Whois[edit]

Is there a technical reason why the whois link was changed from samspade to the toolserver? I find that samspade gives a bit more information in most cases. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 23:17, 27 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I was talking with a developer on IRC about samspade's tool and they told me that it was outdated by years. What does samspade have that whois on the toolserver doesn't? It also seems to me that the toolserver is faster, as an advantage. -- Mentifisto 09:46, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Change URL of RBLs[edit]

Hi, the RBLs link does not go directly to the RBL page of robtex. Instead it should go to http://www.robtex.com/ip/213.146.172.146.html#blacklists for example. --Bsadowski1 06:09, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's actually intended as an rDNS link, which is far more useful than DNSBLs. Additionally the blacklist entries do get a mention on the IP page. Rather than changing the link which is useful, it's the description that's not entirely correct. Over a WP:OP we've just called this link 'Robtex', but most probably won't know what that means. What is the need for this additional link? This footer is displayed when you are either already in the anon user's contributions page or on the user's talk page. I'm not clear on what you're saying. Which "talk page on Wikipedia" are you referring to? Article talk, user talk? Since the only talk page this template shows up on is the user talk, I assume that's what you mean. But there has always been a link to the user's contributions from the talk page. Sorry if I'm missing the justification here. On every user talk page, anon or not, there is a link to that user's contributions in the toolbox on the left of the screen. I'm afraid we're talking past each other and not understanding the other's points. Can you point me to an example talk page where the contributions link would not exist except for in the new anon footer? The user contributions link exists on every user talk page regardless of who has or has not edited the page. If you have happened to switch to the Vector skin, the toolbox is minimized by default. Jumping in a bit late, I made the requested edit since it appeared to be non-controversial, but now it appears there is some objections. From my reading of the thread, it seems everyone agrees that the "toolbox" on the left side of the screen has a link to a user's contributions. The toolbox is (by default) minimized, so the link is not entirely obvious, but it is there. So, it seems as though the question is whether or having a redundant (unminimized) link is necessary. Is this correct? If you would like me to reverse the edit (or have someone else reverse the edit), just make an {{editrequest}} or do it yourself if you are able. I am entirely indifferent. Thanks! If you're using Vector, the word "toolbox" should have an arrow next to it. If it points to the right, it is minimized. If it points down, it is maximized. Are you able to click the arrow? Are you using Vector? -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 21:14, 25 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Remove "global blocks" link[edit]

"Rangeblock finder" now shows both range blocks and global block, see e.g. Special:BlockList/62.212.85.10 so this link can be renamed into something like "Current blocks" while "Global blocks" link can be removed altogether. — AlexSm 15:18, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

IPv6 detection[edit]

Fun fact, this can be done without {{strfind short}} or friends. Replace this template with: 

{{#iferror: {{#expr:{{{1}}}}}

| {{anontools/ipv4|{{{1}}}}}
}}

This will work because a valid IPv4 address is just a few numbers separated with dots, and #expr: will accept it as a floating-point value. Anyway, I have done that for you here (links are generated from the editprotected template), and I have run across a problem. Something seems to be inserting the text "%E2%80%8E" before the username field in the URL, which means the links don't work. DNSstuff requiring registration for IPv6 traceroute[edit]

Template:Anontools/ipv6 currently links to http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools#traceroute/type=ipv4&&value={{{1}}}&& [sic: ipv4 instead of ipv6], but it appears that DNSstuff now requires one to create an account on their site to use this tool for IPV6 addresses (example). Whois[edit]

Can we please replace Overlord's whois tool (now removed because toolserver has gone dead) with a commercial lookup site? I believe that was always the case before Overlord's tool so I don't see that's an issue. http://whois.domaintools.com/ seems to work ok and it's free for basic lookups, is there any objection to adding it to the template? The first google result is https://who.is/ but this failed to find data for some of the IPs I tested it with, 121.54.54.249 for instance. SpinningSpark 14:30, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Since no one else seems to be taking any interest, I have added an IPv4 and IPv6 tool myself. I have no particular attachment for either of those, they were picked more or less at random. hlist[edit]

