my bad when I thought I cut and had only copied, sorry:
ALT1 ... that Sarah Aristidou recorded in 2021 Labyrinth V, a wordless piece that Jörg Widmann composed for her soprano voice, with "ululations, sobs, jazz inflections and wild laughter", as Gramophone noted?
What do you think of writing a short article on that composition? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:19, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
@Grimes2: ALT1 is very long (198 characters) and is also quite complicated. Is there a way to simplify the hook? I think the hook fact has promise but it's very long as it is, which lessens the fact's punch. Personally I'd suggest simply focusing on the "ulutations" quota and omitting mentioning Widmann or soprano, since those add too much complexity. We can drop the composer if Grimes2 writes the article about the piece (I asked), or someone else. Mr. Widmann is one of the leading contemporary composers who's works get performed, and is too little known. The title of the piece itself is attractive, imho. - What would you say instead of "soprano" to express that this isn't an entertainer, with a speaking voice? ... needed to make the contrast bigger. Perhaps we can - instead of all of this - find a reviewer who accepts that the limit is 2000? .. who could be you? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:15, 8 October 2022 (UTC)
WP:DYKHOOK says this: While 200 is a hard limit, hooks near or at this limit may still be rejected at the discretion of reviewers and administrators. In theory a hook just under 200 characters may or may not be accepted depending on the reviewer, particularly if they feel that the hook could be made shorter. For what it's worth, the article itself meets DYK requirements, the hook fact is cited inline and verified in the source, a QPQ has been provided, and I didn't detect close paraphrasing. It's just that the hook has too many details when it could work out better with a straighter focus. As for your comment about Widmann "too little known", the hook is about Aristidou and not Widmann, so that point is not really relevant here. If there's a desire to promote Widmann, he can always have a separate DYK nomination highlighting him instead. Here, the focus has to be on the subject (i.e. Aristidou). I don't go for promoting Widmann out of the blue, but the fact that this particular composer wrote for her says a lot about her. Sorry that I was not clear enough, obviously. The idea to drop Widmann just seemed so strange to me. Thank you for the ALT, Grimes2, but I don't believe we also need Gramophone, and I am not sure that "piece for her" will be understood as "a composition undertaken specifically with her voice and vocal abilities in mind. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:27, 8 October 2022 (UTC)
I'm still unconvinced that the mention of Widmann is necessary, but if it's absolutely necessary and his non-mention is non-negotiable, I would be okay with ALT1a. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 14:29, 8 October 2022 (UTC)
I'm giving this nomination the benefit of the doubt and approving ALT1a. I don't think it's a spectacular hook but it's the best option right now and it solves my original concern about ALT0 being near 200 characters. Upon further reflection, while I don't think the mention of Widmann is necessary, I don't think mentioning him would hurt either, and the hook would sound very strange without mentioning at least the name of the piece.
