The 2006 Fort Erie-Buffalo Snowstorm occured on October 12 and 13, 2006. It dumped up to 40 cm (15 inches) of snow in Fort Erie, Ontario, and up to 25 inches (60 cm) of snow in Buffalo. Records were broken for snowfall. It also affected large portions of Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Michigan, and New York State with snow. Trees were knocked over and powerlines were down. There was extensive damage, especially in the area east of Lake Erie, and at least 6 people have died. A state of emergency was issued in many parts of the affected areas and many schools were closed. Southwest winds from Lake Erie caused severe snowstorms and thundersnow, and cars slid off highways due to the slippery snow and many were injured. The Southwest winds also brought snow from Lake Huron, Lake St. Clair, Lake Michigan, and Lake Winnipegosis. Heavy snow also resulted from Lake Winnipegosis in Southern Manitoba, from Lake Superior in areas near Thunder Bay and Wawa, from Lake Huron and Georgian Bay in areas near Midland, Tobermory, Parry Sound, and Owen Sound, from Lake Michigan in areas near Chicago, Detroit, Windsor, and Sarnia, from Lake Ontario in areas near Bellville, Coburg, Cornwall, and Montreal, and of course from Lake Erie an areas near Buffalo, Fort Erie, Stoney Creek, St. Catherines, Niagara Falls, Grand Island, Porter, and Rochester. In some areas where the snow was deep it quickly melted over the next several days and resulted in severe flooding. Many basements were flooded, resulting in even more damage from the storm. The system eventually slowly lifted north and weakened near Northern Quebec and Baffin Island in Nunavut.
