiv for Roman Catholics and in Bołożynów for Greek Catholics.[3]

Geography[edit]

Forming southwest of the village church, Stołpin stream runs northeast and once joined in Kasztelański pond circa 1890 with the Kasztelan (also known as Baczki) stream, which still flows northeast of the village. Downstream, the water also once passed through a Toporiv[translit 1] pond, eventually, as today, becoming one arm of the Styr River.[3]

Government[edit]

Local representation within the Busk district is through the Chanyzka Local Council with two other communities and twenty-three other councils in the district.

The village post office in Toporiv serves the settlement.[2]

History[edit]

In 1890, described as 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of Brody village and 5 km (3.1 mi) southeast of Toporiv's fertile land, the community included groups of houses immediately west, north, and northwest of Stołpin named Lasowe, Czykal, and Kasztelan, respectively, as well as southern parts called Julianka farm, Bortniki, and to its east Kuliki. The larger of two recorded property areas consisted of 892 arable acres (1.394 arable square miles; 3.61 arable square kilometers), 306 acres (0.478 sq mi; 1.24 km2) acres of meadows and gardens, 56 pasture acres (0.088 pasture sq mi; 0.23 pasture km2), and 571 acres (0.892 sq mi; 2.31 km2) of forest; the smaller property was, respectively, 523 acres (0.817 sq mi; 2.12 km2), 421 acres (0.658 sq mi; 1.70 km2), 43 acres (0.067 sq mi; 0.17 km2), and 4 acres (0.0063 sq mi; 0.016 km2).[3]