Please convert /ipv4 and /ipv6 to hlist. Converting to hlist results to more cleaner code on the template and makes easier for other wiki to use enwiki templates as other wikis use different kind of bullet. Fix several broken links[edit]

Taking into account how often these links are broken and how long it often takes for broken links to be remarked and fixed, I dare challenging the sense of their existence and frequency of actual use. In the meantime, please try to fix these broken ones:

  • Traceroute – requires registration/membership – could possibly be changed to http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/tracert.ch/#traceroute|type=ipv4&&value={{{1}}} (if it works for you)
  • Asia/Pacific – Not Found – should probably be changed to http://wq.apnic.net/apnic-bin/whois.pl?searchtext={{{1}}}
  • Latina America/Caribbean – links to empty form – should probably be changed to https://rdap.lacnic.net/rdap-web/ip?key={{{1}}}

HTTPS URLs for Anontools/ipv4 links[edit]

The purpose of this edit is to provide increased privacy and security for users, and, in some cases, to reduce the number of HTTP redirects. The edit involves having the Anontools/ipv4 template use HTTPS URLs for some of the links that currently use HTTP URLs. In Anontools/ipv4, please change the following URLs:

  •  Done http://www.robtex.com/whois/{{{1}}}.html should be changed to https://www.robtex.com/?ip={{{1}}}&whois=1
  •  Done http://whois.arin.net/ should be changed to https://whois.arin.net/

I made some additional edits to both of the subtemplates:

  • The traceroute link wasn't working as it was, so I updated the link to what the site actually uses.
    • However, dnsstuff.com doesn't appear to work with IPv6 at all, so I commented out the link while I look for an acceptable replacement.
  • The rDNS link was just the robtex whois page, so I removed it. The geolocate link gives the rDNS for IPv4, but I'll look for an acceptable replacement here as well.
  • The Europe and Asia/Pacific RIR links were identical, so I combined them.

HTTP links (WhatIsMyIPAddress.com, AfriNIC Whois) that support HTTPS[edit]

The purpose of this edit is to provide increased privacy and security for users by having the Anontools/ipv4 and Anontools/ipv6 templates use HTTPS for certain HTTP links that redirect to HTTPS. (In addition, in Anontools/ipv6, it is possible to reduce the number of redirects by using a more up-to-date URL for the RIPE NCC link.)

AFRINIC broken again[edit]

Protected edit request on 9 January 2020[edit]

The "Africa" link is no longer working, apparently the website had some restructuring recently. It seems they're now making the search with some sort of POST request and showing the result in a popup, so I am not sure whether it's even feasible to create this kind of link to their site. Subtemplates?[edit]

Is there any particular advantage to using subtemplates for the IPv4 and IPv6 links, instead of having them directly on the base template? As-is, the subtemplates make it harder to see the actual code that produces the links (even if only marginally), splits the edit history for this template up among three separate pages, and increases the weight of this template when used (which I ordinarily wouldn't care about for such a simple template, but it was enough of a concern for Template talk:Anontools#IPv6 detection [‍related template edit] years ago). 「ディノ奴千？！」☎ Dinoguy1000 16:27, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please move Template:Anontools/ipv4 to Template:Anontools and delete/redirect Template:Anontools/ipv6. They are now exactly the same template and there is no longer any need for a separate template for ipv6 and ipv4. Tholme (talk) 18:44, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

 Not done (not done for now at least) - these have extensive histories and have had to be customized multiple times in the past; lets let these bake in for a while more - and also determine what if anything we want to do with the histories; I'd be more supportive of redirecting the old ones vs deleting in the event we need to go back. — xaosflux Talk 10:28, 10 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

geoip broken for ipv6 ranges[edit]

eg the geoip on Special:Contributions/2601:194:300:130:250D:335F:8C60:4259/64 will not work. It seems it's just a basic redirect. A slightly smarter replacement for cases where it's possibly a CIDR range would fix it. ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 00:13, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
