@Smurrayinchester: The vast majority are either quotes or are names that can't be reworded. But the following phrases could be changed: leave to remain was denied; was picked up by news media; got a job as a receptionist at the Merchant Navy Hotel in Lancaster Gate; and Brian Paddick, the Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokesperson. @Epicgenius: Thanks. Have rewritten was picked up by news media and got a job as a receptionist at the Merchant Navy Hotel in Lancaster Gate. Have kept leave to remain was denied since this is a legal term of art and Brian Paddick, the Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokesperson, because that's just his title (see Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokesman). Hi, I came by to promote this, but in reading the article I don't see a source for this statement: However, this status is voided if the holder spends more than two years outside the country. Do you have a source for that? Footnote 3, which is the cite for much of the information about the denial of a visa to Clennell, only says that the law requires a couple to live in the UK for long, uninterrupted stretches. @Yoninah: Reference 3 does cite it ("Between 2003 and 2004 she put in four separate applications for leave to remain and they were all rejected because she had been out of the country for more than two years, invalidating her earlier leave to remain.") However, Reference 2 is more explicit ("she had no idea that, despite her marriage, there were restrictions on the amount of time she could spend out of the UK.
